Storport drivers
Hi Team ,
We are using the Storport on windows 64 servers and we need to uninstall the
drivers for the changer and drive to make the scsi pass move thorugh it and
to make it work
But on 32 bit servers , we need to have the drive and changer enabled and
need to have drivers installed to make it work
coded 64bit Windows to only support Storport
With Windows 64bit the IBM tape drive driver always seems to create a
problem for ARCserve. Here is the difference between 64 and 32 bit Windows.
64bit â?? IBM tape drive driver causes problems
32bit â?? IBM tape drive driver does not.
So with 32bit it is possible to have the client load the driver, with 64bit
it is not.
The fact that IBM 64 bits drivers are unfortunately not transparent to scsi
pass through commands, we experienced it in several cases and also using
latest ones and latest storport.sys.
Is it supported to have a device detected in windows without associated OS
driver ?If no then it means there is no real 100% scsi pass through
anymore, and we are anyway dependent on a device driver â?¦if you say yes then
whatâ??s the official MS way to have a device detected and not
uninstalled/disabled but also to have the associated driver not running

When I choose Close Group in X64 it makes me manually open each window and

Is there anyway to change the behaviour so it pops up the next instance

This is O.T., but I just recieved my MSDN mail with a notice of upcoming
events that apparently includes a promotional kit, of which the VS would
interest me a great deal. Now, these kits being promotional - does that hold
any limitations appart from the standard 'non disclosure agreement' - or
whatever, could one expect to be allowed to publish software in various
ways, and for any lenght of time?
Not that I am thinking of being able to sell, or actually build a profitable

My first impressions - Vista 64 bit Ultimate
Hey gang,
Ok, so's I purchased Vista Ultimate 64 bit full retail version, and
installed on a new hard drive of it's own, to boot along with my current XP
Pro 32 bit install, to mainly play around with it.
With the exception of my previously mentioned problems of not getting a
choice upon startup which OS to boot into, have to use the bios boot menu to
choose the drive to boot from, installation went flawless. Got all my needed
drivers, and they installed just fine.
My system boots into XP Pro by default, which is really what I want for now,
and I can choose myself when to boot into Vista. My wife will not be using
Vista for now, so this scenario works pretty good.
Anyway, when I first started playing around with Vista Saturday afternoon, I
first thought, oh my gosh, what have I gotten myself into? It was so
different, and really was not sure I liked some of the differences and way
it was layed out.
Since then, I have spent some time with it, getting windows mail set up for
my newsgroups and email, getting a game installed that I really like, and
surprisingly it ran it very well, and just tinkering with it a bit.
I have to admit, the more I use it, the more I really like it. My system, is
fairly current by today's standards, and I am sure that has a lot to do with
it - Vista 64 seems to really be very robust on my hardware. I was hesitant
in purchasing Vista, mainly due to what I have read for the past year or so,
but for now I am pleasantly surprised. I knew when I did purchase it , it
would mainly be to finally get a 64 bit OS, and I am glad I did. I am
already finding myself wanting to boot into Vista more than into XP. I have
a long way to go before Vista might become my main OS, due to all my
critical things I have running on XP, but I can see at some point in the
future, it just might be. I am sure I will run across more things I like,
and am sure will run across more things I dislike, but I am impressed so
far.
Thanks to everyone so far, for their help, I am sure I will have more
questions as I go, but hopefully they will get fewer as time goes on.

Windows Vista SP1 Friendly Advice
I was one of the people who got SP1 for Vista x64 through Windows Update the
other day. The install went fine and my computer came back afterwards
without any trouble. However, in the days that followed, I noticed that one
of my Excel files was corrupted and I had to restore it from backup. I also
noticed that I had a USB hardware error in Device Manager and once while
installed Call of Duty 4, I had a BSOD. Also, I noticed that sometimes my
system would take a longer-than-usual time to read files from my second and
third hard drives.
I checked into it and came to the conclusion that my INF drivers were not
properly reinstalled during the SP1 changes. I have an intel P35 chipset.
I got the inf auto-installer, ran it with the command-line switch "-overall"
in order to force it to redo the drivers, and it seems like everything is
back to normal.
I just hope maybe this helps someone else out there who has these problems
too.

