I use Windows XP home with IE7.
I read microsoft article saying that I need to uninstall IE7 prior to
install new service pack3. It stated if I install service pack3 with IE7 in
my PC I won't able to uninstall IE7 in the future. The ariticle recomend I
uninstall IE7 first, then install service pack 3 then re-install IE7 after
that. My question is will I encounter with a problem other than not be able
to uninstall IE7? also, What kind(degree) of inconvenience will I have if I
can not uninstall IE7 later? Should I follow this advice? Thank you in
advance for the advice.

Follow the advice only if you want to have the ability to uninstall IE7 and
revert to IE 6 at a later date.

The *only* reason for uninstalling IE 7 prior to installing SP 3 is that
it gives you the opportunity to uninstall IE 7 at a later date.

The *only* reasons for uninstalling IE 7 are:
1- You are experiencing a problem with IE 7 /that is caused by a faulty
installation/; or
2- An application you are using now is not compatible with IE 7 (and
there is no update available to make it compatible) and that application
is necessary for your livelihood (e.g., an internally developed
application from your employer.)

If neither of the above two reasons apply to you there is no need to
uninstall IE 7 prior to installing SP 3. Moreover, if you have been
regularly updating your computer at Windows Update you will find SP 3 a
virtual non-event, since SP 3 is mostly a compilation of updates
released since SP 2. Just follow the instructions on Microsoft's website
and it will be as easy as breathing.

That said, SOP among the wise is to wait a few weeks before installing a
major update to your operating system, just in case any unforeseen
problems with the update arise.

I just finished installing SP3 from Windows Update (took almost an hour). I
had IE 7 before the install and it still shows IE7 and working fine.

Thank you all for usuful advice !!

To Tom,

As you wrote, I'll keep in mind to follow the instruction if I decide to
have an option to uninstall IE7.
Thank you for your advice !

To Leonard,

Thank you for your detailed explanation.
Now I understand the reason why I will encounter the issue if I don't
uninstall IE7 first.
But like you mentioned, I think I would wait a while to do this update.
I am a little surprised to find that Microsoft would release the SP3 with
this type of incompleteness if I may say so, to the public.
Thank you for your advice !

It's good to know that IE7 is working just fine for you.
Since I am so beginer, I am a little nervous about this SP3 update.
I think I will wait a bit longer. but Thank you for your information !

There is no 'incompleteness' in SP 3.

When creating an update that will be installed on millions of computers
worldwide, which have different software and hardware configurations,
it's impossible to predict with certainty what may happen.

Moreover, no matter how skilled the programmers are, it's no simple task
to create millions of lines of code without flaws. Sometimes those flaws
don't turn up until years later. But if there are flaws, they will
probably show up in the first few weeks after the software has received
worldwide exposure.

To Leonard,

You are right.
I totally agree with you about "predicting everything that may happen
is impossible". and SP3 update is no exeption here.
I am so beginer in PC tech world and my way of thinking is way too simple.
Thank you for educating me about this.

Was this what you read?...

IEBlog: IE and Windows XP Service Pack 3:
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2008/05/05/ie-and-xpsp3.aspx

This is what MS has done for quite some time now. The same is seen in Win2K
with IE6 installed: To be able to uninstall IE6, one has to uninstall any
Service Packs that were installed after IE6 was installed.

Hi Meg
I'm also leary of new things and handicapped as well, although
my wife says there is no way I could be normal, haha.
Anyway, I use XP, IE7, Zone Alarm 7.0.473.000, and after
installing SP3, I ran a virus scan on system, as well as using
different programs already installed on system, windows update
just to be sure. Killed about 2 hours this rainy morning, but happy
to say everything working good and smooth.
Just my opinion, but it went as easy as could be.
Good luck
Ted

To PA Bear,

I read this article in Japanese web site last night.
It was written by MS manager "Jane Maliouta"
As you wrote, now I understand that it has always been this way with other
IE products(IE6) as well as this one.
Thank you for informing me about this.

To Ted,

Thank you for your information !
I see you have no problem using your PC after the installation as well.
It's nice to know how it's going with other people's experience with SP3
update.
It will make me feel somwhat at ease to do it myself later on.
I use Norton Internet security 2007 and I hope it won't conflict with it.

To TaurArian,

I really don't know what other things I did wrong, but
If what it said in "How to ask a question"
" Saying [ Thank you in advance] is not nice."
I did not mean to be rude or anything like that.
I always like to thank whoever reading my question ahead of time. that's all.
