Sidewinder Gotcha!
I know 64bit is targeted as a serious workstation OS but I thought I would
pass on my latest 64bit gotcha!
I plugged in my Microsoft Force Feedback Wheel for the first time since
upgrading and...nothing.
After checking the Microsoft Web site I remembered the hardware was
discontinued a year or so back so I guess the drivers for them when never
ported.
Therefore ALL Microsoft sidewinder games controllers will not work in
Win64...ever!
So if you have any of the following sidewinder hardware get ready to through
them away if you upgrade to Win64:
FreeStyle Pro
Game Pad
Force Feedback Pro
Precision Pro
Standard
Force Feedback Wheel
...I love my Force Feedback Wheel <sniff>

Active X
When on-line, I get prompted to install Active X several times (depending on
the site).
I click and select install now and 1 of 2 things happens. It either asks
for the run now or save, or it does nothing.
I've tried the install when asked.
2 or 3 pages later, it will ask again. I selected install 4 or 5 times in
one night.
So, 'is active x 64 bit compliant'?
Is there an issue with IE64?
A combination of the two?
Most importantly, how do I fix it? Tag: voice commands Tag: 3901
I've been wondering (Re: Orders)
I've just been thinking... If the orders opened up on the 25th of april...
wouldn't you think that at least *some* copies had been produced for this
25th date? Did *anyone* receive their Trade-In copies? If so, then that
clears everything up, they made a few, and ran out in the first day, right?
But I've not heard of anyone receiving their Trade-In copies... Just gift
copies and OEM purchases...
Isn't it strange that they didn't have *any* ready to ship?
FYI, I only recently ordered (my OEM COA wasn't being accepted until last
week), so I know I'm not gonna see it for weeks... I just found it strange
that the trade-in program would have been activated without any supply
(aparently). Anyone want to add some insight into this?

Reverting to windows 32 bit xp
Just though I would drop by one last time and say thank you for the help and
goodbye :) I am going back for two reasons. one, I don't think there will be
64bit drivers available for things like printers, scanners, webcams, ipods
for a good long time if ever, companys put there development money where the
market is and x64 will be a hobby os for sometime to come and. I am not going
to run a system that has problems installing games :) and I know there are
ways to trick the games into installing. Two, it appears that MS and Intell
and the recording industry are going to force some fool copyright software
down our throats in the dual core pentiums and if thou I do not beleive it is
right to steal software I do not think this is the way to go, besides I am
real tired of calling india everytime I want to reinstall windows xp home.
MS has to understand that that people in poor countrys will continue to steal
the os no matter what they do, I am amazed when I travel to the carribean how
many people do this. So, thanks again and good luck with x64.

Is it safe to install the windows 64bit Edition Trial or otherwise
My Question is: Is it safe to install the windows64bit edition trial or
otherwise on my laptop? Its an AMD64 HP DP533AV R3200 Compaq Laptop, 512MB
RAM, 40GB, DVD/CDR. Because it says in the manual that my currently
installed windows xp home edition is 'OPTIMIZED" for my laptop. If I install
the windows 64bit edition OS will it still be optimized for whatever special
reason my OS has to be optimized to whatever setup i have on my laptop?
Thank you, i just hate having to reformat and install everything again plus
copy my files back whenever microsoft doesnt tell you things ahead of time or
if HP doesnt, because last time when i tried installing windows SP2 my laptop
didnt restart anymore, and then HP said they dont recommend installing the

XP 64 Bit, IIS and Access 2000
Any help with this is appreciated.
I upgraded my pc to 64 bit motherboard, processor and XP 64 bit.
When I try to access an Access 2000 database, using ASP on my local pc I
receive an error "'800a0ea9' Provider is not specified and there is no
designated default provider."
The offending code is "strConn = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;" & "Data
Source=" & Server.MapPath("/db/sample.mdb")" It works fine on the net and the
db is located under wwwroot/db/.
I'm a newbie to IIS, but I'm pretty sure I have permissions correct.
Thinking it's a driver issue I've downloaded the latest jet, but on instal
this errors "This KB829558 is for a different hardware platform."
Thinking it may be MDAC I downloaded MDAC_TYP.EXE, but this errors "This
setup does not support installing on this operating system."
My code works fine on the hosting server, so I don't feel it's the code.

user account recovery...
for background: i'm working a presario r3000 series with amd athlon 64,
trial version of xp pro 64-bit and office xp pro package. in loading the
customer preview version of xp64 (before the trial set which is now
running), i did a full install rather than a partitioned run. the result, i
overwrote the existing user accounts and computer name from the previous xp
pro 32-bit os. no problem, except i had a suite of files encrypted. and, no,
i had neither designated a recovery agent nor copied the certificate to a
floppy/other computer (yes, i know, STUPID!).
i've gone back and found the user name (e.g., steve(steve@STEVESLAPTOP)) and
certificate generated during the encryption process by digging through the
recycler folders. but, since i switched user account names and renamed the
computer (no longer, e.g., STEVESLAPTOP) during the xp64 load, i still can't
access the suite of encrypted files no matter what i've tried.
my question, then: is there a way to restore/recreate that user account so
that xp sees the certificate that remains on the machine? i haven't tried
it -- because it seems too stunningly simple, occam's razor not
withstanding -- but i doubt that simply renaming the computer and creating
an account with the same name as before would work. it's incredibly
frustrating to be this close to recovering data and not knowing how to do so
(if it's even possible).

What has it been?
What has it been, five weeks now that the replacement program became
available for us to order Windows 64 bit?
I'm growing anxious now (the performance increases I expect for our agency
should be huge!). If it is the fifth week already, then the orders should
have started shipping last week to the end of next week.
So, within the next two weeks, we should start to see "Pending" changed to
"Shipped."
My order number is 1685. What's yours? Are you closer to the beginning? I
know this is speculative, but how many do you think the fulfillment company
is going to be able to ship per day? It's crazy I even ask because with the
technology that is available today, it shouldn't even be a question, but
with the problems that the fulfillment company has experienced from the
start with most people not able to get their orders to even go through, to
those that could get their orders placed not receiving e-mails, etc., I
think it's a question worth asking.

HP Laserjet x64 Drivers..... not!
I was wondering if anyone has been able to find HP laserjet 9050 printer
drivers for XP x64. While browsing HPs site, I found the following driver:
Listed as: Microsoft Windows XP 64-Bit Edition
file name: lj9040-9050psxp64-200364-en.exe
Now this driver fails to install and if you dig into the printer driver
inf you see that it is only for the IA64.
[HPC9050S.PPD.NTia64]
Now according to the MS requirements page, IA64 bit is not supported by
XP x64 (however the tech on HP live chat attempted to say that the HP
driver only supported IA64).....

We'll have to see if they still keep the link up.... All I have to say
is Argh!
