    - Run 32-bit Executable from 64-bit Shared Folder OK, this might be a wierd question, but I just want to satisfy my curiosity: I have a 32-bit executable (c++ compiled on 32-bit windows). The executable is sitting in a shared folder on a 64-bit machine. When I try to run the executable on a 32-bit machine from the share, I get an error. But if I copy it to the 32-bit machine, then run it, it works fine. Can anyone explain to me why it won't run from the 64-bit share? Tag: svchost.exe - Application Error Tag: 39642

    - Brand Spankin New Okay, most people are going to think I am a hardened fool for this, but I just bought a new HP Pavilion a1630n desktop. It has the AMD 64X2 live chip, 2Gb, 250 GB Hard drive, 256Mb (shared) 6130LE graphics and the Realtec HD Audio. I haven't even gotten it warmed up really yet. I just finished burning the XP restore disks and I am getting ready to freshly load RC2 X64 on it. Is there anything I should know about before hanging myself?     - Killer blow for x64 compatability... I had great hopes that x64 would progress from a niche OS, with Vista x64, but Microsoft have killed that.. Why? the "Works with Vista" logo.. There is now much less pressure on hardware manufacturers to produce x64 drivers, to get the "Certified For Vista" logo, they can now just get it working with 32bit Vista, and slap a "Works With Vista" sticker on the box.     - Dropped OS SATA Drive I am using an Asus AN8-SLI Deluxe motherboard. C:\ & D:\ drives are Western Digital Raptors 10,000 rpm units. E:\ & F:\ are Western Digital & Maxtor 7500 rpm drives. All drives are SATA based and use new lock on connectors. None are setup for RAID configuration. Okay, here is my problem. Every few weeks my C:\ drive is not found and is missing from the bios listing. On other occasions all drives are shown in the bios but my OS is not found. Sometimes, after the machine has been running for a while, everything is lost and it reports that it cannot write to the drive. All the other drives are always available, only the C:\ drive gets dropped. I have run all tests on the C:\ drive using a WD test and everything comes back positive without any errors. The temporary cure is to disconnect D.C. to the other three drives, check all connects, reboot at which time the C:\ is found and Windows XP Pro. 64 bit OS loads without any errors like nothing was ever wrong. What am I doing wrong here? I have never knowingly loaded any SATA drivers, are these required without RAID configuration? I donâ??t have any errors showing in Device Manager.     - x64 Won't load sigmatel drivers Ever since beta two my sigmatel high definition x64 drivers won't load. In fact, when I check Control Panel, Add Hardware, no sigmatel is even listed. I am running RC2 on a Gateway GM5048 with 2gb memory. Under Windows Xp the following drivers for audio are loaded: ATI unified AVstream driver Audio Codecs Legacy Audio drivers Legacy Video Capture devices Media control devices SigmaTel High Definiton Audio CODEC Unimodem half duplex audio device Video Codecs I would have thought the same would be loaded under Vixta x64 with the exception that Sigmatel high definition audio codec x64 would have been loaded. Instead, only the following are loaded: ATI Unified AVStream Driver High Definition Audio Device. Audio works. However, when I check audio under control panel, no recording devices are present.     - Drive lettering Vista rc1 stole my "C:" drive letter, moving all my partitions one letter up. I had left "I:" partition for it (the last one), but it took hold of "C:". I installed now rc2 from within rc1, chose a fresh install and it did install on the last partition. But it still shows Vista rc1 as "C:".     - VPC 2007 beta is out VPC 2007 beta is now available for download on Microsoft Connect. Look for it under Available Connections. I am running it on XP Pro x64 (and Vista 5744 x64) now and installing Vista RC2. Installation is now very straightforward. The default vhd size is now 64GB for Vista. The default memory for Vista is 512MB so change that to 1024MB if you have the ram. The VPC 2007 emulated cd/dvd drive now supports a full 4.2GB dvd image file so just drop the .iso on the drive icon and go.     - Dare I triple boot? Okay, I've installed RC2 on a machine at home and one at work. Old P4s with half a gig of memory. Just playing around. Now I'd like to dual boot with XP at home on my new X2 machine, but lingering fears of angry phone calls from the missus ("Hey, this stupid machine you built isn't working right...") makes me wary. I just got another 15K SCSI drive and thought it might be a chance to add it to my work rig, which is XP / XP 64 bit. Then I could put RC2 on that and triple boot and really test it out. Charlie posted a link to his dual boot guide, but I can't find it. How well does 5744 play in a triple boot situation?     - Dual boot rc1 & rc2 After unsuccessfully tried to upgrade Vista x64 5600 to 5728 and/or 5744 I wonder if I can leave rc1 as it is and install rc2 on a separate partition. Problem is that upgrade fails in the last part of the last stage, either installing from a DVD or HD (both 5728 and 5744). Maybe there is some offending program/driver installed that doesn't allow me to complete the upgrade. Bottom line: Dual boot rc1&rc2, is it possible?     - XP x64 fails to fully Install Have two full versions of XP x64 (one M/S - other OEM) the results of changing HDs, during the last year or so, I have re-installed each version several times without conflicts. Today, when performing a "Clean" Install, suddenly receive same error message from each version: System can not start because -- \windows\system32\config\system -- is missing or corrupt, try using Repair Console from CD; tried R Console several times without success. Also, tried re-format and then re-installing several times, receive the same above message from each CD version. Additionally, have one full version XP Pro x86 CD that's been installed more than once and it refuses to Install with the exact same above error message.     - Install question Ok, I've downloaded the 64bit version twice now. The file name is vista_5600.16384.060829-2230_x64fre_client-lr1cxfre_en_dvd.iso, that is opened using WINRAR. When I open the file there is nothing in it. Just an empty folder and a read me note. What am I doing wrong? If I click on the properties for the winrar file it shows the correct file size of 3.59 Gig yet there is nothing in it when I extract it; just an empty folder. HELP!     - RC2 x64 Graphic Corruption ??? Beginning to wonder if it is just my setup or if others are experiencing this problem. Haven't seen too many if any people asking about this. I have an nVidia Quadro FX3400 we\256mb Beta 2, RC 1, RC 1+, and now RC 2 x64 versions have all had some degree of video corruption. If I install the 32 bit version no corruption. Mostly the corruption takes places within IE, but I have experienced it also in WMP, Windows Mail, Explorer, and the desktop on rare occasions, but not to the extent of IE. It seems to have lessen as the builds have matured but was hoping for better at this point considering I prefer to run x64.     - x64 Internet Connections Lost Hi All, We're running an x64 machine on a home network. It is networking just fine, we can share it's drives and so forth. We can also ping remote servers. We have, however, lost the internet connection (the other machines on the network connect just fine). The system runs a Cablevision Motorola Surfboard Cable Modem into a Netgear wireless router, but all of the machines are running through wired connections to the router. We have Windows Firewall disabled and run AVG Viruscan with Firewall for security. The problem (inability to connect to the internet) persists when we disable AVG firewall too. The loss of connectivity was progressive. Initially Firefox and Skype wouldn't connect, then AVG's update engine and windows update dropped out and finally internet explorer. Does anyone have a procedure for identifying the fault and rectifying it? Rebuilding the system is not really an option due to our dependence on this machine as the central hard drive for our network. Any help is appreciated!!! Thanks, Thomas.     - Nvidia RC1 driver (96.33) does not work under RC2 x64 The current Nvidia x64 drivers (96.33) do not work under RC2. You will lose all hardware acceleration (video, games, even Vista Aero). I did not test x86/32 bit. The builtin drivers work, but are not meant for 3d games of course, extremely poor performance. Choppy frame rates and graphic corruption in HL2 (at least). Now we are planning to provide our applications in Windows 64 bit platform, and from the Microsoft site we came to know that we have to recompile our applications/DLLs using the compilers available for Intel/amd processor architectures and code changes also will be required.     - Vista RC1 64 bit reboots after sitting My system ,thanks to this news group, I have been a quite viewer for a long time. 2 plus years through the public preview of xp 64 My system is dual opterons a tyan 2885 mother board and 4 gigs of memory. It is tri booting windows xp pro 32 bit xp 64 and vista 64 with help from here and vistabootpro. their boot loader works. ok for the problem. xp 32 is great tough to crash drivers exist. everything works xp 64 will not crash but no drivers for scanners from microtek and Nikon. vista runs beautifully and stays running as long as I stay with it. if I leave it it reboots after about 15 minutes power options are set to not to turn off there is no screen saver set where else do I need to look there are no error messages in the logs? am I even looking in the correct place?     - networking problems can't connect to the internet. Was connected to a Linksys wired router in my old apt, but moved to a new apt. I installed the wireless card that came with the mobo fine during the move, used it till i got here, then tried using the wired LAN port on my new router and it says "connected, firewalled" but no internet. Also happens connected directly to modem. Tried resetting both router and modem to no avail, but other computer works fine when connected to either. Something needs to be reset in windows maybe?     - 32 bit app looking at registry on x64 I have an app that looks for specific registry keys. It knows where the keys are. It knows where to look in the 64 bit registry. It knows where to look whether it is in the wow6432 branch or the main (64 bit) branch. The app runs locally for information on the machine it is running. It looks remotely for the same data on remote machines. The app is a 32 bit app. All mentions of 64 mean x64, not Itanium. Running on the local machine for local machine info If looking at the local machine it works fine under all 32 bit oses. If running on a 64 bit OS it works fine some of the time but the reflector comes in and takes me places I did want to be looking at. I think I can deal with the local lookup using KEY_WOW64_32KEY and KEY_WOW64_64KEY as appropriate wih some code changes Running on one machine doing remote lookup The remote works fine from a 32 bit OS looking at 32 bit OSes The remote works fine from a 64 bit OS looking at 32 bit OSes (from the little testing I have done) The issues I am trying to deal with have to do with remotely looking at a 64 bit OS from a 32 bit OS and looking at a 64 bit OS from A 64 bit OS (have not tried the 64 to 64 yet) It looks like the KEY_WOW64_32KEY and KEY_WOW64_64KEY do not have an effect looking at the remote reg of a 64 from a 32 bit app running on a 32 but machine. It looks like the only view I get is of the 32 bit portion of the registry. These results are from an XP SP2 machine going to a Windows Server 2003 SP1 machine. This documentation confuses seems to lead me to believe the actions I take also will depend on what SP level is on the target machine. RRemote Registry Access in 64-bit Windows The registry on a 64-bit Windows system can be accessed and viewed remotely from a 32-bit or 64-bit Windows system across a network. In Windows Server 2003 and all prior 64-bit Windows versions, the 64-bit view of the registry is the only view that is exposed to a remote client. However, Windows Server 2003 SP1 and later, and the 64-bit versions of Windows XP are different, and expose the 32-bit view of registry if it detects that the remote client is 32-bit. Otherwise, it would provide the 64-bit view of the system registry. I guess the real question I am trying to ask is: Is it possible for an app to say - don't think for me - always use the native view of the machine being looked at (local or remote). For this to make sense for me it needs to be able to say that whether the app ius running on a 32 or 64 and the target is 32 or 64 . Thanks for any help. Have you run the System File Checker to repair corrupt or missing system
files? If not, at a command prompt run:

sfc /scannow