Vista Defrag
Hey gang,
Have been messing around with Vista 64 bit Ultimate since getting installed
yesterday to dual boot with XP Pro. Parts of it are pretty neat, parts will
take me some getting used to.
I use Executive Software Diskeeper, in my XP Pro install. I can use it to
defrage the drive my Vista install is on as well.
I am curious about the Vista built in defragger, when I go into " computer",
and right click a hard drive, click on tools, then defrag, it states it is
defragging " disks " , ie plural.
Is it defragging just the drive I selected, or is it defragging all my
partitions?

Convert new HP 32bit Vista home premium to Vista 64bit Ultimate
I just bought a new HP a6350z AMD dual-core computer with 32bit Vista Home
Premium. I own a full retail license for Ultimate which is installed on an
older computer. I plan to remove it (or whatever's necessary to free the
license) so I can install the 64bit ultimate license on the new HP.
How disruptive is that? The new computer is almost unchanged from getting it
out of the box. I uninstalled Symantec AV and installed Windows OneCare for
which I already have a license. I installed the driver for my wireless HP
AIO c7820 which HP describes as being compatible with Vista 64. Not much
else is personalized and I haven't invested much time in it.
Am I basically starting from scratch? Or will existing programs that are
compatible simply work after the 64bit installation?
Thanks in advance for your time.

Installed Vista dual boot, think I screwed up!
Hey gang,
I think I have messed up here. I just installed 64 bit Vista Ultimate,
retail full version, in what I thought was a dual boot environment.
I added a new sata hard drive, and installed Vista on it.
Now, I do not get an option when I boot to choose wich OS to boot to, it
only boots into Vista.
Under Vista, it shows as my C drive, I see the partion on the other hard
drive my XP Pro is on, however under Vista it shows as drive E?
Dangit, I thought I had read enough to know what I was doing here, but
apparently I did something I should not have.
I would sure appreciate any help here, my XP Pro is my main OS and I
desperately need to be able to get back to it.

Setting up Vista Ultimate 64 bit do dual boot with XP Pro 32 bit
Hey gang,
I have just received Vista Ultimate, along with a new hard drive to put it
on, to dual boot with my current XP Pro 32 bit. I did a google search to try
and do some reading on this.
I have read , of an issue with restore points being deleted with this
configuration, but believe there is a way to edit the boot file to keep this
from happening?
I have also read there is a program, Vista BootPro, that would be good to
use for this, rather than the built in Vista boot manager?
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

XP 64 and Audio Issues
Hope someone can help.
On my new system I have a problem with audio distortion under XP64. I set up
a dual boot with XP 32 and I
don't have any problems with the audio on that OS. The device manufacturer
says that there are no driver
issues and they have been thoroughly tested under XP64 and Vista64.
Microsoft won't help with the problem and I'm running out of time before
getting hardware replacements.
One of those deals where everyone is pointing at someone else.
One other thing I noticed under XP64 is that when it's detecting a device
that's been added, or anything
plugged into the USB or Firewire port, the mouse freezes or operates
erratically until it's done working in the
background. I didn't think that going 64 bit meant ending multitasking so I
thought this behaviour to be strange.
The IRQ's are assigned almost identical to the XP32 OS on the same machine
and that behaviour is not
showing up on that OS.
I have 8 GB ram so I really want the 64 Bit OS to work and I've heard horror
stories relating to Vista 64 and
performance issues when dealing with audio/video work compared to XP.
Any help or direction would sure be appreciated. I'm running the trial
version of XP64 with SP2 and all updates.
I need to try and get this resolved to decide if I'm going to purchase XP64
or start returning hardware.

