Running Excel 2002, IE 6 on Windows XP, accessing Sharepoint WSS 2.0.

I have a few different workstations that were all created from the same
image that have the same versions of Excel, IE and Windows. I have an Excel
document stored in Sharepoint (WSS 2.0). When I click on the document to
view it, sometimes the document opens within IE and sometimes it opens in
Excel outside of IE. On one workstation the first time you open the document
it opens in Excel outside of the browser and everytime after that (until the
browser is closed and reopened) the document is opened within IE.

We would like the documents to always open within IE, which happens on a
couple workstations but not on others. I haven't been able to figure out
what is configured differently between the computers or what would be
different between opening a document the first time and second time. I have
looked at Windows Explorer -> Tools -> Folder Options -> File Types -> XLS ->
Advanced and made sure the "Browse in Same Window" is checked.

Anyone have any ideas why Excel isn't always opening within IE? Everything
I have found in searching the internet points to the "Browse in Same Window"
checkbox and I've checked and unchecked it several times but it doesn't seem
to make any difference.

Thanks in advance
Terry

Do a little backward engineering based on this article:

How to Configure Internet Explorer to Open Office Documents in the
Appropriate Office Program Instead of in Internet Explorer

Thanks but I've looked at that article. As I said the "Browse in Same
Window" option is checked so it should always use the browser if I'm clicking
on a link from within IE but it is inconsistent, sometimes it does, sometimes
it doesn't.

Simply checking or unchecking the checkbox doesn't seem to be changing
behavior. Changing or removing the registry value doesn't seem to be
changing behavior either. I was wondering if there is some other security
settings on the machine that could be overriding these settings.
