Installing xp64 Trial on Averatec 4100
Hi,
I just bought a Averatec 4100 with a Turion 64 processor. I have downloaded
the free trial for xp64 and burned the iso file to CD. Forgive my ignorance,
but is installing the trial as easy as restarting the notebook with the CD
in, then selecting boot from CD?
Any problems you can think of as this notebook uses Pheonix Firstware
Recover Pro software so there is no recovery CD but it it is on a seperate
partition on the hard drive?
It is a brand new notebook so I would like some good information before I
try to install the XP64.
Thanks in advance,

Problems with first build
I built our first PC with my son and can't get XP 64 to work. I have
installed it several times, and it will run in safe mode but when it boots
from the hard disk in normal mode it inquires about booting from the optical
drive , then displays the Windows logo, then a string of numbers in the lower
right hand of the screen, then it goes blank. I cannot get it to load drivers
in safe mode from a CD. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Change in signing policy for 64-bit drivers for Vista and Longhorn
If you are not aware of it Microsoft announced a change in its policy on
drivers for 64-bit Vista last week. See the paper at
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/platform/64bit/kmsigning.mspx The
change here is that prior to this while drivers needed to be signed an
administrator could sign a driver for a computer or a domain.
Many people in the driver development community are disturbed by this change
since makes it harder for a small firm to ship and support drivers. In
particular a lot of the freeware tools that have a kernel component will
probably never make it to Vista 64-bit. Also, I know of small firms that
are reconsidering their product plans for Vista. For those who want to see
the discussion in the driver development community, go to
http://www.osronline.com and sign up for the NTDEV newgroup, then look for
"X64 Windows Vista to require signed drivers"
At the end of the paper is the feedback email address for this stuff. If
enough of
us make rational comments to that address, Microsoft may realize there is a
problem.

Network not showing up
I have Win 64 running on an AMD64 3200 chip and connected to a Workgroup via

Are there known issues with the networking on Win 64? How do I figure out

User Profiles
Hi, I am finally thinking about moving from the 32-bit XP to the 64-bit. Has
it gotten any better? I gave the initial 64-bit beta test a shot going back a
few years ago , maybe 2 years or so ago, and it was a "nightmare" nothing
worked right due mainly to the fact that it was indeed still in Beta but also
because the drivers for the hardware just were not there. Has the situation
gotten any better? Another thing I know it is impossible to do an upgrade
from 32-bit to 64-bit so I was wondering if anyone has any tips that might be
useful if I went through with the transition. Another thing what are the
limitations between user profiles in the 32-bit environment and the 64-bit
environment what kind of issues do you think would arise if a user was to
copy the user profile from a 32-bit environment over to a 64bit? I know that
the shortcuts present in the profile won't work until the programs associated
with them are reinstalled and the shortcuts are re linked to their respective
apps. Thanks for any help! Tag: winxp 64 Tag: 26476

Merge 32 and 64bit edition in one distribution!
Why are there two different editions to choose from?
I have heard MS continues this 'freedom' in Vista.
Wouldn't it be simpler to pack both editions on a DVD and build a nice
installer to choose the right edition for your System?
Otherwise, Vista x64 will become something like the 'pro x64 edition'.

The only problem i have that is bothering me is when i try and move a

moving up a block of pixels at a time.
does anybody have any idea what is causing this, and how i can fix it?
appart from that minor issue, im enjoying my change to x64 loads! everything
seems fractionaly faster and im able to use the advantages of SP2 which i
couldnt with XP Home SP1 :O lol
help would be much appreciated on my little issue.

News: Windows Vista x64 To Require Signed Drivers
"For Windows Vista and later versions of the Windows family of operating
systems, kernel-mode software must have a digital signature to load on
x64-based computer systems.
This paper describes how to manage the signing process for kernel-mode code
for Windows Vista, including how to obtain a Publisher Identity Certificate
(PIC), guidelines for protecting keys, and how to sign a driver package by
using tools that are provided in the Windows Driver Kit (WDK).
Why digital signatures? For both consumer and enterprise users of Windows
around the world, protecting personal and corporate data remains a top
concern. Microsoft is committed to implementing new ways to help restrict
the spread of malicious software. Digital signatures for kernel-mode
software are an important way to ensure security on computer systems.
Digital signatures allow the administrator or end user who is installing
Windows-based software to know whether a legitimate publisher has provided
the software package. When users choose to send Windows Error Reporting data
to Microsoft after a fault or other error occurs, Microsoft can analyze the
data to know which publishers' software was running on the system at the
time of the error. Software publishers can then use the information provided
by Microsoft to find and fix problems in their software."

