 - Non-Authenticated Users unable to change their password Hello All, I am currently seeing an issue that I have not been able to chase down. If a user tries to log in & their password is due to expire within 14 days they get a prompt to change their password. if they click yes, they go to a screen where they have to put in theor existing pword & their new one. if they do this, they get a message You do not have permission to change your password. If they simply log onto their pc with their existing pword & then go to the Windows security screen ( Ctrl/Alt Del) and select Change password they are able to do so. Appears that only the non authenticated attempt to change is failing. I have verified in AD if I check the security for a user the Everyone user is listed with Change Password rights. Only on the user & computer level, NOT for the OU for either computers or users. Running a Win2k domain SP2. Using 5 DCs. Nothing has changed on the Domain in quite a while. Any thoughts? I've been out of the Windows side of things for quite a while ( Linux Admin) so forgive me if my explaination is off.  - Identifying service accounts Hi, We are looking to find out what services are running underdomain accounts across over 100 servers. I know the active migration toolkit - service account migration will do this, however it requires a "to domain" to be in place for the wizard to run, even though it is just going to report on service accounts.  - nonauthoritative restore problem this is how i am doing nonauthoritative restore, tell me if i miss something The backup (system state) was like 3 months old. my hard drive crashes, i replace my hard drive (same drive size and letter) and installed operating system, then i restart my computer >>F8 >> directory services mode>>>ntbackup and restore system state to its otiginal location. after doing i restart the server and in normal mode, i can see my DNS and DHCP, IP configuration.as it was before but i cant see the three consoles in Administration Tools nor did any security policy, (DNS and DHCP are showing lists of user and computers but they are not giving any lease to clients now.) i recreate mmc to add a snap in and it shows Active directory users and computers.but they are not working, users cant login, and they are l,ike not providing services. i creatd a new user to test but it cant login, as there is no user on that name. i am getting no error message ......  - Group Policy Not Working for just one user... We have a group policy configured on our network that includes a folder redirection policy. Basically it redirects everyone's My Documents folder to a central folder under their name on our server. This makes sure everything gets backed up. We've had this folder redirection in place for the past 7 years and it's worked fine. We discovered today however that one of our users My Documents folders has never been redirected. We only found this out after we formatted this particular user's computer and they ended up with no documents. Their my documents folder on the server was basically empty. Whilst we can't retrieve the data and this is no major problem I'm concerned as to why the folder redirection for this particular user has failed. The user account has been in use for I'd say the last 5 years and many users have been created since and everyone elses account redirects fine. Locally the user is a member of the Power Users group, as is everyone else. All the other group policy settings are working fine - standard desktop icons, standard start menu, standard wallpaper etc. Can anyone suggest some reasons for the issue with the my documents redirection? If I am correct, this is a huge problem. But I need to see additional config information to ascertain this. Please post an unedited ipconfig /all from the server and from the client please. Also let us know what the actual AD DNS domain name is. Just some info - A single label DNS name causies resolution and DNS registration problems with Windows 2008, Windows 2003, Windows 2000, XP and Vista . They simpley cannot register into a single label DNS zones. The EventID 5781 is indicative of a single label domain name. Also, please also read the following that explains the issue and a bandaid to get around it and force all of your clients, including the DC to properly use it. I restat the server 2000. And everything goes well. But for about 4 or 6 hours, the server gave the same info when I open ad users&computers.  - Measuring Token Size I have been tasked with getting the exact token size for a list of user accounts. I have downloaded and tested the tokensz utility. It will provide a list of groups for a user credential but it will not provide a token size count for any credential but the one I am running it with.  - adprep /forestprep There is a schema conflict with Exchange 2000 Hi All, In my environment only one Windows 2000 DC is there. In this DC running Exchange 2000 Server also. Now I am installing New Windows 2003 ADC on Hardware server. Now i am facing one problem: In exiting windows 2000 DC i have running f:\i386\adprep.exe /forestprep this command: It's showing error: "Adprep was unable to extend the schema. [Status/Consequence] There is a schema conflict with Exchange 2000. The schema is not updated. [User Action] The schema conflict must be resolved before running adprep. Resolve the schema conflict, allow the change to replicate between all replication partners, and then run Adprep. For information on resolving the conflict, see Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q325379." I have read with this article Q325379 and also follow this article procedure.  - Multiple Access Denied Hello! A Windows 2000 Server as a PDC with Active Directory installed. Logged in to the PDC as a domain admin I cannot access Domain Security Policy. I get Access Denied. Also, if I log on to a Windows XP Pro workstation as the same domain admin, some things I cannot do (like change the system time) even though DOMAIN\Domain Admins is in the local Administrators group.  - Current time vs. Local Time, PLease help! Ok. I set my AD Server up as a Time Server for our Network. If I type in net time in command prompt I get back the Current Time at \\SERVER is Correct Time. If I go to a Workstation on my Domain and type in Net Time I get Current Time at \\SERVER is ( a hour back then correct time) and then I get a message Local Time at \\SERVER is the Correct Time. Of course the clock gets set to the Current time which is wrong because it is a hour behind and all the workstations are a hour behind. I want to restrict individual users to only one (1) login on one PC at any given time (no simultaneous logins by any given user).  - CSVDE tool usage I have a challenge to move 300 users from being CONTACT to being a AD USER. I have exported all settings so that I can just modify the ObjectClass and OU settings and import all of the other settings into AD Windows 2000. However I have an error stating that "Constraint Violation" "A required attribute is missing". I have run export with -f filename.csv -m -r -s servername. Due to the email address not changing and it appears to have a user account in the contact file, this appears to be the issue. Is there something I am missing about this tool? I have not used this tool for many years so there could be a minor change required in order to make this change. My concern is that I can not edit the csv file, so it would be only a backup and recovery to the same everything.  - Problem with DC browsing another DC... We have a small network with 4 x Win2000 Servers using Active Directory. All servers have been promoted to be Domain Controllers. I just built the last box to replace one of the older servers, and I have a problem with it. It wont browse into one of the other servers on the network - and - the same server cannot browse into the new server! Both of these servers can browse to all of the other servers on the LAN.  - Roaming Profiles and Redirected Folders Inconsistent I'm Running Windows 2000 Small Business Server as a PDC/DC/AD, DNS, and Terminal Server with a Windows 2003 Server running DHCP, DNS, and File Server. Clients are Windows XP Pro. On the W2K SBS, I set the default policy to include folder redirection of the users' "My Documents", etc. folders. In AD, I set the users profiles to be redirected (different path, same server, W2K3) as well. The redirection is not working consistently. I've had cases where a user logs in from one computer and their folders are redirected. The same user goes to another computer and logs in - the folders are NOT redirected. It is "hit and miss" as to whether the folders/profiles are redirected or not. What should I check to diagnose and fix these problems? What needs to be changed?  - List AD attributes? How would i export all avilable attributes (be they populated or not) for a user object? I can view them by scrolling through an accounts properties in ADSI Edit, but i'd like to have them in a single list i can view and make notations on.  - moving accounts retaining SID Is there a way to preserve the SID to user and computer accounts? What i wish to attempt is to dismantle a domain then to recreate it as a child domain in another forest. However, there is mission critical software that is sensitive to the SID of an account in relation to an extensive SQL database. I dont want to orphan several hundred account refences within that database for the loss of the SID. The domain is currently Server 2000 and will be joined under 2003. Because its 2000 the option to rename/reasign it itsnt there. Id like to export the accounts with the SID and import them once the domain is restored while retaining the original SID's.  - HELP - Cannot add DC to existing domain... I'm trying to add a secondary DC to my existing domain. The existing DC is running W2k Server with SP4 and all patches. The new server is running W2003 Server R2 Standard edition with SP2 and all patches. I have successfully run adprep /forestprep and adprep /domainprep on my W2K server but I still am getting an error message that the forest is NOT prepared!!! Error message: "The Active Directory Installation Wizard cannot continue because the forest is not prepared for installing Windows Server 2003.  - Win 2000 Folder Move Restictions and Delete Questions Hello, I have a customer who is becoming impossible to work with. She's requesting things I've never had to deal with before. The first is: She wants everyone (5 users) to read, access and update files and folders that they would normally would given their access rights on the shares etc.. She wants to be the only one to have the ability to move folders from one directory to another for fear of a user moving things and not knowing where it went. Is this possible??? The other thing is, she wants to know if a file or folder deleted from a network drive (from a mapped drive on the users PC) could go into a recycle bin or be retrieved in any way. Sorry if these are dim witted, but I've really never been asked to do these things. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  - Domain name on install I'm finally moving my NT 4.0 SBS to Windows 2003. We have a small network with one internal domain "NTDOMAIN" (not ntdomain.anything). I have DNS running on a Windows 2000 server. I'm a little confused as to what i'm going to end up with when I switch us to the Windows 2003 Server. Because the SBS server hardware will not handle an upgrade, i'm going to install NT 4.0 server on a new box and upgrade it to Windows 2003 and retire the SBS server. I'm walking through the steps of the install to ensure i have all my ducks in a row prior to the install. When i get to installing AD I understand it will ask me to create a new domain (Domain in a new forest).. 