    - Final Thoughts.. (LONG) As I get older, I learn more and having passed birthday number 35 for the second time <g> last month here's some things I've learned in the last year: I've learned that I'm not going to see 64 bit drivers for my Canon S900, Canon has pretty much said so. I'll need to buy a later model photo printer and I'm unwilling to do that. I've learned I'm probably not going to see Logitech issue a 64 bit version of Mouseware in the near future, that project seems far off. Neither am I going to see Microsoft drop their insane phobia against using the middle mouse button any time soon so I can't substitute MSFT drivers for my mouse. That's OK, MSFT drivers never worked as well as Logitech but I really NEED that middle button to double click and third party software isn't as neat and clean as Logitech's Mouseware. I've learned I have no tolerance for the missing features of X64 that XP includes so.... It's gone. Drive H is re-formatted and the boot menu now leaves only XP and Mandriva Linux. When I stumbled across the first reference to X64 on AMD's site, when I immediately logged on to NewEgg and ordered a 64bit motherboard and chip, when they arrived and I assembled my upgraded computer and downloaded the early version of X64, believe me, I had absolutely NO idea it was going to whip me and I'd have argued with anyone who would have told me Linux 64 bit would work for me and Windows X64 wouldn't! I'm still a bit shocked but that's the way it is.... So it's back to XP, the 32 bit version while I continue to attempt to learn Linux and while I wait for the OS formerly known as Longhorn and see what it offers. I've been amazed at how much help this group (and the previous group) has been and how effectively you folks have ferreted out drivers and applications. I've been even more amazed as the patience of Mike Brannagan as he answers the same question for the umpteenth time! One last word, Andre, you do NOT have to answer every single post here! Really, you don't. And quit plagiarizing Mike before he loses some of that patience, OK? ;-) I won't be gone, I'll check in from time to time but since it's been months since I've even tried to use X64 I'm afraid I'm of almost no help here so it may not be often.     - USB Driver Loss on Shutdown I recently assembled a system using a Foxconn MOBO (NF4UK8AA) and an Athlon 64 Venice Core CPU. I updated all the device drivers. The only hardware that I have a problem with is the Mitsumi FDD/Flash Memory reader (FA404M). The FDD works fine and the Flash reader installed correctly the first time. The icons showed under "My Computer", Life was good. When the system went into hibernation or shut down the drivers were lost and I got an "unkown device" in the System Manager. It would not allow a new driver to be installed, the only solution was the change the position on the MOBO of the USB connection for the Flash Reader portion of the drive. I partially fixed the problem by unckecking the "allow computer to turn off this device to save power" in the USB root hub. I still loose the flash media USB drivers when the system is shut down for an extended period of time. Any suggestions? Tag: exchange costs? Tag: 10408

    - RAID Driver Problem The is a repost for two reasons the big one is I made a mistake trying to reply to one of the replies to my original post and got the post flagged as answered. Also I have done some more work on the problem and I am fairly sure that Iâ??m doing something wrong or the RAID Drivers are the problem. I have the following new computer hardware and canâ??t get Windows XP Pro x64 Edition installed using the 2 hard drives configured as RAID 0. Without using the nVIDIA nForce4 RAID chipset controller, XP x64 installs smoothly on the same 2 SATA hard drives and runs fine. (1) Thermaltake Tsunami VA3000 Series case. (2) Thermaltake Purge Power TWV500W W0057 Power supply. (3) AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ (4) ASUS A8N-E Motherboard with BIOS Version 1005. (5) ASUS Video Graphics card EAX800XL/2DTV/256M/A (6) 2 MB DDR PC3200 Memory, Corsair TWINX2048-3200C2PRO, configured as Dual Channel. (7) 2 Western Digital 160GB SATA Hard Drive Configured as RAID 0, Drive WD SATA II P/N WD1600JS (8)CD\DVD Drive, Plextor SATA P/N: PX-716SA/SW. (9) Keyboard and Mouse are PS2 not USB. (10) LCD