I can make my new X64 machine dual boot with the 'old' drive from my ME machine

IE I have built a brand new X64 computer but am having trouble getting some
SCSI scanners working I have already put the old computer drive in the system
as well to access the data on it, is there any way I can retrospectivley make
it dual boot with the ME system that if already on the old disc.
Many thanks
Rob

If you can read the data on it, first I would set it as first in boot
priority in the BIOS to see if you can boot it. If so, you can add an entry
to the boot.ini file to point to it from your X64 drive.

I haven't done it personally, but you can try running bootcfg /add from
the recovery console and see if it offers you the ME system, and if so, it
should add the proper entries. I don't remember the format for the Pre XP
entries on the boot.ini but I am sure someone else can post them. First
things first, so do the test from the BIOS to see if you have a bootable
situation to begin with.

Please give details about your computer. Windows ME does not run correctly
if your system has more than 512MB of ram. If the new box has more than
that you may have issues.

Hi, Rob.

This issue hasn't come up in a long time, but we was a FAQ in
microsoft.public.win2000.file_systems 5+ years or so ago, when Win2K was
new.

There are several problems with what you want to do. The main one,
probably, is that the System Partition (usually Drive C:) on your WinXP HD
is most likely formatted NTFS. Win9x/ME cannot read, write - or even SEE -
an NTFS volume. Therefore, it certainly can't boot from one.

WinXP can easily use the WinME FAT32 volume, as you've seen, but that's a
long way from creating a dual-boot system with WinME. Even if you change
your BIOS to let you boot from your second HD to run WinME, you still would
not be able to read your NTFS volume or write any files to it from WinME.

You haven't told us the number of HDs in your new computer, its (or their)
size and how it is partitioned and formatted.

Yes. But it ain't quick or easy! If you are determined to do it, and you
are willing to invest a lot of time and effort, post back with more details
of your HDs and we can try to lay out the steps for you. In the meantime,
you might want to take a look at this web page:

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_repair_9x.htm

And be sure you understand this KB article, because the terms are
counterintuitive, but essential to an understanding of dual-booting:

It may not run at all on the new system. There are a number
of hardware drivers required for the system to run and if
your old ME doesn't have the correct drivers for your new
board, it won't run. nVidia is one that states their new
chips don't support Win 95, 98, and ME because there are no
drivers for the motherboard!

Interesting, because by the time I installed ME I had 680meg of ram and ME
was just as smooth as glass for me. Never had any SOD or other problems. I
switched to XP as soon as it came out but my wife is still using it and has
never had a problem. She will probably switch to Vista when it comes out as
she has loved it on my system.

I too ran ME with "excessive" ram, 768mb if I remember correctly, I tried
98se with it as well but it wouldn't boot, 512 was definitely the cut-off
there.

Thanks to all I had a suspicion that this was going to be the case, it looks
like I am going to have to run an old machine on ME somwhere on the network
just to get my SCSI scanners to work or go out and spend megabucks to replace
them

While it very well may not work, since you already have the drive in your
system, a 5 second change to the BIOS will tell you. There have been a
number of posters on the Vista site still dual booting Win98 successfully.
Except for SATA drivers, most drivers for the system are added AFTER the
system is up and running to improve performance and not required to get the
system up.
