    - IE7 Icons on desktop When using IE7 with XP the desktop icons have all changed to the internet 7 icon on the task bar and I can not change the icons to what I wish or had on desktop with IE^. You are able to change the icons but when you click apply the desktop icons only show as the IE& icon for all desktop icons.What is wrong with IE& settings etc?     - Icons in Yahoo Mail Missing Admitedly, I'm a IE newbie having spent most of my browsing life using Netscape and FF. Therefore, the questions I post may appear too simplistic to even answer but I ask them only after an ernest attempt to find the answer myself.     - Customization & Functionality Admitedly, I'm a IE newbie having spent most of my browsing life using Netscape and FF. Therefore, the questions I post may appear too simplistic to even answer but I ask them only after an ernest attempt to find the answer myself. Having said that: There must be more functionality in IE than shows in the vanilla IE window but I haven't found someplace where I can customize the toolbars? Also, I assume there are themes that will change the window colors and change the style from the boring flat window but I don't know how to do that either. Where is any of this documented?     - How Install Add-ons? Admitedly, I'm a IE newbie having spent most of my browsing life using Netscape and FF. Therefore, the questions I post may appear too simplistic to even answer but I ask them only after an ernest attempt to find the answer myself. Having said that: I want to install an add-on but don't see how to do it. The help pages say to go to Tools>Manage Add-ons>Find More Add-ons which takes me to www.windowsmarketplace.com/category.aspx?bcaid=3500. Navigating through a few more pages I can select the Add-on "Video Download" and click on "Download Now" which brings up a dialog box with 3 choices: Open, Save, Cancel. Selecting Open displays the contents of the file in Notepad; REGEDIT4 and 2 lines of of registry changes. Save saves the file to wherever I want. Assuming I saved the file, what's next? I couldn't find anything called "Install." Help seems to assume that it's common knowledge and implies that "install" is accessable from Manage Add-ons. The file extension is incorrect for a registry file? I tried running it from a command prompt and it couldn't find REGEDIT4.     - IE Slow Opening, Closing, Switching & Loading Tabs Admitedly, I'm a IE newbie having spent most of my browsing life using Netscape and FF. Therefore, the questions I post may appear too simplistic to even answer but I ask them only after an ernest attempt to find the answer myself. Having said that: It seems to me that IE is very slow opening, closing, switching tabs (as compared with what I'm used to in FF, which is quite fast) and loading pages. Sitching tabs seems to take 1-2 seconds. Opening a tab seems to take 2 seconds or more just to open the tab before the page begins to be fetched. Loading a pages seems significantly slower than FF although I don't have any numbers to back it up. Closing tabs is oftentimes very slow. There are times when I'll stop the page loading then closing the tab may be quick. But, too often it takes from several seconds to 15 seconds or more. Task Manager often shows IE as not responding and the revolving circle takes over (I don't know what to call the "circle" except "the-thing-that-replaced-the-hourglass"). Continued clicking on close only results in IE going gray and a dialog box coming up telling me the application is not responding and giving me 3 choices, the only viable one being to wait. My system config is below.     - Save and take back tabbed Websheets ? I would like to know if the following is possible with Internet Explorer 7. Assume that you have some 5-10 Websites open in different tabs. You want to save these as one "view" because next time you want to continue your work on the subject in question, you want to re-open them all at once again.     - security setting not working in IE7 when i moved the slider under security tab to max for internet zone and tried to download the eicar file from their site, I window appeared informing me that my security setting prevents downloading, that was great to hear.     - IE - doesn't open any web page, and I can't download it from micro I have recently been having problem with my IE6. It doesn't open any web page. By the time I open it, it displays window Internet Explorer can't display the web page (or sth like that, I haven't got English IE). I've cleared all cache, history, temp and it doesn't help. So I tried to download a new version of IE7. On Microsoft web page there's a "Download" button but when I press it it only refreshes the web page.     - Suggestion on Favorites centre To IE team I have a suggestion about the favorites centre. In additition to to the current settable properties per favorite, it would be great if an additional 'rating' property could be added. Then I could rate some of my greatest favorites and leave them in the same folder. The high rated favorites would appear in bold or with a special icon at the top of the list. Regards.     - internet explorer will not load I have installed internet explorer 7 and sp3. when I open internet explorer it never loads the progress bar just gets half way to full. I have emptied caches, opened withhout add ons, but it still does not work. The problem seems to have started after my ip adress was changed through my wireless router(belkin). I am able to use my aol browser with no problems. I have windows xp home, compaq presario laptop, intel celeron.     - Can't save files using IE7 When I click on the file and opt to Save As using IE7 and Vista I direct the file to go into my Download folder but then it immediately disappears, whether I click Run or Save, the file appears to be downloading just fine and then it disappears entirely. I have been using FireFox without issue as the solution, but I would like to be able to use IE7 as I've always done. I'll give you a summary of the things I've tried to fix the problem: * Deleting Temporary Internet Files in IE * Deleting Windows Temp folders * Shutting down all non-microsoft spyware/antivirus programs * Checking for viruses/spyware with AVG, Windows Defender, SpyBot S&D 1.5.2 * Installing all latest chipset drivers available * Installing all Windows Updates including Vista SP1 * Running IE7 in "no addons" mode * Resetting IE7 I had a suspicion that this may have occurred after a recent Windows update and I've also tried Restoring to a date before the one I suspected, but this didn't resolve the problem.     - Slow Internet Explorer 7 After installing IE 7 my email use has slowed down considerably. I use it very frequentl and the lost seconds add too much time. When I am in Gmail and click on "Compose Mail" or "Read Mail", etc. it takes between 8 and 10 seconds to open. Prior to IE 7 it was instantaneous. I switched over to my Firefox to see if the same thing happended and it opens immediately. What do you think causes this? I would really prefer to stay with IE but if it cannot be corrected I will have to use Firefox. Is there a way to go back to IE 6 without losing anything?     - IE7 cutting off links, titles, text I've asked several people about this, but none have ever heard of it. The situation: I've bought a new widescreen laptop (a HP with pre-loaded software including IE7). IE7 is showing many or most websites incorrectly: it 'centers' most websites in the IE7 window (so white space appears on either side), instead of left-aligning the content. That's not a problem in itself, but it seems as though the width allocated for the site is too narrow. There are often buttons missing, links missing and text often 'overlaps' other frames or images. It's as if IE7 doesn't have room to display everything, so it doesn't try to, even though the IE7 window has lots of space! I de-installed IE7 and re-downloaded it. I played around with text size and zooming. I did a reset of the IE settings. Nothing's worked. Finally, I downloaded and installed Firefox, and that works without any issues. But I'd rather use IE if I can sort this out. I don't think it's a screen-driver or hardware issue, because surely that would have caused problems for Firefox too. Thanks to anyone who can help!     - "Organize Favorites" 1. I imported my bookmarks from FF into IE. They are now in alphabetical order which is not the way I had them nor is it the way I want them. If I add a favorite to the bottom I'd like it to stay there. If I move a folder I'd like it to stay where I moved it. Possible in IE? 2. In FF I can select multiple bookmarks to move or delete. How can I do same in IE? 3. If I want to browse the favorites folders all the folders, with the entire tree expanded, are displayed with no obvious way to collapse any. I read in other posts that this was a design desicion and will be the same way in IE 8?     - Youtube windows won't open For some strange reason about 60% of the music videos that I try to view on youtube won't open up. I get a message saying the the video is no longer available. I can send the same link to someone else who lives in the same internet provider area and he has no problem opening it. I wrote to youtube about this but its's been over 4 weeks with no reply.     - Since XP SP3, IE Menus Don't pulldown Properly Odd problem; since installing the XP SP3 and follow-ups, when I have multiple IE sessions running, if I background one and return to it, the Favorites, Recent websites, File, Edit, View etc pulldown menus won't stay open. I click on a menu, and it flashes open and closed. Occasionally if I hit the Back button to a previous page on the session, it'll restore fucntionality, but mostly this problem will persist in the session and I have to close.     - Can't see all of page content. Looks like a 'snapshot' I work at a community college and frequently use IE7 to work with our Course Management System, Angel. When I try to do the settings in the dropbox, there is no scroll bar on the right so I can scroll down to other portions of the settings. It almost looks like a snapshot of it. It is really weird. I have to go into Mozilla to work with the dropboxes, but do the other page editing in IE7 (because it all looks funky if I work in Mozilla).     - IE7 adress bar searches There is no google toolbar installed, and google is not the default search provider, nor is listed on my search provider list. When keying in a search from the address bar the searh is provided by Google images search. Cannot figure out how to stop this. Would like to use any other search provider but cannot.     - ie7 and myfidelity daily I recently purchased a laptop with vista. It also has ie7. (apparently ie6 is not compatible with vista). Also at one point I upgraded to ie7 on an xp pc and problem still occurred. The problem is the watchlist section of myfidelity daily is blank. It never loads, never has on any ie7.     - IE7 doesn't load in new windows/tabs Since a recent update which I installed yesterday, I believe, IE7 does not load anything anymore in new Tabs or new Windows. The behavior is as follows, e.g. 1) open www.live.com 2) right click on the "images"-links and click "open in new tab" or "open in new window" The new tab/window will appear, the URL displayed in address bar the new tab/window is correct, but the page does not load. If I explicitly confirm the URL by pressing return in the address bar, the page loads. If a new window is opened via JavaScript the address bar displays not the correct URL, but the last URL I typed in. So to actually post in this newsgroup I had to download a different browser, because the form for new posts opens in a new window. My OS is 32bit Vista Home, I already did reset all setting of the internet explorer in options->advanced, disabled Norton Internet Security and so forth, but all with no success.     - Opening a new RSS tab gripe In favorites, if I mouse wheel click to open one of my favorites in a new tab, the favorites frame stays open, allowing me to pick and choose several sites I want to open in new tabs.     - IE 7 repeatedly opens new windows Hi, On occasion, when I try to close IE, it will repeatedly open new windows to my home page. The only way to stop it without shutting down is to go into the Task Manager, and kill ieuser.exe as well as iexplorer.exe. This has occurred more than once, but I have so far been completely unable to reproduce it. The first thing I thought was that I was infected with a virus that my McAfee Security Center wasn't detecting, but I have already gone to McAfee support, and it checks out fine - it detected and quarantined a test virus without a problem.     - Group Policy wipes out additional home pages in IE7 There was another post on this subject from May that was not brought to a conclusion, so here goes another one: We set the default home page through GP, and if a user sets additional home pages they are wiped out after the next GP refresh (leaving only our default). I've updated inetres.adm to see if there are additional featues for controlling this action and have not been able to find anything.     - IE 7 - File Download Security Warning It seems that any downloads that should normally install and launch in the browser window no longer functions correctly. I no longer get the 'run' option, only the 'save' option. This is a problem because I use a program at work, Interwise, for conference meetings. It is supposed to open to my meeting room but instead, I have to save the .svt file to my desktop and then launch it from there. On another machine running XP SP2 with IE 7, I don't have this issue. I have compared all my IE 7 internet options security settings and have found them to be exact. I don't have the pop-up blocker enabled on either machine.     - Save htm file - rename later, corrupts display I did a Google search but couldn't get "right keywords" to find appropriate answer. If not a quick answer, maybe just a URL/pointer. I run into this occasionally and curious why it happens / how to correct: Background - setup: While online I save a webpage to my Pc as htm, so it saves 2 files "XYZ.htm" file and a " XYZ_files ". Later on, (like today) I notice the god-awfully long filename and want to change it. Here's the filename: " HP Pavilion dv2000-dv6000-dv9000 and Compaq Presario v3000-v6000 Series Notebook PCs - HP Limited Warranty Service Enhancement.htm" and if I open it first - it looks fine - page is displayed just as it was when I was at HP website - all margins/page layout etc. Here's my question: If I try to rename I get a windows " You might corrupt file.... we recommend that you open the file and do a " Save As". If I do that - the layout gets messed up - fonts change etc. SO I figure , OK - there's SOMETHING it that file when I saved it originally that sees a difference so let me just go ahead and rename both files. So I rename HP Pavilion dv2000-dv6000-dv9000 and Compaq Presario v3000-v6000 Series Notebook PCs - HP Limited Warranty Service Enhancement.htm to HP Pavilion dv6000 Series Warranty Enhancement.htm and rename HP Pavilion dv2000-dv6000-dv9000 and Compaq Presario v3000-v6000 Series Notebook PCs - HP Limited Warranty Service Enhancement_files to HP Pavilion dv6000 Series Warranty Enhancement_files. I open THAT and - messed up - just as the other is. I rename back to original and - looks good again. 1. Why does it get messed up ? , and 2. other than revisiting a webpage and saving again with new name, how to avoid distorting the layout/fonts etc. 3. Or cannot avoid it because "something" is imbedded into file ? Thanks. PS: reason for wanting to rename has to do with "browsing that folder". I find that later on, when I try to download a file and do a " Save As" and point to that folder, in the folder browser popup window where I'm choosing to save the file, the spacing between file columns is " as wide as the widest filename", so if I have a LOT of files in there, AND if the spacing between each column is a wide as the 'FILENAME ABOVE', then I might have to scroll a long time to the right to find something that I want to overwrite or to see if a name is in use.     - Where it IE 7 downloading to? Hello I asekd this question a few weeks ago but didn't get to the bottom of it ______________________________________ I just downloaded an MP3 podcast with IE 7 and now can't find it on my computer Normally, I use a Stardownloader and have full control but it isn't installed on this computer Where on Earth would IE7 put it? _____________________________________ Poeple asked me where I saved it to but that is the problem. I click on an icon and in the bottom left hand corner of IE 7, I can see that the mp3 is downloading. There is also a lot of incoming activity detected by my firewall.     - ActiveX not getting detecting in IE7 in Vista Hi, I'm facing this peculiar problem of ActiveX Control not getting detected in IE7 in Vista...We have our own ActiveX control(written by us) and should be detected and loaded while launching an application in IE. At this point, The browser is not loading the activex correctly and so not launching the required application. Where as this is not the case in XP systems.. It is failing only on Vista and that too on some particular Vista machines. However on upgrading it to SP1 this problem is getting fixed. I guess there will be some setting on the Vista or on IE which is avoiding this and not detecting the ActiveX since this is not the case with all the machines. SYMPTOMS: no favorites accessible from favorites menu, clicking add favorites has no effect, import favorites command wants a bookmark.htm file thatâ??s in the folder I moved, but when I browse and find it and click NEXT I come to a prompt to â??select the folder where the imported favorites will be placedâ?? and thereâ??s no folder to select.     - Advertisment pop ups I am having a problem with a advertisement pop up and I have run all my spyware and other tools to try and get it to stop but it does not seem to see it as a problem. Maybe someone can help me so I do not have to re install my Windows Vista Home Basic. I even have blocked Windows Internet Explorer from being accessible and am just using my Mozilla Firefox.     - I.E 7 crashes Starting two days ago, I.E suddenly closes with that very meaningful message - "Windows has encountered a problem with IE and must close....." It will then close some of the IE windows i have open but not all of them - usually the ones i am working on and any related. Sometimes this happens as i open IE. Well the size of ie7 is around 14mb and the worst part is that installing
the ie7 is taking hell a lot of time than installing any other browser,and we
have to restart the computer for uing it.Cant u make the installation process
any easier?

Required reading IMHO before installing IE7:

Sandi's Installation Tips <= Steps #1-8, #10 & #11; take note of #12, then
STOP!

And I strongly recommend using

installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.

Tip: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it.

Make *certain* that you check in at Windows Update immediately after
