Could someone please clarify this...

Is it possible to use pass-through authentication from a domain acct in
domain1 to access a share in domain2 where there is a matching local user
acct on the server with the share in domain2 (same user name & pw)? (these
two domains don't have trust setup)

I guess I am not clear that if you were to try to access a share on a server
in another domain does it pass username & password to authenticate which
might match a local acct and work? or does it pass domain\useraccount &
password in which case it wouldn't work?

Thanks for any assistance on this as it is confusing to me.

That seems to be the case when NTLM authentication comes into play...
