No matter how I try to do it, I can't get the colours to stay on my
calendar items in Outlook.

I originally tried to create custom categories with pretty colours and
custom names, but after shutting down outlook (and the pc), upon next
restart, all the colours were blank and the labels were described as
"not in the master category list".

I tried again with the categories/colours already in outlook and just
renamed them, but the same thing happened and in the morning they were
all plain white again.

So I tried a final time and just used the categories/colours without
renaming and it happened again.

I've googled to try to find a solution but nothing I've read is
relevant or works for my prob.

Am I doomed to a life of black & white, or can someone suggest
something to help me?

In *.outlook.general, "How do I set master category list in Outlook 2007",
we have the same discussion but not an answer yet.

What type of default mail accoutn do you have, is it IMAP?

Our mail account is POP/SMTP.

I read (or tried to read) the other post you referred to but it went a
little over my head.

I only get the master category message when I create my own
categories. When I rename the defaults or just use them as they are,
they just lose their colour at next restart.

I guess I figure that I should at the very least be able to colourise
my calendar using the default categories.

Thanks
k

Because you talked about *our* mail account, do have another mail server?

What happens if you right click on the top folder (Personal Folders) and
choose Properties, Update to Color Categories? Can you then create your own
categories?

Apologies for my delayed reply - I've been experimenting each time I
turn the pc on.

Your suggestion sort of works. When I restart outlook, and I follow
your instructions (which I have to do every time I start outlook) it
resets the colours/labels to what it thinks it should be, usually
using a combination of 2 categories - it gives it 2 categories - the
one I gave it, but with a different colour, and another with the
colour I wanted it to be but with a different name. For example, if i
create Birthdays as light green and Important is orange, if I change
Birthdays to orange and even if I delete the Important category, when
I come back, it's a category called Personal (which was also light
green) and has another category called Important as well which is
orange. I don't think I've explained it very well - basically, it
chooses the colours while reverting some and adding others.

I've fiddled each time I restart and nearly got it right, and will
keep trying til it co-operates the way I want it to.

Thanks again
k

Category names are stored twice, once in the Master Category List and once
with an appointment in your calendar if you assign the category to it.

Where do you see disappearing or changed names, in the Master Category List
(click the Categorize button, then All Categories to see that) or in your
appointments (shown in the calendar folder or ir you open that appointment)?
