Silicon Sil3114 Raid
Does anybody have the experience to install "two" same Silicon Sil3114 Raid
Cards on the MB, and both of them can work normally.
I have a Sil3114 raid card and a bloody Promise Fastek SATA150 raid card on
hand, but Promise has never provided the X64 driver for intel P6xx. I
installed the Sil3114 beta driver, it is working normally and I want to buy
one more Sil3114 to instead of the bloody, I am wondering if two pieces same

Win XP Prof X64 Ed upgrade
Just got done. The System. ASUS P5AD2-E Premium, P4 640 3.2Ghz, Lga775, 1Gig
Kingston ddr2. Video, BFG Gforce 6600GT. Drives 2x80 GB Barracyda SATA HD in
RAID 0, SONY DRU-720A DVD+R Double Layer DVD+/- RW/+R/CD, no name DVD CD.
Printer Canon PIXMA iP3000.
MOBO 64 Bit drivers are all at ASUS for everything on the MOBO that I use,
i.e. Wifi, Audio, Raid. the only inconvenience was finding the program to
create the F6 RAID floppy.
Graphics Card, Nvida has the 64bit drivers for this card. CD drivers came
off the X64 install disk and appear to be working fine.
Printer :) There are no Canon drivers for this printer, I ran in circles
looking everywhere, called Canon and was told 1-2 months....Then Bingo,
someone mentioned that there were drivers for some Canon printers in the X64
install, went and loaded one at random from Canon list and lol, it works, not
great, but it works and will do unitl Canon release's 64 Bit drivers.......
Software...Games.....WoW works, EQ2 works, Half-life 2 works, they all run
great, if anything better that they used to.
Install difficulty on a scale of 1-10, about 2-3. Why, You should have been
a gamer in the prewindoz days when you had to know how to work on the files
in your HD with a hex/askii editor, you had to a have a different
audio/video/game controller driver for almost each game....

Question(s) about RTM release
I am currently running a multi-boot setup, with Windows XP SP2 on one
partition, and WIndows XP x64 RC2 on another partition (which runs great).
My plan is to download the RTM trial edition when it becomes available while
I wait to obtain a fully-functional (no timebomb) copy for permanent use.
I have two questions:
(1) Will the RTM trial edition install over my RC2 edition, and upgrade it?
(and I guess reduce the license time from 365 days to 120 days). Or do I
need to format and re-install? If so, forget it, RC2 seems stable and
functional enough until I get a full RTM CDROM.
(2) With RC2, the Windows Update seems to work fine, but there has never
been an update to install. Is that because RC2 is "cut off" so-to-speak from
updates and the feature is "up and running" but not "functioning"? Or are
there truly no new updates?
If cut-off, that worries me a little, I'd hate to think I am opening myself
up to security issues by running an OS without security update features. I
know it is Beta and I am not at all bitching at Microsoft, I am just asking
out loud.

Zomax was a bad choice for CRM
Just a general comment for any MS managers who might read this--Zomax was a
terrible choice for handling your x64 Technology Advancement Program customer
relations. A brief list of my own grievences:
1. Had to use a credit card to pay for shipping, but DID NOT RECEIVE a
confirmation email. Quite disturbing, considering Zomax (probably at
Microsoft's direction) makes the upgrade sign-up site look like a MS site,
when in fact it's not. Who has my credit card information, now? Big, big,
mystery.
2. After ordering, the Zomax-run status check web site simply says,
"pending." Pending what, precisely, and until when? Simply "pending" is
inadequate, especially now that I'm concerned about the security and location
of my personal financial information (see #1, above). Strike two.
3. Repeated emails to the address listed on the upgrade site yield no
reply--even direct email inquiries to Zomax go unanswered. Isn't it true that
one of the biggest reasons for outsourcing your customer relations is because
you don't have the staff on hand to handle the inevitable high volume of
communications necessary, and the company you hire has the needed capacity?
Apparently Zomax fails again. Strike three.
Check out the planetamd64.com and extended64.com sites--you'll see I'm just
a drop in the bucket. MS, you really dropped the ball when you hired Zomax.
Please don't use them again. Tag: errors logs Tag: 1126

