Hi,

I am new to using ADAM, actually it just got dumped in my lap from a
layoff. OK, so the scoop is we have an ADAM server setup, it is NOT
connected to our domain but rather a test domain. After further
investigation there is no DC in this so called "test domain". Now heres
the question. Do we need to have a DC setup in a test domain to have
ADAM work?

From everything i have been reading today ADAM uses domain accounts,
right? So in order to get this software to work it needs to be joined
to a domain correct?

My apologies for what seems to be an ignorant question.

It depends on what you are using ADAM. ADAM does not necessarily require
any affinity to a domain. You would need a domain IF:

You wanted to bind to ADAM using a domain account
You wanted to use ADAM for bind proxy authentication for domain accounts
You wanted to use ADAM for pass through authentication for domain accounts
ADAM needs to replicate with other ADAM servers in a domain and you don't
want to have to deal with local service accounts with matching passwords
(NTLM hack)

There may also be other reasons why you want the server itself domain-joined
such as management.

So, the thing you need to figure out is what this ADAM server is actually
used for and what dependencies it takes. If it was doing what it was
supposed to be doing before while not associated with a domain, then that
can likely continue.

If you don't know what it is being used for and no one else does either,
stop the service and wait for someone to complain. :)

One problem that they might encounter is that ADAM admin account was
assigned from the now non-existent domain. But I am speculating.
