    - dual dvi problems I had a 64bit XP pro computer built recently by a local vendor. I ordered an ati x1650 512 MB video card-per his recommendation. When he setup this at our site, he had been using vga adaptors. I asked him why it cant run as straight DVI and he said the drivers were not available for 64bit - Well I think thats a bunch of crap.     - Windows Live Mail Are we gonna get to use Live Mail in XP-64? It won't install, but it will run if I reach over and run it from my XP-32 on the other partition. However, I just get the message headers, not the text of the message. It's a great program, but I want it on XP-64!!!     - Intel 82801HR/HH/HO Sata raid controller causing reboots Good evening, i dont know if this is the place to ask this question... but i have scoured google for the last day or so for answers but i cant seem to be able to find the answers i need. I have a system which i have decided to put vista ultimate 64-bit edition and the system is running 2 x western digital WD5000AAKS 500gb Sata drives. Everything seemed fine at first, but i noticed recently that the disks appear to be stopping every 3 to 4 hours and rebooting the system. When the system comes back up, it attempts to report the error however cant find a solution to it. It is a blue screen error and an error code of 9f.     - VIsta 64 and Photoshop CS3 Help, before upgrading to Vista 64 I backed up all my .psd's to a remvable hardrive. Now when I try to access those files Photoshop is directing me to go to Windows and change permissions. I have done what I think is correct but when I go back I get the same message.     - srvcomment disappeared from Registry There was a registry entry in good old windows where the network comment was readable in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SYSTEM\ CurrentControlSet\ Services\ LanmanServer\ Parameters\ srvcomment Now this entry has been removed from the registry - at least it seems so. Do I really have to use other network api functions to retrieve this information? I would like to stick to the capabilities of our inventory solution which means registry retrieval.     - Running 32 bit .NET programs on 64 bit Vista Hi, If I installed 64 bit Vista on a pc with 8GB RAM, do 32 bit programs have access to the additional RAM over 3GB (or is it 4GB 32bit programs are limited to?). For example, on a pc with 8GB physical RAM, say one 32bit program use 2GB RAM, if Vista has already used 4GB ram, does the 32bit program use the next lot of 2GB as though it is the first lot of 2GB or is it simply unable to address the memory? If this is unclear, I'll put it another way. If I have 6 x 32bit programs each using say 1GB of RAM on Vista x64, does the operating system assign each 32bit program 1GB RAM and handle any memory address issues? I guess being 32bit they're not actually capable of addressing memory over 4GB or so? Or are all 32bit programs limited to the first 3 or 4 GB RAM on Vista x64?     - SP2 install does not complete: Please help So I made new install of WinXP 64 Edition, instaled some programs, updates, a game and then Service Pack 2 wich installed but not comletly. It went all fine till my sistem come back from the reboot. Then the MSI fails and this error aperes: ---------Installer Information Thw Windows Instaler Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support peronnel for assistance. -------- This hapends every time I boot. I reinstalled SP2, and followed the step by step on http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315353 (my setings where alredy as they wonted me to set them). It did not help.     - Vista x64 excessive HDD loading at startup @ System unresponsive My Vista x64 SP1 (got it from Connect) build currently boots up to the desktop and then loads for 30-40mins (with the sidebar, and other startup programmes coming up gradually very very slowly), before becoming responsive. You can move the mouse but clicking on anything will be very very very slow. Before last night, it would take less than 30 seconds! All this happened after installing a new Heatsink (Xigmatek Red Scorpion, great performer btw). Confirmed it's not a faulty install/cpu problem as a dual boot to XP works fine. On first boot, the XP installation did say the Vista drive (hooked on a SATA port, XP is IDE) had to be checked for consistency, and passed all 3 stages. It did however fix some USN Journals or something. At first i thought the SATA drive got fubared somehow, but diagnostics on the drive (Seatools) from the XP install proved otherwise. I can also browse and use files from the SATA disk while in XP (i played a movie clip and opened up some documents). Safe mode stops at crcdisk.sys, before loading 20-30 minutes and then rebooting (also a common problem judging form the hits on Google). I haven't tried booting into safe mode again, since it does boot normally although as mentioned, takes 30-40 minutes before becoming responsive. Booting off from the SP1 CD and choosing Startup Repair doesn't work (it says no boot problems detected). 1. Short of formatting and re-installing Vista x64, any ideas on what to look for ? I might try re-installing over the existing Vista if it's recommended. 