I inadvertantly moved a group of contacts into a category I do not want them
in. I have deleted the category from the Master list, but the cateogory is
still attached to all. Problem is that I have the contacts that I moved also
in many other different categories. How do I just eliminate a specific
cateogry from a large group?

select all of the items that need to have the category removed - right click
and select the category to remove it.
