I am having trouble promoting a computer to domain controller in a network
that already has 2 DCs. The Active Directory Installation Wizard says, "The
version of the Active Directory schema of the source forest is not compatible
with the version of Active Direcotyr on this computer." and it suggests that
I use ADPREP.

When I run ADPREP on the PDC in any of the 3 configurations, it says,
"Forest-wide information has already been updated." or "Domain-wide
information has already been updated."

My only idea is that the existing DCs are Windows Server 2003 and I am
promoting Windows Server 2003 R2.

Could the R2 vs R1 be the issue or is there something else?

Did you try adprep from the /second/ CD of your R2 set? You need to run
that one.

cheers,

Thank you. That was the solution. I was using adprep from the original discs.
