Re: Internet Explorer is not responding by Don

Don

Hi,
It may take some time to troubleshoot this, but look for an incompatible
add-on.

See: http://www.enhanceie.com/ie/troubleshoot.asp
for troubleshooting information.
More at:
IEBlog Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer?s (No Add-ons) Mode:
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/07/25/678113.aspx

The troublesome program may not show up as an add-on. Disable other
security, privacy, ad-blocking, appearance tweaking programs to see if one
of them is causing the problem. Any program that interacts with Internet
Explorer could be causing this.

A firewall will probably not be causing this problem, but be sure to turn on
the Windows Firewall from Control Panel> Windows Firewall before disabling a
third-party firewall or security suite during testing.

1.. SP1 was preinstalled on the notebook. I bought it about two =
months ago and it was it shipped with the service pack already =
installed.

2.. Norton Internet Security (also preinstalled by HP). Windows =
Security Center reports the following:
a) Firewall: Norton firewall is turned on. Windows firewall is turned =
off.
b) Automatic updating is turned on and machine is "fully patched" at =
Windows Update.
d) Norton Antivirus (Malware protection) is turned on and all drives =
have been scanned for viruses.
e) Norton Spyware Protection and Windows Defender are turned on.
f) User Account Control is turned on.
Prior to reading your reply I had not noticed that there are 2 spyware =
programs running concurrently. Although I do not believe that should =
cause IE to freeze up, I have turned off Windows Defender and I will see =
if the problem goes away.

Needless to say, intermittent freezes are tedious to troubleshoot and =
performing more than one corrective task at the same time
me may resolve the problem but one will never know which action actually =
worked.

I will try your suggestions. Norton Internet Security is running on my =
desktop PC without a problem but the desktop computer is running Win XP =

never resulted an anything but a waste of more time.

I am at my wits end trying to figure out what to do.

Well, Norton is not the problem.

Completely removed all Symantec software. Still freezing up. Will look =
at the balance of the troubleshooting suggestions.

Honest to God though, Windows shouldn't be that hard! Every version of =
Windows I have ever run (Windows 2, Windows 3.0, 3.1 etc. [enviroments =
on top of DOS], Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT, Windows =
2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista (Business & Home Premium editions) =
have had IE issues. IE2 (that's when I switched from Netscape), 3, 4, =
5, 6, & 7 have all tested every fiber of my patience.

I'm 61 years old and I don't know how much of what's left of my life I =
want to keep screwing around with this stuff. I'm ready for my first =
MAC!!!

I'd very much doubt that Defender's causing any problems here. =
Defender is entirely compatible with most third-party security =

Internet Security an
