I'm trying to add a secondary DC to my existing domain. The existing DC is
running W2k Server with SP4 and all patches. The new server is running W2003
Server R2 Standard edition with SP2 and all patches.

I have successfully run adprep /forestprep and adprep /domainprep on my W2K
server but I still am getting an error message that the forest is NOT
prepared!!!

Error message:
"The Active Directory Installation Wizard cannot continue because the forest
is not prepared for installing Windows Server 2003. Use the Adprep
command-line tool to prepare both the forest and the domain. For more
information about using the Adprep, see Active Directory Help.

The version of the Active Directory schema of the source forest is not
compatible with the version of the Active Directory on this computer."

Any ideas what might be the issue here?

Thanks,

/Adde

Just to verify - you copied the adprep.exe tool and all the LDF files in the
same folder from your R2 installation media to your Windows 2000 DC and ran
it?

Cheers
Ken

I think I might have found the problem. My media came with SP1 and when I ran
ADPREP my W2K box only seems to support schema version 30 (=Original release
version of Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft Windows Server 2003
Service Pack 1 (SP1)) rather then 31. Where can I get a newer version of
Adprep? Apparently I need version 5.2.3790.2075

Actually I ran the ADPREP directly from the R2 media. I did not copy anythig
to the W2k server... Could that be the problem...

Problem solved! It turned out that the newer required version of the ADPREP
was available on the second R2 install disk... in a folder called
CMPNENTS\R2\ADPREP

Had I known that it would have saved me soooo much time.

Yes, join the club on that one. It seems that MS could have included that
fact on some type of documentation included with the media.

I had to find out from these boards too.
