I have a group of folders in my Favorites pull down menu. Sometimes when I
select one link out of one of the folders, I am unable to select another link
out of that same folder w/o double clicking and getting the entire list to
open in another window. I see what appears to be a small box above the arrow
of the folder I am trying to open and this will not go away until I select
another folder in my Favorites. Why does IE7 do this?

1. Does this behavior persist if you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode? To start
IE7 in No Add-ons mode:

Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without Add-ons; or

Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No
add-ons).

Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer?s (No Add-ons) Mode:
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/07/25/678113.aspx

2. Does the problem persist if you Reset IE7 Settings (RIES)?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 <= Read before using!

3. If you uninstall (a) IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6), (b)
all toolbars and (c) all third-party Windows Themes (including Window
Blinds) and do NOT reinstall IE7, does this behavior persist? If it does,
do NOT reinstall IE7.

Uninstalling IE7

How to uninstall Internet Explorer 7:

IE7 (Un)Installation and Anti-Malware Applications:

4. Required reading IMHO before reinstalling IE7:

Sandi's Installation Tips <= FOLLOW THESE TIPS TO THE LETTER!
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install

I strongly recommend using
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx as the
installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.

Tip: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it.

Make *certain* that you check in at Windows Update immediately after
reinstalling IE7 to install any critical updates offered. If Optional
Updates category offers Root Certificates update, I recommend installing it
to take full advantage of IE7's additional security.

I don't understand your symptom description. It seems ambiguous at best.

Which list of Favorites? The Favorites menu (e.g. press Alt-a)?
Or the Favorites Center (e.g. press Alt-c)?

Is that all you do--select, so that, for example, in the case of a Favorites Center
link in a subfolder, you have the subfolder name highlighted in blue and the
link highlighted in grey, the Open in new tab button showing on that line
and a tooltip showing for the whole thing?

What happens when you move the mouse pointer in the above scenario?
Are you saying all those elements stay, regardless of where you move it?

Another window? So you aren't using tabs?

Both the Favorites menu and the Favorites Center provide would might be described
as "arrows" on subfolder items in their respective lists... However, in the case of
a Favorites Center subfolder item if you move your pointer over its arrow you do
get a box drawn around it and the first time you do that you get a tooltip telling you
what it's for...

A relevant detail which you have not disclosed is whether you are using the option:
Close unused folders in History and Favorites*
* Takes effect after you restart Internet Explorer
(in Options, Advanced tab, Browsing section)

Robert,

I am selecting the "Favorites" tab at the top (e.g. press Alt-a). I have
organized several groups of links together in different "Folders". I have
noticed that when I open a link that is in one of these folders and browse
around for awhile, I cannot view another link in that same folder. All of the
other folders will open up so you can see all the other links if you hold the
curser over that folder. This appears to only happen for this one folder. I
have another folder called "Search Engines". In this folder I have links to
Google, Yahoo, Ask.com, AltaVista, etc. I can connect to any one of these and
go back to the same folder and hold my curser over the folder and it opens up
so I can see all of the links inside.

I do not use the Favorites Center option at all.
