1) Thx for your reply, that helped me doing this:
I went again to "Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > File =
Types", this time I clicked the "URL" header to sort after that column, =
and scrolled to the line:
URL (something)
I didn't record the "something" but Windows told me (approx) "you =
changed..." and proposed to restore, which I accepted. Now I have the =
line:
URL Internet Shortcut
Unfortunately this wasn't enough, even after rebooting, to restore the =
proper functioning of Internet Shortcuts.
2) Selecting the above "URL Internet Shortcut" line and selecting =
"Advanced > open > Edit > Application used to perform action" still =
shows:
rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %l
and of course in "Start > Menu > Programs > Accessories > Command =
Prompt", typing "ftype InternetShortcut" also returns:
InternetShortcut=3Drundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %l
3) On my W2KSP4 PC (which is not affected: from there I can browse =
through my LAN down to the affected XP Pro laptop and there to the =
example "
http://www.google.com/" Internet Shortcut, this duly opens a =
new IE6 window loaded with the Google home page), I get the same =
results, in Windows Explorer and in a CMD black window:
- In "Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types", clicking =
the "File Types" header to sort after it, then scrolling, duly shows the =
2 lines:
N/A Internet Shortcut
URL Internet Shortcut
and selecting the 2nd one then "Advanced > open > Edit > Application =
used to perform action" also shows:
rundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %l
- In "Start > Program > Accessories > Command Prompt" I also get what's =
normal:
C:\>ftype InternetShortcut
InternetShortcut=3Drundll32.exe shdocvw.dll,OpenURL %l
C:\>
4) I didn't apply the "InternetShortcut=3Drundll32.exe =
ieframe.dll,OpenURL %l" that you recommend; I am not sure it is quite =
safe, and BTW I have no "ieframe.dll" on my system. Here are some =
reasons:
- =
http://www.google.com/search?q=3DInternetShortcut%3Drundll32.exe+ieframe.=
dll%2COpenURL+%25l shows "ieframe.dll" is mostly advocated by yourself, =
with almost no reply other than "IllNeverHaveYouAgai" reporting it =
caused errors. Other than yourself, the only recommending "ieframe.dll" =
seem to be 2 french MVPs, and Ramesh who in =
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/ie/urlopennew.htm seems to imply that =
"shdocvw.dll" would "Open in New window" while "ieframe.dll" would "Open =
in New Tab".
- OTOH replacing "ieframe" with "shdocvw", =
http://www.google.com/search?q=3DInternetShortcut%3Drundll32.exe+shdocvw.=
dll%2COpenURL+%25l shows no more results, but they include an MSKB =
(
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/175306)
- From =
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=3D843101&SiteID=3D1=
it seems that "ieframe.dll" is a new library created in IE7 to host =
*part of* what IE6 had in "shdocvw.dll"
- It seems that a significant number of malwares are hiding under the =
"ieframe.dll" name.
- In addition, I am running IE6 (after two extensive tries of IE7 in =
2006-2007, for months each, I reverted to IE6).
So my problem remains unsolved so far, but your post did make things =
clearer to me. I thank you - and hope you have the time to help me =
further.

Wrong line. Scroll down to Extension URL with the same File type.
BTW I have never noticed that duplication before
(which is there even after I check Always show extension for that file =
extension.) ; )

That may be where your problem is though. ; )
It's the Editing dialog of the Open Action which is the most =
significant.
You can see a different representation of the same information using a =
cmd window and entering:
<cmd_output OS=3D"XPsp2">
F:\>assoc .URL
.URL=3DInternetShortcut
F:\>ftype InternetShortcut
InternetShortcut=3Drundll32.exe ieframe.dll,OpenURL %l
</cmd_output>

Subject: Internet Shortcuts "does not have a program associated"
In "Windows Explorer > some folder", I go to an Internet Shortcut, say =
"Google", with Properties =3D "
http://www.google.com/". Opening such a =
Shortcut (using Double-Click in Windows Explorer or Simple-Click in =
Start Menu) stopped to work last week; instead of opening an IE window =
on the specified URL, it says:
_____________________________________________
|
http://www.google.com/
|________________________________________________
|
| X This file does not have a program associated with it for =
performing this action.
| Create an association in the Folder Options control panel.
|
| | OK |
|______________________________________________
X =3D white cross on red disk
This change apparently occurred when I uninstalled the package of my =
previous ISP, which was Orange. That package included a customized IE6, =
so I think the uninstall attempted (or faked) to restore default =
settings (Reason for doubt is that the former ISP is the biggest here, =
that recently turned from official state monopoly to a "private" company =
with the same monopoly attitude, but aggravated and stripped from former =
state control).
I went to "Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types", =
clicked the "File Types"header to sort after that column, and scrolled =
to the line:
(NONE) Internet Shortcut
(On another PC I have 2 "Internet Shortcut" lines, but on the affected =
PC I have just the above)
When I select that line, the "Delete" and "Change" buttons are greyed. =
Opening the "Advanced" button offers nothing useful AFAIK. TIA for any =
help!
