We have win 2003 domain. since we have branch offices, so we want to take
benefit of win 2008 RODC feature. we want to install win 2008 RODC for our
branch offices. The question is, for RODC, do we need to also have a writable
win 2008 domain controller in our domain or win 2003 DC would work in such
case ?????? Second question is, what all steps do we need to take for
introducing win 2008 RODC in our win 2003 domain.
For your info. our forest n domain functional level is "Win 2003"
Looking forward to your support.

You have to have at least one writable Windows Server 2008 DC in the domain
(preferably in the adjacent/hub AD site). There is a fairly long list of
items you need to consider as part of RODC deployment (from schema
extensions, through placement considerations, site coverage, admin
delegation, to application compatibility), so I'd recommend reviewing
http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/library/ea8d253e-0646-490c-93d3-b78c5e1d9db71033.mspx?mfr=true
before you start...

you need at least ONE writable W2K8 in your AD domain to support an RODC.
RODCs require W2K8 RWDCs for authentication forwarding and replication of
the domain partition the RODC is joined to.
My suggestion is to have enough W2K8 RWDCs centrally to support the RODCs in
the branches

IN the (near) future I hope to blog more about this
