I have a Netware server with CIFS running called "WTWGRAPHICS2." It's
not connected to the Windows 2003 AD. I would like to remove this
computer and replace it with a windows box, also called "WTWGRAPHICS2."

However, I get the error message "You were not connected to the
network because a duplicate name exists on the network."

I searched AD U&C, DNS and WINS,and hosts file for mention of
WTWGRAPHICS2, but I can't find anything.

Any ideas appreciated.

If not in WINS, and it was not used as an additional name on a server, such
as a reg entry providing multiple NetBIOS names, check Network Neighborhood
and see if it still in there. In a multi-segmented environment, it may take
some time for the browser service to clean it out. Try pinging the name,
even though it may not respond, what IP does it resolve to? Does the IP look
familiar?

It's not in NetHood, doesn't respond to host name pings. I found some
references to the name in the LanMan sections of the registry in the AD
servers, but taking them out didn't help.

When I try to change the name, the error message pops up *immediately*
I mean, it's there before my finger lets off the Enter key. It's
obviously not reallly fdoing any kind of network query to check the name.

Forgot to mention, group names, computer names, usernames, domain names,
workgroup names, and anything else you can think of that has a name, can
also be a dupe.