Dual DVI PCI Express Video Card compatibility
Howdy,
I just got a couple of LCD displays with DVI.
Want to get a reasonably priced (~$250) ATI or Nvidia video card that is PCI
Express x16, dual DVI out (NOT 1 vga/1 dvi) and of course, x64 compatible.
Going to the ATI web site, its not clear which are x64 compatible, although
they list drivers for Radeon and FireGL:
https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894
But when you browse their products, they have workstation, theater, and all
kinds of mixed up categories that dont make it clear or sort just the pci-x,
dual dvi, and x64.
Then when you go to nvidia web site, they seem to cover everything with
their unified driver architecture:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp64_71.84.html
which sounds like i can buy any GEforce card and I'll be ok?
I'll be using it for dual desktop, need pivoting support, web design,
general business apps and some video editing, dvd, etc. I'm not a gamer.
I did some googling but didnt find any specific reviews, although some good
general information on DVI and LCD:
http://www1.graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20041129/index.html
http://www.anandtech.com/displays/showdoc.aspx?i=2400
And compusa seems to have only 2 pci-x cards that have dual dvi and both are
nvidia-based. and they are oddball brands (bfg, pny), so i can't seem to
find reviews on them.
http://www.compusa.com/products/products.asp?N=200105+4294966325&Ne=300752
Appreciate any recommendations or experiences and any good web sites with
listings, articles, reviews.
Still waiting for my exchange order on x64...no confirmation nothing.

Installing printer drivers for shared printers ?
I've got several printers spooled from a 32 bit print server, I want to
connect to these from an x64 machine.
Whenever I try to connect the x64 machine to the network shared printer it
says the driver doesn't exist on the print server, in the "sharing" tab on
the printer properties on the print server I have the option to install an
x64 driver for remote printers, but I can't find the files it needs.
The x64 box has the drivers if I install the printer locally but I've
pointed the 32bit print server at all parts of the x64 CD and it can't seem
to find the additional drivers it needs?
Anyone know how to install the drivers?

Question regarding 16-bit and service pack
Can XP x64 run 16-bit applications too? I haven't been able to find any
information regarding this.
And does the XP x64 SP1 equal the 32-bit XP SP2? Or do we still have to wait

Is anyone maintaining a list of x64 software?
I was thinking of contacting some companies to enquire about x64
versions of their software. I'm thinking about the likes of WinZip,
Acrobat Reader, Textpad and others that I use. I expect there are many
people and many, many applications that could be added to the list.
I wonder if anyone has thought about maintaining a list, where you could
check to see if there's any knowledge on the app you're interested in.
So, you could go check and find out, say, that WinZip *are* planning an
x64 version, with a Beta starting "Q2 2005" and ship expected around Q3.
This is just an example.
I guess it would make sense to allow all parties to register some form
of interest per-product. The idea is, the site maintainer could say to
WinZip: "Look, 3000 people are interested, so there is a market for it.
Also, you can contact these people and invite them to join your beta
if required."
Just thinking out loud...

Can someone tell me where I can find information about release date for

I just loaded 64bit up and I lost a lot of the old messages on the board.
What I can not find is does anyone have any dates or tips for this hardware?

One last question what is the last day I can do the free upgrade from XP

Help - Unrecognised drive
Hi
Have Win XP (No SP1 or SP2) dual booting with Win98.
2 hard discs each with 4 partitions, all FAT 32.
All worked well until recently when XP doesn't read the second hard disk
announcing it 'Unformatted'.
Swap to WIN98 and everything is as it should be with all files & partitions
in place & data readable.
Have:
Deleted drive driver in XP & allowed it to re-install.
With Win98, run Scandisk on all partitions, some errors found on a child
partition.
Tried Partition Magic in XP, shows the Partitions, but with labels mucked
up.
Tried " " Repair ", advises files open & no can do.
Tried " File checker in XP, nothing happens after the first
menu.
Any ideas apart from re-formatting & starting again?

Licensed CPU support information on OEM product purchase.
Hi,
I wish to purchase a version of windows 64bit OEM, but the suppliers can
not tell me how many CPU's the product will support.
How can this information be found on the package so that I can get the
correct version for the machine I intend to build?
Just so you have the information, I intend to use a Tyan K8WE dual cpu
motherboard. I intend to use single core amd's for the moment but when the
dual core become available at a realistic price I will be upgrading to twin
dual core amd's. So I will need a version that supports two physical cpu
each with 2 cores.
I am not clear as to if you are counting a dual core cpu as a single cpu
license for windows ?
If you could let me know how to discover this information, so I can
inform any provider of software the correct information for them to send the
correct version of your product.