Green Computing - Where do you stand?
Microsoft has admitted that Windows Vista service pack one (SP1) renders
useless a number of well-known third party security products.
Redmond said in a knowledge base article yesterday that due to
"reliability" issues with Vista SP1, it has been forced to prevent some
security products from running after the service pack is installed.
So, customers who currently have versions of Jiangmin KV Antivirus or
Trend Micro's Internet Security on their Vista computers will no longer
be able to use the software, which are suppose to safeguard their
machines against hackers and malware, after SP1 is installed.
The two other security products deemed by Microsoft to make Vista SP1
"unreliable" are versions of BitDefender AV and Zone Alarm Security Suite.
It added that it has put a block on Fujitsu's Shock Sensor utility,
which protects laptop hard-drives against sudden shocks.
Microsoft also pinpointed a number of products that simply won't work
after the service pack, which is expected to be available for download
to everyone by the middle of next month, has been installed.
Versions of Iron Speed Designer, Xheo Licensing, and Free Allegiance
software are on that particular blacklist.
Meanwhile, Novell's ZCM Agent and the New York Times reader software are
among the products listed as having severely reduced functionality post
Vista-SP1.
Microsoft said in the article: "A program may experience a loss of
functionality after you install Windows Vista SP1. However, most
programs will continue to work as expected after you install Windows
Vista SP1."
This latest embarrassing cock-up comes just days after Microsoft
snatched back a key pre-requisite update for Vista SP1 from its Windows
Update website.
It was forced to suspend distribution of its servicing stack KB937287
update after customers complained that their PCs wouldn't boot up
properly once it had been applied. ® Tag: msscript.ocx dosen't work in x64 Tag: 56471

Vista slower than XP
February 20, 2008
Despite SP1, Vista is still slower than XP
Filed under: Hardware , Productivity , Windows Vista
So here I am, sitting in the main terminal at Dubai International,
killing time during my six hour layover by sifting through the headlines
surrounding the release Vista SP1. Over at a competitor's site, two
prominent bloggers are really going at it, posting contradictory
benchmark results that show Vista to be either a) on par with Windows XP
or b) much slower than XP on the same hardware.
In each case, the bloggers are focusing on areas in which Microsoft
claims to have improved Vista performance with SP1: file copies, network
transfers, etc. However, neither author seems be paying attention to the
myriad other areas -- productivity applications, services, multimedia
tasks -- where Vista is an absolute dog compared to Windows XP.
Did they not read my previous postings on the subject? I made it pretty
clear last year that Vista was struggling big time vs. XP on comparable
hardware, and that SP1 would be no panacea.
It's like the Microsoft PR machine flipped a switch somewhere and
instantly reframed the entire discussion of Vista performance around
just those areas it improved on in SP1.
News flash, people: File copying is the least of the problems affecting
Windows Vista. Test after test shows that the new OS is a performance
slug across the board.
Even when you disable all of the bells and whistles (Aero, Search) and
turn-off every conceivable background service (Superfetch, ReadyBoost,
etc) -- in other words, strip it down to something comparable to XP in
terms of underlying OS footprint -- Vista is still a good 40 percent
slower than XP on a variety of basic productivity tasks.
The only solution to this generalized performance malaise is to throw
hardware at it: Vista performs quite tolerably on state-of-the-art
hardware. Unfortunately for Microsoft, so does XP SP3. In fact, it
absolutely screams on today's high-end, multi-core desktops and laptops,
which puts customers in the position of having to choose between
functionality and raw performance.
In conclusion: Don't be confused by all of these headline-grabbing
"performance tests." They're focusing almost exclusively on areas that
Microsoft tweaked with SP1. The fact remains that Vista will always
require roughly 2X the hardware performance to deliver an end-user
experience on par with Windows XP.
And when you finally do give in and buy that new "Designed for Vista"
PC, do yourself a favor and provision yourself a small XP partition,
just as an experiment. Don't settle for Vista until you've seen how much
performance you're trading for that shiny new UI and whatever other
bells and whistles you find so irresistible. You may be surprise at just
how fast your new PC really is - once it's no longer encumbered by the
bloat and sluggishness of "Windows 6.x." Tag: msscript.ocx dosen't work in x64 Tag: 56403

Microsoft pulls Vista update
By INQUIRER Newsdesk: Wednesday, 20 February 2008, 6:57 PM
AFTER AN UPDATE to Vista sent some PCs bananas, Microsoft pulled it,
although it hasn't yet produced code to fix those bananas PCs.
"Immediately after receiving reports of this error, we made the decision
to temporarily suspend automatic distribution of the update to avoid
further customer impact while we investigate possible causes," said
Volish Vista bogger Nick White, yesterday.
White said the bananas PCs belonged to "a small number of customers in
unique circumstances".
He added: "We are working to identify possible solutions and will make
the update available again shortly after we address the issue."
The update number 937287 is designed as a prelude to Vista Service Pack
1 (SP1). Unfortunately, it sent some PCs into an eternal cycle of
reboots that only ceased when the plug was pulled.
Whether the balls-up will delay SP1 is unclear. You'd have to say it
doesn't look good, however. µ Tag: msscript.ocx dosen't work in x64 Tag: 56402

