I am running vista Business and am unable to print from any web page using
IE7. The problem does not exist in Firefox or with any other application -
Office 2007, etc.

I am told that turning off 'protected mode' would solve the problem.

Is there any fix that is a little less dangerous?

Many thanks for any help

I'm having the same problem. I just upgarded my AVG anti-virus from 7.5 to
8. I'm wondering if that could be the issue. Would you happen to be using
AVG?

It shouldn't. be necessary, but it shouldn't be dangerous if you turn it
bark on after printing. Is this a network printer?

The printer I'm having trouble with is the "Send to OneNote 2007" printer. I
can print fine to a network printer in Protected Mode.

So you are saying that it is quite normal using Vista with IE7 when one
wishes to print to (1) turn off protected mode, (2) Print and then (3) turn
protected mode back on ?

That was how they designed Vista Business ? All the time you save with the
clever bits is lost the moment you want to print.

I don't know about One-Note, but it's certainly not normal to have to turn
off Protected Mode. I was hoping that would be a useable work around until
someone figures out what's causing it.

Hello Don

Many thanks for your input, but I have to report that it makes no difference
at all - it still won't print. It goes through the motions - icon appears
at base of IE7 then - nothing!

Hi,
So, can you print with Protected Mode disabled?

Your Temp\Low folder has *not* gone missing, right?

Can you print from IE7 in Safe Mode with Networking?
Start Vista in Safe Mode

Don - many thanks for your further help.

To take your points in order

I seem to have TWO LOW folders - one inside the other!
Inside the main LOW folder I see the Google Toolbar folder and a sizeable HP
application. AIO_CDB_Full_non_network.cnu
The second LOW folder is empty.

YES, I can print from IE7 by turning off the Protected Mode. I can print
normally, without touching the Protected mode from Windows Mail, any Office
2007 application, Adobe Acrobat and Reader, and from Firefox.

I just started in Safe Mode with Networking and noted that IE7 Protected
mode was OFF in this state. I could not print however, as there were no
printers available and clicking on 'Find Printer' resulted in a Windows
Error telling me that the operation could not be completed.

My printer is connected via wireless to an XP machine.

Thanks again.

Hi,
Sorry, I'm out of ideas except:
1. I don't think the problem lies with the Temp\Low folder(s)
2. You might try reconfiguring the network. I would be no help with this
;-)
3. Are there updated drivers available for the printer?
4. You could try removing the last few updates from Microsoft (one at a
time) to see if a particular update has caused the problem.
If an update is the cause, You can start a free Windows Update support
incident request:

Thanks anyway but surely it cannot be a printer or network problem as it
prints from Firefox, Office 2007 and Adobe?

When trying to print from IE7 the printer icon shows in the task bar but it
shows 0 documents pending and nothing prints. It appears the file is not
being spooled to the printer. I can print in all Office programs but not in
IE7. By turning off the Protected Mode in IE7 I am able to print but that is
not a suitable solution.

If you search the web for IE7 print problems you will find that there are
many and quite a few recently. The common thread I see is people questioning
the source of the problem and trying to determine the fault seem to point to
a similar set of circumstances. One of the requirements to install AVG 8
Free on a Vista system is first installing Microsoftâ??s KB929547 hotfix for
windows filtering platform. I have recently updated AVG 7.5 to 8.0 on 2
separate machines and experienced the same IE7 printing problem with both.
Two of my friends also did the same with the same results. I have 2 more
machines with similar requirements and I am going to test IE7 after the
KB929547 install and before installing AVG 8 to see if the printing problem
is caused by the MS KB929547 update or the AVG 8 Free install.

You will notice that AVG 8 has a Link Scanner and invades IE7 by scanning
all of your links in a Google search to determine if they are harmful. The
little wheel turns after each link and provides a green star with a checkmark
if the link is thought to be OK. How cute! Turning off the Link Scanner in
AVG did not solve the printing problem. I was a fan of AVG 7.5 because it was
straight forward and did not interfere with other processes as the big guys
do. So if you turn off the protected mode in IE7 so you can print and then
eliminate the irritating bonk that happens when you open each page will AVG
give you adequate protection?

Do you by any chance have AVG 8 Free on your computer.

is caused by the MS KB929547 update or the AVG 8 Free install.
By right clicking on your IE7 startup icon and selecting {Properties,
Shortcut} and then the advanced tab then check on the Run as Administrator
box you will be able to print from IE. If you are running as a user this box
will not allow you to check it. If that is the case use windows explorer to
go to c:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe. Right click on the
iexplore file and select Send to desktop as shortcut. You will then be able
to check the box on this icon to allow you to run as administrator. You will
need to put your admin password in each time you open IE7 but at least you
can print until the guilty party comes up with a solution.
With Protected Mode On I cannot reply in this forum, so that's one more hook
on the AVG 8 decision. The big guys Norton, McFee also mess with your
computer. AVG slows down your web experience because of the damn Link
Scanner. I ran for 3 years without any Virus protection and never had a
problem. I suspect I may go back to no virus program unless Avg Grisoft
fixes it. I wonder if the paid version of AVG has the same problem with IE7

It's too bad this forum is not indexed on the same subject.

Yes, I did have AVG 8 Free on my PC. I also called Microsoft Tech Support
and when the 'Prefetch' was emptied, the problem went away temporarily! I
then upgraded to AVG 8 - 3 computer license for home use and reported the
fault to them. I am awaiting their response and shall advise.
