I get the following error when I try to change the computer name of a
workstation that is already a member of the domain "The following error
occurred to rename the computer to xxxx. The user name could not be found."
xxx is the new name that I am trying to use.

The twist is that this only happens on one physical site. I recently joined
a new server running Windows 2003 Server R2 that is acting as a domain
controller, DHCP, DNS and general File Server. This server is connected to
the 2 original DCs via Internet on our VPN tunnel. The 2 original DCs are
running Windows 2003 Server (original release).

When I change names of a workstation from the site that has the 2 original
DCs there is no problem.

I've seen on the Internet suggesting that I remove the old name in the
Active Directory, then log on to the workstation locally and change the name,
reboot and re-join to the domain. I will try this, but in any regards this
sounds like a work-around.

I am interested in knowing why this happens and how to come with a permanent
fix.

Thanks,
Manny

Hello Manny,

On all DC's run diagnostics to check for errors, use dcdiag /v, nediag /v
and repadmin /showrepl to start.

Best regards
