Charlie:
I know that dual booting isn't recommended with Vista and XP because of the
volsnap.sys conflict. There are two ways to avoid the issue; 1) use a third
party boot manager to hide the operating systems from each other, 2)
BitLocker which is only available with Enterprise and Ultimate editions. I
haven't tried a boot manager, but I use BitLocker. Following the BitLocker
step-by-step guide found at
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsvista/aa905089.aspx works with or
without a functioning TPM chip on the motherboard. There is a new tool to
setup BitLocker but I haven't tried it yet.
After hearing about toasting hard drives because of using BitLocker, I did a
test. With a 80Gb hard drive with 4 partitions, size or number of partitions
doesn't matter, 1 partition encrypted using BitLocker. Booted from the Vista
DVD, 4 partitions were listed, the BitLocker encrypted partition couldn't be
used or formatted. Deleting the partition, creating a new partition then
formatting it made the partition usable again. Using Acronis to create a
backup of Vista running on a BitLocker encrypted partition to a different
hard drive. The backup files are readable from Vista or XP x64 but the VSS
files are gone. BitLocker is a good tool but will lead to data loss if not
used properly. Have a great day.