DELL HAPPILY ANNOUNCED a new Ubuntu-powered system a couple of days ago.
The penguin posse was delighted, of course, until it found that the

the open source OS than for those sporting Vista.
As far as we can tell, on Dell's cumbersome UK website the price of the
cheapest Inspiron 1525 with Vista home premium is £359.
The same specification machine with Ubuntu is £379.
There is a cheaper version of the Ubuntu system but it has a lower

Vistax64 not connecting automatically to internet via yukon 88e800
I have an Asus A8V with an integrated Marvell Yukon 88E8001/8003/8010 PCI
Gigabit Ethernet Controller. This card will not connect to the internet no
matter what kind of drivers I use when I was using Linksys routers. Last
week, I connected it to an Westell DSL modem and I was shocked to connect to
the internet ( the wireless dongle that I used for over a year to access the
internet vanished and my kids could not tell me why).
The problem is that after rebooting Vista Ultimate 64 bit, the computer
will not connect to the internet again unless I roll back the drivers or
update the drivers for the ethernet controller. it seems that the computer
does not remember to keep the working settings and initialize the ethernet
card to access the internet after booting up. Using a different ethernet card
requires the same "rolling back or updadating again; the current drivers.
I never have to do that when I was using the USB 2.0 wireless adapter. At
boot up, the computer would always connct automatically thru the wireless
network.
My question is: how do I get Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit to remember the
working settings after I reboot so that I don;t always have to perform a
rollback or an updating of drivers?

reinstall that without having to wipe out all my programs, files, etc. I
have already tried system restores and "start" restores (or whatever that
tool is called in the recovery console. Tag: msscript.ocx dosen't work in x64 Tag: 56367
x64 Windows Updates
Is it possible to install x86 updates on an x64 version of Windows Vista?
I ask because I tried using Office Live Workspace today and it installed
three hotfixes during its installation. These hotfixes did not specify that
they were for x64 systems in their title, so it made me nervous.
Does anyone know?
Thanks,

Back to multi-booting the RAID - again. . .
Over the years, I've kept my multi-boot configurations in a fairly short
leash and they've come and gone with regularity. When I set up the present
64bit system, I wanted a RAID and I wanted to keep it reasonably clean with
just the XP x64 and one Linux (to keep abreast with RAID support on Linux).
Things got complicated when several of the simulators I depend on turned out
to install, but not run in a 64bit environment and soon I fell back to
spinal reactions and I had three systems booting on that RAID. All was well
and completely uneventful for the last couple of years, but RAID support on
Linux is closely attached to the Uncertainty Principle (unless you want
Software RAID), and I didn't feel I could depend on the frequent updates to
'slip in there' in the seemless fashion you'd like for a workhorse
production system. So, Linux was elbow'ed out of there, but I kept the Grub
boot manager hanging around out of sentimentality.
Then, updates took care of the simulators one-by-one, and I was in a
situation where I could see myself having most everything installed in one
single system on that RAID. Since the simulators are of the Racing kind, I
needed something else beyond the Joystick, and I bought a very expensive
Racing Wheel Controler, and even that had 64bit drivers and all was as
'honky-dorey' as can be.
I removed the 32bit XP system, and I felt that Grub wasn't making much sense
any longer so I inserted the 64bit XP system DVD and ran FIXMBR. Before
removing Grub, but after removing XP, I had installed everything onto XP 64
and all went well, the Simulators started up fine, and the Controler was
functioning and calibrated on the system, but then setting it up promptly
crashed one of the games. I re-installed several times without any luck. The
controler runs fine - the Simulators run fine and there is no trouble
configuring the Controler in the one game, but it is crashing the other.
This is the point where you'd like to rip off an arm, or something, because
I was absolutely sure that running the 64bit FIXMBR tool would preserve the
bootsector for that system. This is like having a zoo of perfectly well
trained and dependable Lions, Tigers, Bears and Seals and you wake up
wondering: "Where is the zoo?"
O.K. - So I wade through the XP DVD looking for the Boot Config files, but I
can only find NTLDR and NTDETECT. There has to be one or two more, surely?
Worse, there is absolutely nothing on the XP 64 partition root directory,
except some HP *.DLL that belongs to the printer.
So, I'm back to square one, more or less. I re-installed XP Home to it's old
partition and it boots and I can access everything from there, but I need to
restore the XP 64 boot option. I have lost count of how many times John
(Barnes) has suggested people to make a copy of those files, and I honestly
believed I had them stowed away somewhere, but where?
Apparently, the complexity of having a multi-boot configuration on a RAID
hasn't quite hit home with me yet. I was certain that the boot-sector was
still inhabiting a well defined physical domain on the first HD, but it now
seems as though there is no knowledge maintained of what goes where outside
of some mathematical algorithm.
Please, I have some chestnuts in the fire - if I can somehow save myself the
trouble of the 'Repair Install', I'd appreciate a 'rake' right now!

