I only have Live One Care for security etc. and am using Vista 64 bit O/S. I
can brouse in AOL and everything works well there. M/S IE was working fine On
my original start up with Vista 64 and then I lost it. I downloaded full
latest version of Live One Care (which does not indicate any problems) and
this seemed to cure the problem. However I have lost the use of IE yet again
and L1C tech people say there is nothing wrong with their side of things.
So Where do I go from here?
Diagnosis says there can be Firewall blocking but it states that M S
firewall is properly configured to allow internet activity. Have contacted
AOL my ISP and as I can use their system without problem they say its MS.
Have been going round in circles for weeks now!
Any help would be appreciated.

Crystall Ball© sez:

Error message after you install a Windows Internet Explorer 7 update from
Windows Update or from Microsoft Update: "Webpage cannot be displayed":
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942818

If tweaking your third-party firewall's settings don't help, try the
following:

1. Disable your anti-virus application, any real-time protection provided by
an anti-spyware application (except for Windows Defender; includes Spybot
Tea Timer, SpySweeper Guards, AVG AS guard.exe, etc.), disable any
third-party firewall AND enable the Windows Firewall.

NB: If you're running ZA Free firewall, you may need to uninstall it instead
of disabling it. You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else
online (e.g., browsing; reading email; chatting) except #4 below until your
anti-virus application has been re-enabled!

2. Uninstall "Security Update for Windows Internet Explorer 7 (KB939653)"
[or "Security Update for Windows XP (KB939653)"] via Add/Remove Programs
(make sure Show Updates box is checked at top right) and reboot.

3. Re-do #1 above.

4. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install any Critical Updates
offered. If "Root Certificates" update is listed in the Optional Updates
category, you might install it, too, to take full advantage of IE7's
additional security.

5. Reboot > Make sure everything in #1 above is enabled again and, if
applicable, disable the Windows Firewall and enable your third-party
firewall.

Hi,
Have now attempted to carry out your recommendation, three times but
unfortunately with no success.
Is there any other update that could have caused the Problem?
Would it be best to uninstall all updates back to the first time KB939653
was installed to see if this would give any clue?
Update log show the first instalment was 14/10/07 and of course twice more
today as I have tried to remove and reinstall once with Live One Care active
firewall and once without. Live One Care immediately shows the need for
KB939653 to be installed.
I donâ??t understand how L 1 C can update when I cannot reach M/S I.E.
Of course I am on line Via AOL I.E. or their own version to be able to
return this message.
Any other suggestions would be most helpful.
Regards

Is 939653 currently installed?

Are you able to open all webpages using Internet Explorer (e.g., Windows
Update website) if you uninstall 939653?

Is Internet Explorer (not AOL browser) set as your default browser in Set
Program Access and Defaults?

If you uninstall all AOL software, does the behavior persist?

What free-trial security software, if any (e.g., anything by Norton or
McAfee), came preinstalled on the machine? Did you uninstall it and run the
appropriate removal tool (if available) before installing OneCare?

Sorry to be so long responding
1. Yes I.E. set as default Browser.
2. No, no better with AOL uninstalled.
3. No additional TP security software and yes I did uninstall all previous
software before loading Live One care the first time.
4. Have attempted all the detail in the various KB articles.

Please note in desperation I decided to mount a second drive and re-activate
a new installation of Vista 64 bit. Without loading AOL all ok I was able to
surf the net etc. And the Home page response was very quick.
I then reloaded AOL and other soft ware. I could surf the net in both AOL
and Microsoft I.E.
I was downloading from Adobe (from within AOL and from a link in e-mail from
Adobe) and was requested to open another site and inadvertently opened M/S
I.E. or attempted to and have now found that by doing this M/S I.E. is in
some way corrupted because Iâ??m back where I started !!
I do not know what has happened but no matter what I do I cannot restore the
I.E.
I can type in individual addresses and I get the required site but not the
opening page of I.E. so no surfing possible.
This is no doubt what I did in the first instance to be in the state I now
find myself.
Any ideas?
Regards
