Hi,
I wopnder if you guys can help me out of a hole! My evaluation period has
just expired. I have ordered a new copy of xp64, its going to take 3 days to
arrive.
So how do I get hold of my data on my desktop in the mean time, it wasnt a
shared file. Any ideas? I can fire up the machine, and it gives the message
that its expired, if I do not press ok and leave this message I can access my
shared files via another machine on my network, but I also need access to the
files I didnt share on the desktop (about 8gb of data).
As an aside, did I miss the warning that the trial was about to expire? Is
there a warning?
Thanks in advance

If this is the 'Trial', I'm not sure there is any warning, if it's a 'Beta'
warnings have been published. The way out of your predicament is to do
'Repair Install' I believe, have SATA and/or RAID drivers ready on Floppy if
you need them. All your 'MS Updates' will be gone, but your data is secure
and you'll have a few weeks of 'Grace' to clean up your stuff.

When it has timed out this is not going to work, except with the new copy.

You can use the Recovery Console and copy your desktop data. I would
suggest that you use an external hard drive due to the size if your BIOS
supports it or hook up another HD internally.

Ah, sorry yes - 'the new copy', thanks - but it should be the easiest method
as that is on it's way already.

If they can wait, that is the best way, if not, they can copy from the
recovery console

You can use the recovery console, as others have suggested, but here's a
trick that might work. Even though you didn't share it, there IS a share
there. Assuming your machine is called "x64machine" and that your system
drive is C:, you can connect to the share with:

net use * \\x64machine\C$

See if that will get you out of the problem.

Did you see how they all avoided the "Linux live CD" option for recovering
his files?

yup, sure did. I might use it, but it presumes he has something in hand that
we don't know about. We do know he has all of the requirements for this. ;)

Windows automatically creates "hidden" shares for all your local hard disk
drive letters, and a few other things (like admin$ for the windows
directory, for example.) A share that has a $ at the end of it is hidden,
but can be used if you know it's there and you have admin rights.
