IE6 - Application Error
Hello. From time to time IE (version 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2) would crash on
me with this message:
IEXPLORE.EXE - Application Error
The instruction at "0x1000137b" referenced memort at "0x1000137b". The
memory could not be "read".

Any ideas what might be causing this and how to fix it? TIA! Tag: Saving web pages as .html Tag: 146049
User Authentication: Logon
I am struggling to understand how the following two logon settings
apply to the different zones:
- Automatic Logon Only In Intranet Zone
- Automatic logon with current username and password
If you use the setting "Automatic Logon Only In Intranet Zone" in the
Trusted zone, then isn't that exactly the same as setting it to
"Prompt For Username and Password". Because if you browse to a site
that is Trusted then the browser will recognise that the site is not
an Intranet page and therefore prompt for automatically login.
A site can not be in more than one zone, right?
Also if you use the setting "Automatic Logon Only In Intranet Zone" in
the Intranet zone, then isn't that exactly the same as setting it to
"Automatic Logon With Current Username And Password". If the site is
not the Intranet zone then it is going to checking the settings in the
zone that it is in, right?
It don't quite add up for me.

Some Outlook 07 email links not working.
Vista Ultimate, IE7, Outlook 07.
Most links that I receive in emails will open up in IE7.
However some, and always from the same senders, will not open.
Yet when I forward the duds to another PC that is equipped the same, they

improvement to browsers
from time to time, there is a really nicely design graphic file or a
nice looking photo, but when it is displayed with a smaller size on IE
or Firefox, the browsers, trying to save time, will make a coarse
resize shrinkage of the original image... and it looks pretty bad. is
there a way to tell the browser by HTML / CSS / browser settings, to
take more time to refine it?
especially, when the page is loaded and the 2GHz Core 2 Duo and Quad
core is sitting there doing close to nothing... why not spend 1/1000
second to make it look better? Tag: Saving web pages as .html Tag: 146038

Possible to enlarge text without zooming whole page?
I am switching from firefox back to explorer. The one feature I miss
is the ability to increase font size on a page with ctrl + and
decrease it with ctrl -.
In explorer, those commands increase and decrease the size of the text
but they do it by zooming the whole page. When I get the text big
enough, part of the page is not visible. So this is not really useful.
Can I make the font bigger but not zoom the whole page?
Thanks much!

IE7 History by Security Zone
I came across an oddity (at least I think so) in IE7 which I feel is
annoying. I have searched and can't find any mention of it so I am now
wondering if I have something set wrong.
I was looking through my history one day to find a site I know I visited the
day before ... it wasn't there even though the history went further back in
time. Several days later was looking at history again when I realized the
issue.
History is Displayed for the Zone you are in. If your home page was added
to a "Trusted Site" then when you open IE7 and look at history, you will only
see Trusted Sites listed. You have to browse to a webpage that is in
"Internet" to see those pages. I this the normal setting ? Can it be
changed ?
Tabs bouncing back and forth are annoying enough at times, but having to
open seperate IE windows to see History is a bit much. Tag: Saving web pages as .html Tag: 146018
Script errors
I am using IE4.0 in a virtual Windows 95 because my host machine (Vista) can
barely access the internet because the "Dependancy service/group" died.
On the host, I can't surf the web but can go onto remote desktop. On the
virtual, I abandoned IE4.0 because of "script errors". I now use Netscape
and Opera to surf the web. The only browsing on IE I use is "Active
Desktop", which i have because of the upgrade from IE3.0 to IE4.0. I also
got outlook express, the "log off" start menu moved into the main menu,
Channel surfing (doesn't work), and that's about it. I also upgraded DUN to
1.3, which helped me quite a bit with Dial-up. Any ideas on how to fix the
"script errors"? Tag: Saving web pages as .html Tag: 146015

This started on the 20th this month, it never happened before that date. At
first while surfing the net it seamed to be Adobe Flash player that caused
this, but now im not so sure, since I have followed the solution on abobe's
homepage and un/reinstalled Flash player with newest version.
My thoughts is that this is one of many Vista problems out-there. Some kind
of error caused by an update.
I'm using Vista Home 32bit Danish, on a Toshiba Satellite L40-139 laptop
with 2GB of memory.
For me to se this is clearly a Vista error, but what is causing it to just
happen out of the blue?
Anyone have a solution?

