Keep getting an error message when trying to import excel file into Outlook
contact list.

An error has occurred in the MS Excel 97-2003 translator while getting the
contents of a file system.

The MS Excel 97 -03 file "..... \Email sample insert.xls" has no named
ranges. Use MS Excel 97-03 to name the range of date you want to import.

What does this mean

Well err it means "name the range". If you don't know how to do this, the
easiest answer is to do a File-Save As and save as a csv file and import
that.
Could be a good idea to learn how to name a range though, for the CV.....

Ok, saved as csv file, but then cannot select that file during the import
process - also have save file in excel with headers and get ODBC excel driver
error - too many fields defined.