X64 is worth the effort.
Yes! X64 is worth the effort. Many thanks to "planetamd64.com", Andre,
Augie, Barb, Carlos, Charlie, Christian, Darryl, John, Mike and too many
others to name. I started with the CPP version that had the Windows 2000
look with very few drivers available. At that time it was a daily search for
drivers with very little support from manufacturers, except Nvidia, using
the excuse that the operating system wasn't a released version, now that x64
is released the excuse is that they're waiting for Vista to be released. I
have 2 desktops and 2 laptops that are using Windows XP Professional x64
Edition exclusively, all are currently dual boot with x86 but the only time
x86 is opened is to verify that everything is updated. The operating system
is very stable. The best advice is from Charlie to research first and
determine if x64 is for you. For me the only time x64 is an advantage is for
video capture and editing. Like John I have a few old programs that don't
work but when I want to use them I boot into x86. I use an USR 5610B modem
for faxing documents, Epson CX3800 works for printing and scanning,
Retrospect 7 works for backup or disk images, Leadtek TV2000 XP expert works
for TV and video capture, ShowShifter for watching TV (unless Media Encoder
9 64-bit is installed), Zenet ZEW1601 wireless LAN (Ralink chipset) works,
both laptops have Broadcom wireless that work. Tag: winxp 64 Tag: 26342

Installing xp x 64 bit Trial... Help needed
Hi All,
I have Athlon 64 dualcore 3800, 300gb, 2gb DDR, Asus A8N
Mobo, Nvidia GeoForce 6800. Windows Media Centre 2005 windows xp Home sp2
all updates. No worms, spyware, malware, viruses, trojans etc etc.
I have just downloaded the xp x 64 pro trial from MS 558 mb and as per
instructions burnt it to a disc. I tried using the setup file but it tells
me that i need to boot from the disc. I tried but it will not boot from the
disc, I have changed the boot priority from hd to cd drive but still
nothing, it still boots into windows as if nothing was in the cd drive.
I only have a C drive at the moment but I do have partition magic, do I need
to create a partition to install the trial?
What is stopping me from installing the trial? Could somebody take me
through the procedure Please.
Another problem that I have is that I am using a 26" HD TV as my monitor and
it doesn't show the boot sequence, it only shows when I arrive at the Login
screen why is this? This means that I have to change to my smaller pc
monitor whenever I want to do anything with the bios settings or boot

Antivirus - Avast Sucks! But I knew that already
I have been running Avast Home Edition since x64 Beta two Novembers ago. So
I have been using it for over a year.
It's always cherrily announcing to me after a reboot (after hanging up at
shutdown, of course :):
"Virus Database Has Been Updated!"
Yay.
I was extremely skeptical at first. I had previously recommended and
installed the Win32 versions of Avast for clients, and they were the ones to
get infected, whereas my other clients running other AV were okay. So I
stopped installing it.
So when I found out that they were the only ones to make something x64
compatible, after trying to get ClamWin and others working, I did give it
another try.
Well, I got a letter in the mail from my internet provider today, that I was
sending out SPAM and to check my machine for infections. If it was to
continue, my service would be suspended.
So i went to Housecall (http://housecall.trendmicro.com) which now works in
Firefox, using Java. And lo and behold, I had quite a few it seems (see
attachment JPGs).
So I did some digging, as I really dont want to go to Norton or McAfee, and
Trend Micro (which has been screwing up lately as well) doesnt make a x64
version as of yet. And I did find that the free ones, like Avast and AVG are
in the 'You get what you pay for' category, which I pretty much suspected,
but was a dumbass about it.
Now as I search for more conclusions, I find what I needed to know months
ago...
Virus Bulletin ran a test of the various AV and came up with these results,
which reflect my experience (with the exception of Norton and McAfee):
http://www.techsupportalert.com/free-vs-paid-av.htm
So I guess I have to now try Nod32? Anybody can vouch for that over Avast
besides eset themselves? How long have you been using it? On what platforms?
compared to what? and what's your conclusion at this time?

M2 socket in Q2. . .
Hi,
The new socket is on the doorstep, and I want a new project. Now is not the
time to by a new board, apparently. Have anyone seen it fitted to a board
yet? Functioning, perhaps?
I understand that it will support DDR2 memory, but appart from that, what
will it bring to us? It's 940 pin configuration but it's got to be more than
a spruced up Opteron device, surely? Or is that the aim, to bring Opteron
performance to the Athlon?
And the memory, the data looks good. Some of that is usually hype - will the
performance live up to natural expectations?

WMP repair without doing a complete reinstall of Windows 64
I am using the Action Pack version of Windows 64 but somehwo my WMP is
corrupted I have tried uninstalling it using ADD/Remove to no avail as it
seems to just hide unhide it. and tried using SFC /SCANNOW also is not fixing
it. Of course there is no stand alone installer for WMP on the MS site even
although it tires going there to reinstall.
That being said it also seems to be effecting my install of NERO 7 (seems
dependant for its media tools on MWP).
So I guess I am asking any chance on getting a standalone repair/installer

the complete OS?
If reloading is the only choice I guess I will have to live with it but was