No Access to IE or AOL
Out of nowhere, there is no longer the ability to access IE or AOL. Mozilla,
however, works fine. We have a Dell computer, one year old, which is running
on a Cable connection, OS Windows XP Media Center, SP2, no router, just
directly connected to the cable. When you click on IE, it gives you the
message that the page cannot be displayed. When trying to sign onto AOL, it
just says, "Goodbye."
We tried to reset IE by going to Internet Tools/Advanced/Reset. No luck.
Tried uninstalled our anti-virus, and even taking off the Windows firewall.
We have reset the modem as per the instructions and it allowed us access to
AOL ONCE, but that was it. Next time, it wouldn't let us on again. We have
restored the computer to a previous time, no luck. I even installed IE7
again and tried the beta IE8, but still no luck.
Does anyone have any ideas why this should be happening? Again, Mozilla
does work, but IE and AOL won't. And they both did at one time not too long
ago.
Thanks for any ideas anyone may have. Tag: Saving web pages as .html Tag: 146005

It all started when I had problems with setting up my network. I heard that

process, I think Norton gave me a parting gift. (A couple viruses and some

Windows Vista/Windows Server 2008: GUI Improvements Required
Hi,
Evaluating Vista/Server 2008 for migration from W2k, W2k3, XP I noticed a
couple of drawbacks when using those OSs.
I've compiled the problems and put them all into one issue here instead of
creating separate issues for all of them.
-- 1 -- : Keyboard handling: It's very straining to use Vista/Server 2008 by
keyboard. It should by far be better supported, like in the previous Windows
versions. Current drawbacks are:
-- 1.1 -- : Common Dialog File Open/Save boxes are missing keyboard
shortcuts, e.g. for creating new folders (previously <ALT>+<F>-<W>-<F>).
-- 1.2 -- : Using Windows Explorer with the keyboard becomes horror:
-- 1.2.1 -- : Opening Windows Explorer (=WE) with <FLAG>+<E> gives focus to
the ListView instead of the TreeView control. So a reverse Tab <SHIFT>+<TAB>
is required to navigate the tree. (It's very uncommon that any action is
required at the "Computer" node, so TreeView navigation is usually *always*
the first thing to be done in Windows Explorer.)
-- 1.2.2 -- : Navigating the WE TreeView doesn't update the ListView. It's
required to hit the [RETURN] key to get the ListView updated. This makes
browsing quite awkward to do.
-- 1.2.3 -- : Tab sequence in WE is very strange! Usually, switching focus
between TreeView and ListView is just a one-tab sequence (you just have to
press the <TAB> key once). But after hitting [RETURN] on the TreeView, the
ListView becomes 4 <TAB> hits away!
-- 1.3 -- : SQL Server 2005 Management Studio doesn't provide a quick "Open
Database Connection" shortcut (previously <CTRL> + <O>, now only
<F8>-<ALT>+<V> [on German version])
-- 1.4 -- : Internet Explorer 7 doesn't provide a shortcut for setting focus
to the address bar (formerly <ALT>+<D>). So it's very hard to correct typos
after hitting [RETURN]. (Awkward, but yet best workaround: <CTRL>+<E> -
<SHIFT>+<TAB> - <SHIFT>+<TAB>)
-- 1.5 -- : The new Start menu is very unhandy.
Just mentioning it to keep the classic view available in future Windows
versions: I've traditionally arranged my (classic) start menu tree in a way
to quickly reach any program by simply pressing the <FLAG> key plus the first
letter of a Start menu entry to finally reach a program entry (e.g.
<FLAG>-<P>-<O>-<W> which is "Programs - Office - Word 2003" ...or...
<FLAG>+<P>+<D>+<8>+<S> which is "Programs - Development Tools - 8_Visual
Studio 2005 - S_Visual Studio"). (This is more easy to do in German than in
English because of default entries starting with the same letter in English
[e.g. "Accessories/Administrative Tools"]). So I'll stick to the classic
Start menu version.
-- 2 -- : Copy File dialog doesn't provide useful information. Even after
updating Vista to SP1, the Copy File dialog still doesn't display which file
currently is copied. So when copying large files the user can't tell which
file is currently copied and, thus, isn't free for use.
-- 3 -- : Color Schema: Hover color is (almost) same as selection color. So
it's hard to tell if an entry has been selected of if the mouse pointer is
just hovering above a ListView entry in WE.
-- 4 -- : Back button in WE doesn't provide a history list. So it's
impossible to go back in history and skip a recently visited folder that
might have become unavailable.
-- 5 -- : WE and Common Dialogs are missing "Navigate to parent node"
functionality.
Thanks for taking the time and eventually forwarding my concerns/suggestions
to the Vista/Server 2008 group.

Since upgrading to IE7, I no longer have Direct Animation installed on my pc.
Could anyone tell me how I correct this problem? Thank you.

When I save web pages in IE7, the opening choice is always to save the page
as .mht. Is it possible to change it so that the opening choice is to save
the page as .html ?