Offline this week
Sorry, folks. I'm going to be mostly offline this week -- I've got to make a

Depending on how things go, I may be able to get online and do some NG stuff
at night, but I'm not counting on it. My learning curve on this project is
pretty steep and I may not have the time or energy left.
Should be back online by the weekend, but it IS a major holiday weekend up

Problems with x64
I installed x64 Pro fresh on a brand new hard drive. The installation went
smoothly and I'm using the latest nvidia x64 drivers for my video card.
However, everytime I right click on a file in windows explorer, the screen
blinks off (or goes black) for a moment and then comes back on. I haven't
been able to replicate this anywhere else.
Also, when I have multiple levels on my taskbar (which is set to show only
one level and grouping windows is turned off), I have a wierd issue where if
I'm not on a particular level (and this seems to be random) and click on the
bar more than once, it switches to this random "default" level. Say if I had
three levels, and the second level was the random default, if I was on the
first level and clicked on a window it would restore normally. Now if I
switch to another level on that first level, the task bar would switch over
to the second level as if I hit one of of the arrow buttons to do so. This
is getting really really annoying as I often do have more than one level now
in XP.
Any ideas? I had 2kPro before so I have no idea if any of these problems
would have occured in 32 bit XP with the same hardware configuration...but I
doubt it. Tag: errors logs Tag: 917

x64 with a ps/2 mouse and USB gfx tablet; Possible problem found
To cut a long story short, I use a Logitech MX1000 in the ps/2 port (USB
tends to lag on 32-bit for some reason). I also have a Wacom graphics tablet
in a USB port. Under 32-bit XP this causes no problems whatsoever, and I can
switch between the two whenever I like.
Now... x64 picks up the mouse as a ps/2 compliant, and the Wacom works as a
mouse (listed as HID under mice) too. There are no problems using the Wacom
as a mouse. If however I switch to use the MX1000, the horrendous lag
problems occur with it. Every few seconds, the mouse starts behaving
erratically, jumping or pausing for a few seconds, making games unplayable
and Windows use generally quite unpleasant.
However, if I unplug the Wacom tablet, instantly the problems disappear and
the mouse performs as normal.
Bug? Unusual conflict..? Recommendations? (Yes, my drivers are all up to
date for the record ;)
After all, x64's vast memory is often purported to be most useful to people
working with graphical or video applications AND for games, and a lot of
people thus may have exactly this kind of configuration.

VIA Chipsets and SATA Drives
I'm getting tired of saying this, but SOMETHING CHANGED BETWEEN RC2 AND RTM!
The drivers that worked during the early days of the beta for using SATA
drives in VIA chipset motherboards (A8N, A8V, amongst others), WILL NOT WORK
RIGHT WITH THE RELEASED VERSION!
Please. READ the messages here, and learn from them, and save yourself some
pain.
You need to download updated drivers from: planetamd64.com or directly from
VIAArena. The ones on the ASUS site do NOT WORK. You need to make a new F6
disk to use during the installation.
Finally, on the A8V, at least, you need to use the two SATA connectors next
to the VIA chip, NOT the ones next to the Promise chip. The right ones are
marked "SATA1" and "SATA2". The wrong ones are marked "SATA RAID1" and "SATA
RAID2". And then disable the Promise controller in the BIOS.
These boards work, and work well. I'm sure that eventually all the driver
problems for them will get sorted. But in the mean time, READ and save
yourself some pain, and save those of us trying to help some bandwidth.

Got my XP Pro x64 trial CD
Finally came in the mail today. Time to play...
Has to be activated within 14days of installation.
Apparently, you will be able to install the final release over top of the
trial, or perhaps change the PID number... but if you decide against the
"upgrade", you'll need to re-install your prior OS and perhaps even need to
re-format the drive first.
Most of the product insert talks about using the built-in and online help
and support. Windows Update will be the normal route for updates.
Requires AMD Athlon64 or Opteron, or Intel Xeon or P4 with EM64T, 256M RAM,
1.5G hard disk space, super vga (800x600dpi) or better video card, CD ROM
or DVD drive, keyboard and MS Mouse or compatible pointing device.
Obviously, the system BIOS and chipset must also support x64, all 64-bit
drivers, etc. as with the server version... Tag: errors logs Tag: 816