1. will it use "NTDOMAIN" at this point? 2. When it asks me to type full DNS name of the domain. do I use ntdomain.loc (we don't have a registered name and have no need for one) 3. Our organization has a vendor's server which needs to query group policy information from AD in order for it to work with documents. If a user is accessing a document at a remote location (say America) the query takes 20 seconds which has to complete before they can view the document. Many test have been performed to rule out the network (so it seems :-) My question is based on AD querying remote locations for group information what would be the best approach at isolating this issue or is there a known issue within AD query? The servers are windows 2003. Could it be based on user access to the global catalog? (someone mentioned that it worked fine under the pre-windows2000domain admin group - but this isn't from a good source so it may be suspect) If so we don't want to give an outside vendor that kind of power so maybe we can create a special group?  - Testing - Can Administrator login as a user without the user's password? I'm reconfiguring and setting back up a domain. I want to test configuration changes across the board and want to confirm changes made in System Policies, User Policies, and Active Directory. I want to know if I can login as a particular user or several users (I am primary Administrator) on clients without having their passwords and without resetting their passwords also? Roaming profiles, etc. seem to work okay on some users accounts but not on others. I'm thinking I need to check Control Panel > System > Advanced and see if the user is set to roam, etc. on each client PC. Yes? No? I want to fix AND TEST after hours so when employees return in the morning everything is smooth as silk. Besides the Profile settings in Control Panel and possibly some folder permission issues, is there anything else that would cause inconsistent implementation of otherwise universal Policy and AD settings?  - LDAP Query Question This question is in reguards to how AD responds to an LDAP Authentication Request coming from a non-Microsoft RADIUS server. What I need to know is if AD returns the password from a LDAP authentication request in MS_CHAP_v2 format or is it in Clear Text ? We are trying to configure several devices for a secure wireless signon. On the client side is a Windows XP Pro SP2 laptop using the Windows Zero Config service. 802.1x authentication WPA/TKIP and EAP-PEAP/MS_CHAP_V2 manually sign-on RADIUS server (Juniper SBR 6.0.1) acceptes the requests without a problem. But when it tryies to authenticate the MS_CHAP it fails everytime. So I'm wondering is what is AD sending back to RADIUS. Any help would be great. I haven't been at this company very long and maybe there was a good reason why they adopted the idea of making the user login id to be their initials, but it's very cumbersome.  - Synchronization issues I manage a very small Win2k network - 3 servers (One PDC, one BDC, and one Terminal server), 7 workstations - the function is mainly to give access to Windows sessions in a predominantly Unix environment. Anyway, to cut a long story short, the BDC was switched off for a couple of days (over a weekend) and the system has lost synchronization. So far this has not caused a problem - users can logon, and things seem to be working, but I have no doubt that soon this will change. I've tried to use the server manager to re-sync, but the options for sychronization are greyed out on all the servers. Has anyone got any bright ideas that may start the machines re-synchronizing? An auditor discovered several accouns with Blank Passwords in a MultiDomain AD structure arround the world As far as i know, the Win2003 AD never had a "free" Default Domain Policy to allow that, the DDP is the Default since the initial build of th AD. Ok, let's say that an Admin disabled temporarily th DDP for a few moments and allowed certain accouns to be created with blank passwords. Today, the DDP is configured to allow only complex passwords. 10 accounsts in the domain (among 1.200 other accounts) were found with blank passwords. When we reset thoses passwords, the ADUC allows.. BLANK passwords!!!!! Only in the 10 aaccounts created in 2007 (The AD was created on 2004).  - External Trust Between W2K and Server 2003 I am attempting to set up a two-way external trust between a Windows 2000 AD domain and a Server 2003 domain. They are on different subnets, accessible to one another via VPN. They can see each other's DNSs, and WINS is up and running and they can see each other that way. Everything on the Server 2003 side works fine. Verifying the trust works without a hitch. However, on the Windows 2000 server, when I go to verify the trust, I get a dialog stating "The credentials supplied conflict with an existing set of credentials". I'm at logger heads here. One users has half his documents copied over. Looks like the other user has all his documents. Currently their MYdocuments is pointing back to original path on C:.  - Forest Root DC Single Label host name Our network has 4 locations, but the main location is the only one that has AD, the others have NT4. In our main site we have 3 DC's. The forest root DC is in the nj1.com domain, but its fully qualified domain name is server.nj1. There is no .com. This server is also our FSMO role holder. The other two server are servername.nj1.com. I am trying to move the FSMO roles and demote it, but when I tried to transfer the roles I get errors. When I run dcdiag I get DNS guid errors. The domain with the most users on it, we upgraded the PDC to Active Directory Server and now have a Active Directory Server with 2 NT4 BDC's running in a Mixed Mode Environment.