2. Any way for me to copy my documents from the Vista drive to another drive from within XP ? (besides of course going in Vista, wait 40 minutes and then hopefully be able to copy). Currently it says I have no permission to access the folder.     - Solid State drives under 64 bit Vista I run a Tyan Tomcat K8E MB Opteron 180 dual core 4 gig of rammand two WD harddrives. Operating system is Vista Home Premium 64 bit. I tried to install a solid state drive which seemed to be recognised by by the bios but when Vista started the SSD didn't show up under My Computer. I then tried two SSD's in a raid they were recognised by the bios in the raid section of bios. Once again when Vista started they didn't appear. To my mind it has to be a Vista problem. I purchased a RETAIL/UPGRADE version of Vista Ultimate, cost was around $250.00. That purchase gave me 2 DVD's: A. Vista Ultimate in 32-Bit - UPGRADE Version B. Vista Ultimate in 64-Bit - UPGRADE Version C. I purchased the Upgrade about 6-8 months ago. The only thing I have are the DVD's and a Quick Start Guide in Booklet format. 3. I used the Vista Ultimate to Upgrade the PC I had then, which was using XP Pro. 4. That PC is no longer alive, kicked the bucket about 2 weeks ago, but had a good 5 year life! 5. I have loaded VU, Retail/Upgrade 32-Bit version over the OEM VHP. I want to get VU 64-Bit on this new PC. Utilizing the Retail/Upgrade 64-Bit DVD which came with the Retail/Upgrade package. 6.     - NTFS uses least used clusters ? (Cluster durability/lifetime ?) Hello, Somebody believes NTFS works as follows: When NTFS needs to write new data to the disk it finds the clusters which have been least used. This would ensure longer disk life. If NTFS simply re-used the same clusters over and over and over again this would lead to early drive failure (???). Is there any thruth in this or is this internet/usenet myth ? Me wonders... (It does so via a list of clusters somebody said.) (Freeed clusters would be added to the back of the list) (Needed clusters would be removed from the front of the list) Thus this would automatically cycle the clusters somewhat. Sounds plausible.     - System queued Windows Error Reporting Hi all: I have a Vista Ultimate x64 home-built pc that I am very pleased with but have a question about a continual massive build up of "windows error reports". When I select "disk clean-up" it reports large amounts of space used. For instance.....I installed a program to keep track of the hard drives SMART data and after the install Windows reported it may not have installed right. I clicked it did. I then used the program for a couple of days and when I checked in Disk cleanup it reported 275 MBs of space used for "error reporting". Since that hadn't happened before, I uninstalled the program and cleaned up the wasted space with Disk Cleanup. I don't understand how that much space could be used for error reporting. When I checked in system information under software for Windows error reporting there were only 4 entries, none regarding the "problem program" and all dated prior to the installation of that hardware. Has anyone else noted large amounts of "system queued Window Error Reporting..." when they used Disk Cleanup? My errors are usually caused by trying to open a program before Windows has completely loaded after a re-boot or shutdown. It's hard to tell when Windows is really "done" loading......there is no spinning circle or indication that it isn't quite ready for hard work! (Like connecting to the internet or opening live tv in Media Center). Anyway.......there seems to be something wrong with Vista if it can store that many MBs of reports when it detects and error. You could fill up a hard drive pretty fast if you never used disk cleanup? Is my case unique or have others noticed a build up of "Error Reports"? Right now, after cleaning up "error reports and re-starting, I have 3.23 MBs of reports stored and everything seems to be working fine!     - sound Hello, I just have a pair of cheap speakers and am using the onboard sound. This will be a sound tweaking question. In preview, how do I get the sound to work across players? Video has been affected. When I started playing media files and movies, Media Player worked great. I then tried to play a few files I'd downloaded, and Media Player wouldn't play, I got some codecs, and also got a couple more players, namely Divx and GOM. GOM seems to play video more evenly, but the sound is cheaper than it should be. DIVX plays its own files better, and has the best sound. Unfortunately, they seem to have taken Media Player down a peg, and the video stutters. I'd like to see the best of all worlds, good video and good sound. At this point, I'm looking for consistant sound, or a way to fix Media Player. I can provide details on hardware if needed. - or go over to Media Center if that's more appropriate.     - USB hell I recently decided to take a bold leap and upgraded my Vista 32 bit to a 64 bit machine. Th efirst day everything worked beautifully. I downloaded the latest Nforce drivers, creative drivers, and ATI drivers, most of my hardware installed automatically. Now whenever i try to install a USB device such as a simple USB drive, it recognizes a new hardware has been plugged in it tries to install it automatically but it fails!!! The same thing happens when i try to attached a USB hub it tries to install it but fails. Pretty much and usb device i try to intall dose not work. i am using a USB bluetooth keyboard that works great, a USB printer that works great but any new USB device fails to install. Ask the experts and your peers at The Register Security Debate, April 17, 2008 I blogged a while back on how a Vista upgrade effectively rendered my old desktop machine useless for business purposes (see Retiring Leonardo from last year). I got a lot of feedback at that time as many people out there were obviously trying to get a handle on the viability of upgrading older kit. While this debate continues, the related question has now arisen of whether even some PCs pre-installed with Vista are capable of running it adequately. Based on my own experience, this is a very pertinent question to ask if you are considering buying anything with less than a 1.8 Ghz Core2 Duo processor with 2Gb of memory - the current minimum spec I work on for serious business use. Yet there are lots of Vista machines out there on the market that are significantly less powerful than this. Without getting into the rights or wrongs of this state of affairs, if you are unlucky enough to be struggling with Vista on a lower spec machine, you may be interested in a recent experience I had which was a bit of a wakeup call â?? not just in terms of the physical performance side of things, but also on the broader question of the value of Vista from an end user perspective in a business environment. A few months ago, I needed to replace my notebook. As a notebook to me is companion to my desktop rather than my main machine, I wasnâ??t looking for anything very powerful â?? size, weight and battery life were much more important considerations. So, after a happy couple of hours cruising up and down all of the hi-tech shops in Londonâ??s Tottenham Court Road trying all the latest kit, I opted for a Sony TZ Series â?? about 1.2 kilos in weight, fantastic screen, reduced size but really nice keyboard, embedded cellular modem, and lots of other good stuff. The machine came with Windows Vista Business Edition pre-installed and when I was playing with it in the shop, it was pretty responsive â?? the 1.2Gz Core2 Duo processor seemed to be up to the job. When I got the machine back to the ranch and loaded everything onto it, though, I have to admit to being a little disappointed with speed. Nevertheless, it was good enough, so I just got on with using it. Over the course of the next four months, however, the performance gradually degraded and the user experience became awful. It eventually got to the stage where it was talking 12 minutes to boot and about 6-7 minutes to shut down, with very sluggish performance in between and frequent hangs requiring a forced shutdown (which in itself was probably making matters worse). When researching the problem on the Web, it was clear that I was not the only one to be experiencing issues with Vista on the TZ Series, and the more I read, the more the answer to my problems became obvious â?? â??downgradeâ?? the machine to Windows XP. A few forum entries mentioned a kit on the Sony website designed to allow you to do this, with all of the relevant drivers and utilities, and a set of instructions to guide you through the process. I duly downloaded this, followed the instructions, and it just worked. The longest part was installing and patching XP itself (which you have to buy separately, by the way â?? your Vista licence doesnâ??t cover it*). The end result is fantastic. The word â??downgradeâ?? seems totally inappropriate â?? in fact, it feels like the machine has gone through a significant upgrade. It now boots in well under two minutes (with all the same applications loaded as before), is highly resilient (has gone through a lot of sleep/wake cycles without crashing once) and, interestingly, many of the Sony utilities work much more naturally (I suspect they were designed for XP in the first place then ported to Vista). The one thing I was a bit worried about was going back to XP from a usability and functionality perspective having got so used to Vista, but I was surprised to find that the experience was actually quite a positive one. Everything seemed more crisp, immediate and uncluttered and so far, the only thing I have missed is the enhanced application switching mechanism in Vista, i.e. the Alt-Tab and Windows-Tab functionality. Thatâ??s a minor sacrifice for the other benefits, though, and it only took me an hour or two to get used to the old mechanism again. The switch back to XP was such a breath of fresh air that I have also â??downgradedâ?? the desktop machine I am using at the moment. On a reasonable spec PC you donâ??t see the same increase in actual performance, but the XP interface still feels a lot cleaner and snappier (at least to me). Having both machines running the same OS obviously has its advantages too. Now before everyone goes rushing out to downgrade their Vista machines based on this little story, it would be irresponsible of me not to point out that during my research, I read accounts from many happy Vista users, lots of which seemed to be getting on fine with the TZ and similarly specâ??d machines. I would suspect the number and range of applications you work with has a bearing on this - remember I said that the TZ felt fine when I was just