Ext HD triggers new hardware, drivers not loaded
I have had recent problems installing external hd's on Vista 64. I have
run into problems with USB2.0 as well as eSATA. The drive will appear
under the device manager under "disk drives". But it triggers the new
harware wizard, which can't load a driver, which leads to an unknown device
being listed. Even when the unknown device is listed the drive still
appears under "disk drives". The drive wil appear under disk manager, but
it is unaccesable. You can remove the partition but can not change the
drive letters or format. Drive manager has a message asking to refresh or
restart which has no effect.
The drive works fine under XP. Xp recognizes the drive and loads it right
up. I had the same exact problem with the usb drive. I went through all
of the usbstor files solutions and deleted the infcache file and finally got
the usb drive working. No such luck with the eSATA drive. I have tried
to point the wizard to the windows32\drivers folder with no luck. I have
tried to update the driver manually through the properties dialog box and it
starts to update and then says an error occured and the drivers could not be
loaded. What is the problem with Vista64. If XP does such a great job
recognizing the drive why the problems with Vista.
I will addd that I have a dual boot machine XP/Vista64, so it is not a
hardware problem with the computer.

4gb Ram 64 bit Vista

How to achieve actual use of my full 4 GB RAM,
and not be hornswoggled by Vista SP1 (32bit)?
My Vista Home Premium 32bit reports just 3 GB RAM while I have 4.
Microsoft claims that Vista SP1 (32bit) will report the full amount of RAM
present, 4 GB in my case.
But if I understand correctly, Vista SP1 will actually keep on using only 3
GB RAM minus the graphic card's memory.
This means that Vista Home Premium SP1 (32bit) on my portable will still use
only 2.5 GB RAM, because the graphic card has its own dedicated 512 MB.
That's 1.5 GB RAM just sitting there idle.
The solution would be to install Vista 64bit. But ...
1. Can my x86 CPU handle that?
(Packard Bell Easynote
http://support.packardbell.com/global/item...p;pn=pb93q034a7 with an Intel
Core 2 Duo T7700 @ 2.40GHz)
2. I have to be able to run two old DOS applications (NOT games), but Vista
64bit does not have NTVDM (NT Virtual DOS Machine) and therefore doesn't run
DOS software.
OTOH DOSBox 0.72 does work in Vista 32bit and claims to work in Vista 64bit
too. This might allow me to run my 2 DOS applications in Vista 64bit.
Does anybody have experience with this setup: Vista 64bit + DOSBox + DOS
application software?
3. I might have another option. Is it possible to dual boot Vista 32bit and
Vista 64bit? If installed on their own separate hard disks (I have 2), I'm
almost sure it is possible, but I would like confirmation.
Before installing (or trying to install) Vista 64bit, I would first like to
make sure it would not be a big waste of time (and money).
Thanks for any thoughts.

Transfer License from 32-bit to 64-bit?
I have a PC running Windows XP 32-bit. Separately, I have a 6-month
evaluation version of Windows XP x64 waiting to be installed on a new 64-bit
computer. I know the license key from the 32-bit version cannot be used on
the 64-bit version.
Is there a way (with Microsoft's permission) to deactivate the license from
my old 32-bit version and transfer it to the newer 64-bit version without
having to purchase a new license? If so, whom do I contact to make this
happen?
Thank you.