Monitor. Does any body have a RAID 0 configuration up and running with XP x64 and the ASUS A8N-E motherboard? If you do, can you tell me what you are using for RAID drivers and where you gone them. The 32 Bit RAID drivers that are on the CD that came with the motherboard work fine with Win XP Pro 32 Bit. But the 64 Bit Drives on the CD hangs the installation program as soon as it reads them from the RAID Driver floppy disk. The 64 Bit RAID drivers that are with nVIDIAâ??s nForce4 chipset driver set version 6.66 work a little better, but still cause the installation of XP x64 to fail. Computer does a hard reset during second reboot with no BSOD. Then goes directly to the same diagnostic screen you get if you press F8 during a normal Windows startup. If you try to startup Win XP x64 at that time in Safe Mode it displays the normal list of drives and software being loaded then halts and does a hard reset again. I have the computer up and running with no problems, on Win XP Pro x64, but with the same 2 hard drives NOT configured as a RAID drive set. Without using the RAID controller the installation of XP x64 went smoothly and Iâ??ve had no problem getting all of the other hardware drivers and software installed and working. Computer is stable and even attempts to confuse the OS and cause it to crash have only resulted in it telling me what I was doing is a NO, NO or displaying a message stating what ever I was messing with was having a problem and it would have to be shutdown and restarted. I've tried all the version of RAID drives on the ASUS A8N-E download page. Plus nVIDIA's latest, but I can't get through the XP x64 installation without the computer crashing. Iâ??ve redownloaded all drivers I have tried at lest twice from alternate sites and made new RAID Driver floppies each time with no effect on the problem.     - Very Slow Transfer Speeds on Lan I have 1 Win X64 machine running on a peer-to-peer network with a 3Com 10/100 hub with multiple WinXP machines, and I have 1 process that I always run on X64 and it requires me to transfer large files (200mb-500mb) between the other 32 bit Win XP Pro machines. It can take 14-18 minutes to transfer a 400mb file either To or From X64. In the time it takes me to send 400mb either to/from X64 I can copy 17gb from WinXP Pro (32 bit) to an external firewire hdd. Seems drastically slower than it should be. No other speed problems anywhere on the lan. Net connections on X64 are fine too. The only thing I've tried is to turn off the firewall on X64 - firewall is off on all machines on my lan because it sits behind a hardware firewall - and it makes no difference with the speed.     - Driver advice needed. My copy of x64 finally came in yesterday so I am looking to line up all the drivers I need. So far I've located drivers for: My processor and MB. Soundboard. Raid. Video Board. Epson r200 Photo Printer. Logitech Keyboard/mouse. HP's DVD burner with Lightscribe. Now all I need are drivers for: Epson 4180 Scanner.     - TAP Installation Well I finally received my TAP cd via UPS on Thursday. I always hear that the trial version is the exact same as the final release so I thought I would share a couple of interesting tidbits. I did a clean in install on an existing partition that had the trial version. The first thing that struck me was that it took the TAP disk almost 2 hours to format the 40gig partition and install. The trial version did not take nearly that long maybe 45 minutes total. The next thing is that the trial version seemed to take a long time to render some web sites, for example it could take up to a minute to load usatoday on a 5MBPS cable connection whereas the TAP install handles those same sites as well and as fast as my old XP32.     - application error involving shmgrate.exe Have a problem. Have been successfully using evaluation CD with 3790 build. Bought OEM for final upgrade, accepted upgrade within the program, at the very end of installation, error message popped up, "application error shmgrate.exe at 0x01f00000, memory could not be written". Installation went on to complete, at end got BSOD, and program cycled back to setup for full version. Did same thing when trying to repair the eval version.     - CAPICOM for x64 Hello, a question concerning CAPICOM. The CAPICOM COM client provides services that enable application developers to add security based on cryptography to applications. CryptoAPI includes functionality for authentication using digital signatures, for enveloping messages, and for encrypting and decrypting data. We need this funktionality on Win PE for x64. But i can't find a CAPICOM.dll for x64. Neither on an intalled x64-System nor on the WIN PE 2005. Is there any chance that Microsoft allocates a 64-Bit capicom.dll in the near future?     - Large SATA hard drive (250 gig) - XP64 Hey all, I have a new problem - After I installed XP 32-bit and then went back to XP 64-bit, all of a sudden my hard drive is limited to the old 130 gig thing. The XP-64 install only sees the 130 gig. How do I get my 250 gig hard drive to show up properly again? It is a Hitachi DeathStar SATA 250 gig drive Here's what I have tried: 1) boot up with an ME floppy, run fdisk, delete the unknown partition, and run the XP64 setup no luck 2) set in the bios from Auto to Large, on disk access no luck 3) enable/disable raid support in BIOS 4) look for the bigdrive (or whatever) registry entry, but it does not exits - and I think it is not supposed to in XP64, but I could be wrong. I could swear (but am starting to feel dillusional) that when I installed XP 64 fresh on the drive when it was brand new, that it saw all 250 gigs. I just don't know anymore. any ideas?     - "Error Loading Operating System" After X64 CD Install and Reboot I recently purchased Microsoft Windows XP x64 Professional Edition for my computer that I built. It has a Intel Pentium 4 630 Prescott 3.0GHz Processor with hyper-threading and 64-bit abilities. After I booted the installation disk for Windows, formatted the hard drive (full format, not quick way), and it copied all of the necessary files... it rebooted the system. I ejected the CD so that the hard disk would boot... I get the error: "Error Loading Operating System". I tried reformatting the hard drive and starting the installation process over a couple times, same result. I read some other posts that are roughly similiar to mine and it seems everyone is having problems with their drivers and SATA drives, etc. I am just using an IDE ATA hard drive. The only hardware that I have connected to the motherboard are my ATI Radeon 9100 PCI graphics card, CD burner, and hard drive. Does anyone have any idea what may be causing my problem? Thanks!     - USR Modem driver Some of you posted messages that their USR modem work OK in XP 64 Bit. I called USR pre-sales, one ignorant guy said it is no problem installing any of USR modems in 64 XP. So I went and bought USR5660a, but the thing would not install. Checked for 64 bit drivers, but non found. Called USR support, they apologized, and said they don't have any 64 bit drivers for any modem yet. I can wait, I use the modem for in case the DSL went down.     - EnumProcessModules() weirdness This is a question about running 32-bit applications on 64-bit machines. It's kind of tedious... 32-bit OS = Win XP Sp1 64-bit OS = RTM Standard Server 2003 Sp1 There's some example code that's been around for a long time that shows how to print the names of all the running processes on the system. It goes EnumProcesses() - OpenProcess() - EnumProcessModules() - GetModuleFileNameEx() - printf() I modified the example to not enumerate all of the component modules - I just want the executable name - and to put everything on one line. To compile on 32-bits, I use: 1) Visual Studio 6 2) The IFS DDK + 32-bit Platform SDK and the build utility (no difference in results) To compile on 64-bit, I use the 64-bit version of option 2 above. When I compile and run this on 32-bits, it mostly works. The few access denied errors are acceptable. When I copy the 32-bit image to the 64-bit machine, it mostly doesn't work. When I compile and run on 64-bits, it works.     - Unknown Device in Device Manager - how to identify? In my x64 Device Manager under Other Devices I have an Unknown device (with the usual yellow question mark). On the Properities page, General Tab, under Location: on PCI bus. Under status "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)." On the Driver Tab, everything is Unknown or Not Available, etc. On the Details Tab the Device Instance Id is "ACPI\ATK0110\1010110 Hardware Id is "ATK0110 Several properties are blank Enumerator is ACPI Capabilities are "CM_DEVCAP_UNIQUEID" and "CM_DEVCAP_SILENTINSTALL" Devnode Flags are "DN_HAS_PROBLEM" "DN_DISABLEABLE" "DN_NT_ENUMERATOR" and "DN_NT_DRIVER" etc, etc. I am looking for tips on figuring out how to identify this unknown device so I can deal with it appropriately. There are no cards in the PCI slots (but I am aware that the PCI bus supprots many devices). WinXP Pro x64, AMD Athlon 64 x2, 2GB ram, ASUS A8N SLI Deluxe board, SATA Hitachi drives (not Raid), GeForce 6800 GT video on PCI Express.     - Install Windows XP x64 Hello all, I just set up a new rig: ASUS A8V Deluxe, AMD 64 3200+, 1 GB Kingston, 80 GB Seagate SATA, 80 GB Maxtor EIDE, ATI Radeon 9600XT. I am installing Windows XP x64 on the SATA drive (connected to the VIA K8T800 Pro Controller). I succesfully used the F6 method to get Windows x64 to recognize the SATA drive using dirvers provided from ASUS. After selecting the SATA drive and formatting, Windows asks for a "VIA RAID Combo Driver Diskette" to be inserted in the floppy drive. I have tried what I thought was the right disk (VIA Hyperion Pro 0.99) to get past this issue, but this did not work. I am currently stuck here...I have no idea what to do now. Also, I should mention that Windows x64 recognizes the SATA drive when I install x64 on the IDE drive...I was reading/writing data from the SATA drive. So, the SATA drive works fine. Please HELP!!!!!     - Cannot boot at all; not even safe mode. Ahoy! Until upgrading to the full version, 64-bit was working fine (the trial version, that is). Now that I have obtained the full version of it, it won't boot up AT ALL! This is really starting to get at me since I have bought a 250gb HDD dedicated to the x64 platform. I have tried installing two different copies of x64 (one being my friends copy and the other mine) onto 1. a partitioned hard drive; 2. a completely different hard drive. What I don't understand is why the trial version ran fine and the full version does not even boot! It just simply reboots after I select it from the boot menu (ie, selecting which version of Windows to run). I have an AMD 64-bit 3200 processor; 1GB RAM; ATI Radeon X800PRO (overclocked in Windows 32-bit with ATI Tool); two Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm HDD's (200gb/250gb); and an ASUS K8V SE Deluxe.     - XP x6 Iâ??m having a problem get XP x64 to complete its installation. When the install program restart the second time with Windows XP x64 Pro logo screen showing, system halts and goes to the Diagnostic Startup Screen, same screen you get when you hit F8 during normal Windows startup. If you select Safe Mode, system displays list of files being loaded as usual, but halts and does a hardware reboot. Any attempt to start windows after that takes you directly to Diagnostic Startup Screen. Itâ??s a new system and I installed Windows XP Pro 32 Bit Edition, before trying to install XP x64, and all hardware test Ok. Iâ??m using version 6.66 nForce4 SATA Drivers download for nVIDIAâ??s Web Site for the RAID Installation floppy. RAID Driver floppy created by the CD that came with ASUS A8N-E motherboard caused the XP x64 Install to crash right after it read the drivers supplied on the ASUS CD. My system is includes the following hardware. (1) Thermaltake Tsunami VA3000 Series case. (2) Thermaltake Purge Power TWV500W W0057 Power supply. (3) AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ (4) ASUS A8N-E Motherboard with BIOS Version 1005. (5) ASUS Video Graphics card EAX800XL/2DTV/256M/A (6) 2 MB DDR PC3200 Memory, Corsair TWINX2048-3200PRO, configured as Dual Channel. (7) 2 Western Digital 160GB SATA Hard Drive Configured as RAID 0, Drive WD SATA2 P/N WD1600JS (8) CD\DVD Drive, Plextor SATA P/N: PX-716SA/SW. It looks to me like there is a driver problem, but I donâ??t know how to tell which driver and if I knew the only drivers I have that I can change are the ones on the RAID Drive floppy. All the rest come form the Windows XP x64 installation CD. One other thing I donâ??t understand is what drivers are required in Safe Mode that are not required when the installation is in GUI Display Mode. Depends on your country, but less than $25. I suggest you keep your x86 and
get a trial copy of x64 and dual boot. There is only a little over a week
to exchange if you decide to do that.
