Can anyone tell me what causes multiple instances of IE7 to load? It seems
to happen when I load a link into a new tab. Is there a fix?

Windows version? What anti-virus application or security suite is
installed? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What
third-party firewall (if any)?

Check for an incompatible browser add-on.
See: http://www.enhanceie.com/ie/troubleshoot.asp

Shucks, I'm sorry. I should have known better!!

I use Vista Home Edition. Brand new computer (notebook if that helps).
There's Norton on here and no other 3rd party firewalls or antispyware stuff
installed.

I don't have any on here. (That I know of... Norton hasn't detected any and
it's a problem that came with a brand new computer.)

Assuming by "multiple instances" you mean more than one iexplore.exe task,
(e.g. not just multiple windows for one task) it depends on how you are launching them.
I get new tasks whenever I launch from the Start menu (in XPsp2) for example.

Clicking a linkI am having perhaps a similar problem.

It seems perhap that it has to do with a multiple home page support
"feature"? I open IE and get one instance with my homepage displayed. If I
type microsoft.com in the address box, I get a new instance (new window). If
I type google.com in the address box of the 2nd instance, I get the desired
behavior, a new tab in that process displaying google.com. If I go back to
the original instance with the home page displayed and type google.com in
the address box, I get a another Google.com tab in the 2nd instance (3 tabs
open there now). Clicking a link on my homepage will open in a new tab in
that instance. Clicking any entry in "Favorites" opens in a new tab in the
other (2nd) instance. So it looks like no new tabs will open in the
instance that is displaying my home page except links from the home page.
Is that a feature or a bug?

Where? How many instances of iexplore.exe do you have in Task Manager Processes tab then?

Is it a window in an existing task or a new task?

> If I type microsoft.com in the address box, I get a new instance (new window).

Tell us what happens before you press Enter.
E.g., do you have AutoComplete for Web addresses enabled?
Is Use inline AutoComplete enabled?
Then you should see things changing as you type
and your microsoft.com may mean something specific or not.
E.g. you might have a Favorite called that which you are selecting that way.
But in fact, the Favorite would be named: microsoft.com.URL and unless
you had specifically requested to be able to see that .URL extension
it would just appear as microsoft.com in your Address bar.
In the same manner it could also be microsoft.com.LNK
and you wouldn't see that extension either. Then in that case
the shortcut could be given different properties and perhaps
thus result in a new window opening. Etc.

So, no special treatment for google.com by AutoComplete...

That could happen easily by pressing Alt-Enter instead of just Enter.

There are some quirky tab options that I haven't analysed,
especially when multiple home pages are in effect.

> Clicking any entry in "Favorites" opens in a new tab in the other (2nd) instance.

Ambiguous. Favorites menu in that IE, Favorites Center in that IE or Favorites somewhere else?

You haven't described the simplest case yet: Ctrl-t in the window that you don't seem
to be open new tabs in.

> Is that a feature or a bug?

Not enough information. You could use ProcMon to help you understand better what you are seeing.

>
> Running Vista Ultimate w/"Norton Protection Center".

FWIW I don't know anything about that but I wouldn't be surprised if you
could get some quirky behaviour as a result of having it installed.

FWIW I have no trouble opening more that one instance of iexplore.exe
by using the (XPsp2) Start menu in any fashion. When I want to be sure
that I am going to get a new task I use the Run.. dialog (e.g. press Win-R)
and enter:

iexplore.exe -new