playing with OS with no applications installed before buying it. It could also, of course, be that people just accept the out-of-the-box experience as normal and donâ??t really question whether they are getting the best performance from their hardware. All I can say is that the downgrade was definitely the right thing for me, and is something to consider if you find yourself in a similar situation. In the meantime, we continue to experiment with various desktop options here at Freeform Dynamics, and those looking at alternatives may be interested a post from my colleague Jon Collins entitled Why Iâ??ve replaced Vista with Linux. Finally, as I type this, I have a brand new MacBook sitting next to me here on my desk, and over the coming few weeks I am going to be looking at the practicalities of using the Mac in a Windows-dominated mainstream business environment, so watch this space for experiences with that. Benchmarketing carried out by Percy Cabello, who posted his results on the Mozilla Links blog, show that that Firefox 3.0 Beta 4 is 53 per cent faster than Opera 9.5 beta, twice as fast as Safari and three times faster than IE7. The tests use the SunSpider benchmark, which looks at JavaScript performance. A big cheese at the Mozzarella Foundation was quick to say it was all down to superior engineering. However he did admit that benchmarking was a bit of a mirage because browsers are not alike when rendering basic Web pages.     - Remote Assistance Stopped Working I have Vista 64Bit Dual boot with Windows XP 32Bit 4GB RAM - Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 I have previously been able to use Remote Assistance. Did so to a Vista box via Windows Live Messenger about 2 weeks ago. I am now experiencing an issue. I have tried connecting to both XP and Vista systems. Tried initiating through Messenger both Live and previous, as well as by invitation. Others can provide assistance to me however I cannot to others. Remote Assistance does not error out. Task Manager shows msra.exe started in the Processes tab. No CPU useage but Memory usage.     - CPU/Motherboard Upgrade I have been running XP-64 for two years. It is far and away the best version of Windows I have used. It's rock solid and responsive. I'd like to upgrade to a dual-core CPU and new motherboard, but I have tons of software installed on my current machine, and I don't want to spend three days upgrading. What's the quickest and safest way to do so? I could just rebuild my system, including the current hard drive as-is, turn on the power and hope for the best.     - New Computer I have just bought a quad core computer with Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit and would appreciate some tips on how to copy my address book contents from Outlook 2000 over to the new computer so that the email addresses can be used with the included email client. At the moment on my present computer, I share the contacts in Outlook 2000 with Outlook Express V6. I also have calendar appointment entries in Outlook that I would like to copy over to the new machine if there is a calendar program included. Microsoft wants to freeze the Vista incapable lawsuit Hang on, wait till everyone forgets By Egan Orion: Monday, 10 March 2008, 4:23 PM EVER SLIPPERY, Microsoft asked that the "Vista Capable" lawsuit against it be stayed while it appeals the judge's approval of class action standing for the case. The lawsuit, filed almost a year ago, claims that Microsoft misled punters in late 2006 by letting PC makers stick "Vista Capable" labels on lower power machines sold with Windows XP that were later found capable of running only the Home Basic version of Windows Vista rather than the full version that includes most of Vista's new features including the Aero eye-candy graphical interface. It claims that PC buyers paid more for those machines than they would have parted with had they known that they wouldn't be able to support Windows Vista when that was released a few months later in early 2007. Never mind that those PC consumers who bought "Vista Capable" machines are likely better off sticking with Windows XP instead of "upgrading" to Vista, seeing as how Vista has turned out to be even more of a pig on qualudes than all prior versions of Windows. The Vole probably won't be arguing that, but even if it did, that wouldn't let it off the hook for having misled customers who expected that "Vista Capable" actually meant "Vista Ready" when they coughed up the readies. US District Judge Marsha Pechman granted the lawsuit class action status two weeks ago. Microsoft filed a petition to appeal that ruling with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday, a day after it filed a motion before Judge Pechman to stay the lawsuit pending its appeal. If the case is stayed, that would put off any further discovery by the plaintiffs until the appeal is decided, which could take up to three months or more. The delay would postpone additional revelations of potentially embarrassing emails and other documents by Microsoft and PC manufacturers, hardware suppliers such as Intel, and wholesalers and retailers. Release of internal company emails last month disclosed that high level Microsoft executives anticipated the problems caused by the "Vista Capable" labels on PCs sold with