Greetings,

After running a netdiag on my second domain controller, i seem to be missing
the sysvol volume on it, and also the dns test is faling as well. how could
this happen? do i have to demote dc2 and then re-promote it?

Repadmin is spitting out the following:
Repadmin experienced the following error trying to resolve the DC_NAME: dc*

Error: An error occured:

Win32 Error 8419(0x20e3): The DSA object could not be found.

What's the DNS configuration on the 2nd server? What do netdiag and
dcdiag say? Any useful output from there?

Point dc2's primary DC IP in network configurations to dc1's IP. But I
see you have a lot of more things to check. Have a look at DC1, are
there the service records for dc2 present?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816587/en-us

For how long is DC2 working/not working now?

If there's not much about it and you pointed the primary DNS server to
DC1's ip, I'd see if I can demote the server and re-promote it again.

Greetings,

I pointed it to DC01 but it's still failing. The plan is to have DC02 take
over and decommisino DC01. I've installed exchange on this server, so by
doing removing/readding it to the domain, will this affect my excchange
setup?

Err... yes, that'll mess up Exchange. Does this Exchange work, anyway?
You know that it's not recommended installing Exchange directly on a DC?
Did that DC ever work correctly?

Hi Again,

This DC was working fine until an unexpected shutdown occured and now the
whole thing is screwed, and of course the event log's dont indicate much.
Thats why i was trying to explore all possible solutions :). Its so weird
that it's not picking up the authorative DNS servers.

So now would be a good time to put in the last backup and restore the
machine. I hope there is an up-to-date backup (max 60 days old?)

the machine was built only 4 days ago, so there are no backups, its not
biggy, we can just rebuild it. here's another question for you though. when
a machine is first promoted as a DC are the sysvol and netlogon shares
automatically replicated to the new dc from other dc's? i'm looking inside
the dcpromo.log but can't find the replication taking place

Yes, the replication takes place during the dcpromo setup - I'm not sure
as to how detailed this is written to the log file.

Roger that... thanks for all your help again :). hopefully demoting and
promoting it will do the trick

You can rebuild the sysvol non-authoritatively without having to demote and
promote
