Hi,
I just developed this problem with windows xp pro and was wondering if
someone could help me out.
My computer has been working alright until one morning it starts up fine but
when I get all my desktop icons and everything, I get an hour glass
indicating it is busy doing something. I have waited for ages for this to
stop but it does not seem to stop. The last time I tried to use an older
startup configuration but htere is not an old configuration stored. I have
tried starting in safe mode and it gives the same problem.
I do not want to reformat the HD and reinstall as I will loose a lot of
valuable information and data that I have not backed up.
Any assistance will be very much welcome.

Check your start up files to see if there any fishy applications starting up
with the system. Click Start > Run > type in "msconfig" > startup (tab)
uncheck applications you believe might be slowing down the system that are
not necessarily needed at start up. Is this on Windows x64 or x86 by the
way?
