New problem. Yesterday MP3's would play with any player I have. Today they
won't play on any player. Volume meter shows rises and falls in volume so
it would appear that it is reading the files properly, but no sound to the
sound card. Convert the mp3 to wav files and they play on any player.
Uninstalled and installed newer codec files. No change. Unfortunately there
was an update applied between yesterday and today and the Restore Point
won't work, as won't the next previous one which was installing the Word PDF
converter. Before I go back to where the Network problem was fixed, I
thought I would see if anyone here had any better ideas. So far in the 3
weeks I have had Vista64 Ultimate RTM installed it has been an unpleasant
experience. RC1 had no problems for me and is still working great on the
other computer. I also have Vista32 Home Premium to install on the wife's
computer, but think I will hold off until the RC1 dies end of May.

Haven't see it, John. They're all still playing just fine here. Though I
admit most of my music is .WMA, I still have some old ones that are MP3 and
they play just fine.

Even stranger if I download an mp3 (right click and save target as) or have
one sent to my computer from one of my subscriptions or use an mp3 CD, the
mp3 plays but there is no sound. If I chose open, where it downloads to a
temp file and opens, it plays just fine.
This just started happening, and I have no restore points that work, so it
is find someone with and idea that work or waste another day reinstalling.
Thanks for any ideas.

John,

I'm not running Vista but doesn't it have a "device manager" like XP? If it
does, you may want to check if the sound card driver is disabled or might
want to try to update the driver.

Just a guess. Good luck.

I have checked. There are no independent sound card drivers. All drivers
are Microsoft signed and delivered with Vista64.

John,

I cannot contribute with any immediate solution, I think, but if it does
play at other times this it not a driver or hardware problem - I would check
the mixer settings, and perhaps the file associations.

Some times the gear will not play with/without the [digital] property being
set/unset. This has a default, maybe one of the updates reversed your
preferences?

Well, this morning I tried my usb headphones with the mp3, and they work.
Somewhere in Vista64 there must be a place where you can associate a file
type with the output device. I know on XP (both 86 and 64) when I removed
the headphones, the sound would automatically switch back to the speakers.
This occurred whatever the sound source was, and was in no way related to
the file type. Also, the file associations section of Vista64 is harder to
find and less flexible than XP.

This being the case, that should probably make it a driver/subsystem issue
after all. I don't believe that to be an 'associating' issue.

I vaguely remember there is a place (no idea if it's Vista, XP or Linux)
where you can choose to have it automatically switch to/from the headphones,
it's just that usually that would be an option to kill the speaker if the
headphones are plugged in, not something that you would have to check to
have sound going to the speakers! I removed my Vista installation a while
ago, so cannot check! It may even have been a driver specific option? A
while back I was on Audigy drivers - now, it's SoundMax HD Audio.

It's begining to look like something has broken the driver/hardware hooks,
if your sound is motherboard implemented, I would contemplate simply running
the system CD on top of everything. (PCI driver/Sound driver)

(Hipshooting, as allways)

Re: MP3 problem by John

John

1. There are no sound drivers on the MOBO CD. All sound drivers are native
signed Microsoft HD Sound drivers from the Vista install
2. It only happens with MP3 files. No other file types have the same
characteristic. All other audio file types play normally. Either USB
headphones or speakers as selected in sounds, and switch from USB to
Speakers automatically when the USB headphones are removed.
I changed the file extension of one MP3 file to MP4 to see what would
happen, and it launched using the MP4 default player, but still had the MP3
problem with playback (USB only). Weird.

I'd go look to see if the OEM has some, then. Often they're available before

John:
I know you use K-Lite Codec pack.
Wanna give ffdshow (http://www.free-codecs.com/FFDShow_download.htm) a try
for decoding your mp3 files and see if that helps with your audio "routing"
problem?

Thanks Carlos. That was one of the many players I have tried. They play
thru the USB headphones, but will never switch to speakers. All other audio

This never appeared to have been resolved, and I have the same problem. I'm
using Vista Home Premium with WMP 11.0.6000. so on.

About five days ago, MP3 files simply stopped playing. Everything else will
play, be it avi or MIDI or what have you, but not MP3.

I think the problem might lie in the switching between headphone and regular
speakers. Does anyone have a solution that could be put into layman's terms?

Hold the phone, folks! I found something!

At the Advanced tab for my speaker properties, I at one point tried to see
what would happen if I increased the sound quality to 16bit, 96000 hertz.
Well, guess what! MP3s in WMP, for some reason, wouldn't play when that level
was selected! I reduced it down to 44100 hertz, and presto! The sound is back.

I suppose when it comes down to it, I do my best thinking when I'm a bit
less distraught...
