On my laptop, when I enter a URL in the site address bar and hit
enter, it does not take me to the entered site, but does a search
instead. I know there is a way to change this behavior to have the
bar send you to the URL site instead and I thought I had a note on how
to, but can seem to find it.

Can someone advise me on how to make this change in behavior?

Thanks
Charlie

Tools - Internet options - Search from address bar - then click "Just
display results"

Looks like you aren't entering a protocol prefix for your URL.
Then if your DNS is too slow letting IE see that what you are entering
is really a web site's name it gets treated as a search argument
for your search from the Address bar search provider.

Is this a site you have visited before? If so, and if you have
AutoComplete for web addresses enabled notice that when
you start typing the site name (especially if you start typing
the domain name instead of the www. server name prefix)
you can see a full URL (e.g. in particular with a protocol prefix)
in that feature's AutoSuggest list. If you accept an entry
from that list you should not see your Address bar search
invoked.

Thanks Joaneee, got it!

While you are here - another question, if you don't mind.

When starting IE7 on the laptop, it takes quite awhile to load, with
the message "Detecting proxy settings" in the status bar at the bottom
of the window. Any way to speed up that detection?

Thanks

Do you connect via a proxy?

You got me on that! I'm not sure what a proxy is. I connect through
a home network using a Linksys 4-Port Router with the desktop and
laptop over a DSL line. Is a proxy required for that?

Ok, PA,

I reviewed the proxy server on the laptop and it was not checked, but
"Automatic detect settings" was checked. I reviewed the desktop
settings for LAN Settings and nothing was checked, so I did the same
on the laptop - and it is working fine now!

Thanks

YW. "Automatically detect settings" was going to be next.
