I have win xp pro x64, and have had a few problems, mainly freezes and
lack of printer drivers etc.. I was thinking to upgrade to vista and I
have a few questions:

1 is the 64 bit vista a much-improved version and am I going to have
the same problems?

2 can I upgrade to 32-bit vista and avoid some of these problems.

3 off topic slightly, but is it possible for me now to install win xp
pro (32 bit) on my system and have a dual boot option?

Cheers!

You cannot upgrade from XP Pro x64 to anything. No matter whether you
install a 64bit or 32bit edition of Vista you will need to do a clean
installation. Do NOT use custom install in Vista x86 to install Vista in
the same partition where you are presently running XP Pro x64 without doing
a full format first. You CAN use custom install to install Vista x64 in the
present partition.

Vista is not a much-improved version. It is a NEW version of Windows. You
have to determine what to install based on your software and hardware.

I do not recommend dual booting XP and Vista. While feasible, there are
incompatibilities such that booting into XP destroys most of your recovery
options in Vista. Search in microsoft.public.windows.vista.general on
"volsnap.sys" for details.

1. cannot tell fore sure, as my Xp Pro 64 was extremely stable. Vista is =
more so.
have found NO more printer drivers for vista then there were for XP Pro =
64 bit.

2. CANNOT upgrade from 64 bit to 32 bit either vista or xp.
you can create a new partition/disk and install either and use dual =
booting.

3.NO, it would require a new partition/drive. but the dual booting =
should work.

for your info. installing vista creates a whole new booting scenario. =
vista has its own boot manager. and labels the older
windows as Previous Windows in the boot menu.

to dual boot, you install the older system first because of this.

You will probably have the same problems with lack of drivers. You will
probably have software that won't move to Vista. Canon for one has drivers
for Vista64 for printers they never made drivers for on X64.

You can buy the full 32-bit version of Vista and do a clean install. Yes
you may avoid some driver problems. You may have program problems with
either. Some work others do not.

Yes, but you will have to follow instructions in Charlie's blog for
procedure when installing an older version of the OS, unless you are one of
the lucky ones. Relatively easy and if you decide to do it check back
before you do it and it will be easier.

Terry:
Windows XP x64 OEM qualifies as an upgradable operating system. You
can purchase and install the upgrade version of your choice instead of
purchasing the full version. The upgrade isn't free but it's available. When
you upgrade to Vista step 1 is to backup all important data and files. There
is no direct in place upgrade path to any version of Vista x64 from any
version of XP or W2K. A custom installation is required then desired
programs and data have to be reinstalled. Have a great day.