Windows XP. Microsoft's OEM partners warned the company that the labels would confuse consumers, and even Microsoft's own executives got burned by buying PCs incapable of running the full version of Windows Vista. In its motion to stay, Microsoft wrote: "Continued proceedings here would cost Microsoft a substantial sum of money for discovery and divert key personnel from full-time tasks...; would intrude on sensitive pricing decisions and strategies by OEMs, wholesalers, and retailers; and would jeopardize Microsoft's goodwill with class members -- all with respect to claims that might not proceed on a class basis at all." Microsoft argued that, if its appeal is successful, any time and money it spends on additional discovery will have been wasted and any further negative publicity will have been raised unnecessarily. It also claimed that continuing discovery while its appeal is pending might needlessly impair certain business partner relationships. "Plaintiffs' discovery almost surely will involve intrusion into the most sensitive pricing decisions of the OEMs, wholesalers, and retailers who sell the PCs at issue and set their prices," Microsoft wrote. "Continued discovery thus will disrupt Microsoft's relationships with its business partners, a disruption that will be unnecessary if the Ninth Circuit reverses." The motion also raised the issue that continuing the lawsuit pending the appeal will require the plaintiffs to advertise nationally for class members to join the litigation, and that the class action search could damage Microsoft's reputation with its customers unfairly. "The result will be nationwide publicity that impugns the ['Vista Capable'] program," it said. With typical Microsoft chutzpah, the appeal to the Ninth Circuit challenges Judge Pechman's basing her approval of class action standing on Washington state law because Microsoft is headquartered there. It also questions her approval of the plaintiff's theory that PC buyers might have paid more for the so-called " Vista Capable" PCs than they would have without those allegedly misleading labels. Like many defendants, the Vole is seeking delay in the hope that the passage of time might work in its favour, as "Vista Capable" PC buyers get over having been taken in, witnesses change jobs, memories fade, documents get lost, and so on.     - New to 64! I'm new to x64. I just reformatted from XP Pro and loaded up XP Pro x64. I must say, I am surprised that many people are having so many problems. On that note, I would offer one word of advice...Do your research!...I Googled my brains off before I ever loaded XP x64 onto my system. I first found out about the drivers needing to be x64. That was no problem, since NVidia makes them now. I also found drivers for my Audigy SE sound card and my Canon Pixma printer. The only thing I am working on now is what kind of Java to install. the x64 version or the x32. I need it for Limewire Pro. I also wrote my support people for some of the apps I used to use, asking them if their software supports x64 and I also found, on my own, many, many apps that support x64, like AMUST Registry Cleaner. Overall, so far, I am very pleased with the progress of how my install is going. The system is fast and stable and I down downloaded all of the possible Windows Updates. This is not an imperative update. Use it only if some game is complaining about not finding some directx "something". There is no harm in installing this update and no reboot is required. I have already done it, I like to have my dll's up to date. Update #2 Sun has a new update of its Java Machine. http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp Go to the "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 5" and click on the download button. Note that the one you want to download is the 32-bit one. "jre-6u5-windows-i586-p.exe" for offline installation or "jre-6u5-windows-i586-p-iftw.exe" for online installation. It gives IE 32-bit Java support. Don't forget to uninstall the previous version first. I just don't know how they have not figured out to do it automatically when installing new versions. I also adds an unnecessary entry in the startup group (registry) that you can disable with no risks. It is a program named jusched.exe or something like that.     - Back up and Restore I recently had to reinsall my operating system. I went to great lengths to back up my files/programs using the XP backup and restore application. I placed the files on a portable hard drive. I installed the operating system and using the restore application tried to restore MS Money Deluxe 2007 for example. The restore application said it worked successfully; however Money would not run. I had to download a trial version and then restore my Money back up file. Same situation without Outlook Express V6. When Microsoft puts out a SP 1 like Visa has out now is the information that
they get from the Windows Defender, Microsoft Spy Net membership site or is
it from area's like this that gather problems and hopeful solutions? And how
much information do they get from Spy Net community. My guess is that most
people don't join the advanced membership because of privacy issues.

Information about what? If you mean feedback during development, they have
a beta program and beta testers give feedback.
