Hi:
Need urgent help here -
One of the domain controller with Infrastruture Role crashed. Other domain
controllers carry other roles. On AD Users and computers, under Infrastruture
tab, Operation Manager - has "Error" in the field, Next line is: "the
current operation master is offline. The role cannot be transferred" It has
the "chnage" botton on right.
How do I tranfer instratruture role to another domain controller? And clean
up AD for this server. I am thinking about getting ride of this server since
it's old. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You can seize the roles using this:

Using Ntdsutil.exe to transfer or seize FSMO roles to a domain controller
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/255504/en-us

The Global Catalog setting you just have to set it yourself manually,...it
is not something that is "seized".

Make sure the Clients point to the "living" DC first in their TCP/IP Specs.
You might also be able to give the "living" DC the IP# of the dead one
temporarily as a secondary IP#,...just don't bring the old one back with
that address and cause an IP conflict. You can jocky the IP#s back the way
they should be after the dead one is back alive,...then DCPromo it back to
being a DC again,...then shift the Roles how you want them.

Hello,

You can seize it:

If you bring the dea one back with the same name and IP# when finished, you
may not have to mess with any MetaData Cleanup,...but you might want to get
a second opinion with that.

I personally would try to bring the DC back with a Tape backup using Active
Directory Restore Mode. I think it would be the least disruption and you
probably won't have to do anything else.

Thanks. I will try to seize the role according to the article. The server
harware is out of warranty and it had hard disk error and we might just
retire this one.
Thanks.

You can't just name a dc the same and expect it to still work. You need to
either do a full restore from backup or do a metadata cleanup. I would do
the metadata cleanup and then repromote a new dc and you can name the
repromoted dc the same name. I always change the name (Increment the count
on the end of the name) but keep the ip address the same.

Yea, I knew that building a machine with the same name is still a different
machine,...I just wasn't sure about the Metadata side of things if the new
DC had the same name in the end when finished. So I was hoping someone would
clarify that.

Now if you restore one from tape using active directory restore mode it
would be the "same machine",...then there would not be anything to clean up?
You'd just have to wait for AD Replication to catch up as the DC with the
authortiative copy of AD refreshes the non-authoritative copy on the one
resotred?

Correct, but if it is only a dc I would just clean up and repromote.
Restores are a hassle.
