Windows XP (Home) SP3, IE7, 1.5GB RAM, Plenty of disk space.

Below is an excerpt from the body of a spam message I received. Could the
scrambling be due to a setting on my computer or the senders? Supposedly,
its from "3-In-1 Credit Report". Any ideas are appreciated.

Hi WMB,

What you are seeing is Unicode encoding of a foreign language that your
computer does not support( probably Chinese as there has been an increase in
spam with the Olympics etc) . You can download optional language packs from
the windows update site, but since it is spam I would just trash it. You
will be able to instantly recognize foreign spam if you don't install the
language packs.

Regards.

Look in the headers that you chose to hide. You will see the encoding
language specified there.

Where? E.g. if your E-mail reader is OE you should be asking in an OE newsgroup.

> Could the scrambling be due to a setting on my computer or the senders?

How much of an "excerpt" are you providing? Again, it depends on where you
are seeing this. E.g. if it's in OE use its Message Source command (e.g. Ctrl-F3)
instead and show us the headers in front of wherever this "excerpt" comes from.

Equally important to the headers in a symptom like this is what you see at
the very end of the message source. Typically it can be a symptom of
graphic files (or binary code) being truncated by the transmitting server(s).

FWIW I think the particular set of characters that you are showing in your "excerpt"
rules out certain kinds of encoding such as the one that Rob has guessed for you.
However, that may be made clearer by seeing any headers which are associated
with this data.
