    - is my machine good enough? ok i apologise in advance for the long post, i just have a few questions about my system and its performance with Vista. I have just bought a HP NX6325 Sempron 3500+ notebook with the following relevant spec: AMD Turionâ?¢ 64 X2 TL-52 : 1.60 GHz, 512 KB L2 cache, 667 MHz FSB 1 x 1024MB DDR2-533MHz 80GB Hard Drive ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 graphics which gives 256MB shared system vid memory Windows XP Professional Edition - Free upgrade to Vista Business 64-bit Now the questions. Im going to use the free upgrade to Vista Business and i think the machine will cope enough, i will hopefully upgrade my RAM to 2Gb pretty soon but do you suggest i go for the 64bit version? will my machine cope with that? Im only using the machine for a few programs and mainly the Internet, programs include MATLAB (mathmatical coding software), Photoshop and some other adobe programs but i would say Matlab is the biggest of these and demands the most power. I do want to use vista to its full potential and get the most out of it but i dont want to overload my machine so it runs slowly when using anything. i also wanted to know is the free vista business upgrade easy? im going to do it as soon as i get the machine so it can fully wipe the HDD and start from scratch.     - Losing Icons for Office Doc and Spread Sheets I am not seeing my program icons for MS Office 2003 doc and xls files on the desktop or on any of my drives. My platform is: Windows Vista Ultimate 64. 2 GB RAM. Six Hard drives with 5 internal and one external. It is an ASUS A8NSLI_32 Deluxe MB. I had XP 64 on here and all worked well with this issue.     - Please help with CDONTS and sending mail?????? I am trying to run reports and send these by email. I found an article (186204) in the Knowledge base but no joy???? I have a MailServer (which I believe has the SMTP server) a file server with IIS, and my own 'Client' also with IIS, and it is from this machine that I am trying to send the mail.     - Flashing BIOS and getting 'Access Denied' I am attempting to flash the BIOS and I keep getting a message stating, 'Cannot Load Driver C:\PHLASH.SYS ACCESS DENIED' then it says to check my permissions and log on as administrator. I am using the admin account and have checked all possible permissions and can't find the problem. I am running Vista Ultimate 64bit. ANY HELP would be greatly appreciated.     - I receive vista ultimate 64 today!!!! I installed from desktop of beta build 5744. Saved my documents & setting with easy file transfer before I installed RTM.Did a "clean" install. Vista saved My windows.old files. Install went very well. Easy file transfer also went well. Programs I had problems with in beta 5744,installed & ran fine in the RTM (6000). I installed the workaround for my HP Photosmart Printer (Deskjet 5550) seems to work ok. Still looking forward to the release of drivers for my Photosmart 7550.Over all I would say I'm very pleased. Thanks to all in this group for their help over the last few months.Really enjoyed the beta experiences. Oh! BTW Charlie I kept XP Pro 64, using duel boot.XPHome XP PRO 64 & VISTA Ultimate!     - Dual boot operating system depends on ntldr and ntdetect version?? I have a dual boot system that I am trying to get up and running, but I cannot get dual boot to work without constantly changing the versions of ntldr and dtdetect.com in c:\ . I have 33 scsi drives, and the first drive is divided into 3 volumes, c, f, and z. C and F are NTFS, Z is fat32 (eventually I may want to load an old operating system there, but for now it is basically unused or for data storage. Anyway, win2k is up and running on F, in f:\winnt It has been working for almost 2 years. When I first set up the system, I tried dual boot with xp x64, but it stopped working after a while, and I just used it as a win2k machine. Now, I have reloaded xp x64 into c:\windows. I have dual boot set up, and it looks correct, but, if the version of ntldr and ntdetect in c:\ are the newer ones supplied with xp x64, then xp x64 boots up fine, but I get an error message "winnt\system32\config\system missing or corrupt" if I try to boot win2k. If I replace the ntldr and ntdetect.com in c:\ with the older versions from win2k sp4, then win2k boots up fine, but I get an error about a missing or corrupt ntoskrnl.exe file, and I cannot boot xp x64.     - Can't Burn DVD/CD's Under Vista 64-bit This is driving me crazy. I am using Vista 64-bit and cannot seem to burn anything at all. My burner reads everything fine (plays movies, install disks, etc.) but I can't write anything. I have tried using Windows Movie Maker as well as Nero 7.7.5.1, always get the same result. My burner is a Samsung SH-S182M. I have also tried my old burner (Sony DRU-710A) and I get the same result. The Sony works fine on my other computer running XP Home. It is like the burner can't finish the burn. Sometimes the disk is actually burnt (I can see the burning on the disk) but it never gets finalized (or concluded, or whatever) and other times the disk just remains blank. The error I usually get is to the effect to place a blank disk in the burner, even though one is in there. Other times the error is " Cannot create the DVD. The DVD cannot be burned because an error occurred. Try using another blank disc and make sure that your DVD burner is connected and working properly. Learn more about this problem. " Any ideas???     - XP 64bit and Vista 64bit questions I've got one computer to migrate to Vista Business 32-bit and one to migrate to either XP Pro 64-bit or Vista Business 64-bit, but the questions involve both platforms. One computer is a 32-bit computer running XPPro, with it's printers shared out to a (second) 64-bit computer running XP Home 32-bit at the moment. The first is upgrading to Vista Business 32-bit, and the second one is going to upgrade to either XP Pro 64-bit or Vista Business 64-bit. Will the computer ending up at Vista Business 32-bit have issues after the upgrade sharing printer drivers with the 64-bit computer, or do I need to do separate driver installations for both printers (assuming I get printer drivers for Vista Business and XPPro 64-bit for both printers)? I would assume that printer drivers if both machines end up at Vista Business will be simpler. What wireless cards are available that run under Vista Business or Vista Business 64-bit? What wireless cards are available that run under XP Pro 64-bit? Will the 64-bit machine show any performance improvement in running Doom 3 and Quake 4 <g>? It comes with 2 gigs of RAM and a 512-meg ATI Radeon X1300 card in an AGP slot, and ATI just released 64-bit drivers for the card.     - internet access blocked I am using Firefox web browser with Windows XP64 to view mapquest.com, but after a minute or two of pushing the map around web access is completely non functional. Internet explorer is also non functional. I have already asked my ISP about this. They had me change or enable my activex and reboot my computer and router but abviousely it has not helped.     - XPx32 to Vistax64 switch - Indecisive I'd like to switch from XP Pro x32 to Vista Ultimate x64 but all the talk of software and driver compatibility problems has me 'frightened' to make the switch. If I do switch, I'd buy Vista Ultimate x64 at retail. My PC is OK for it. I have an HP xw6200 workstation with dual Xeon 3.6GHz CPUs and 5GB RAM installed (2 2-GB DIMMS and 2-51 GB DIMMS.) I have 5GB because HP wouldn't sell the xw6200 here in Canada without the two 512s installed. I'll be replacing them with two 2GB DIMMS if I upgrade the OS. From the HP website, the HP ixw6200 is Vista x64 compatible and drivers are available for all the internal hardware (sound & video cards, DVD burners, etc.. I have dual 23" wide-screen displays off an nVidia Quadro FX4400. card I've provided a list of my main software and hardware peripherals below. I've tried to check the manufactures' sites for compatibility but it gets pretty confusing. I've read several other threads here that make me think moving to x64 is a wise thing for me to do but I'm still concerned about how much of my software and peripherals will not work. I hope I'm not being too 'selfish' by asking for opinions on my specific situation. How many things won't work? I need a feel for exactly how messy this switch would be. Software: Many Adobe applications including, PS CS2 (running CS3 Beta), Premiere Pro 1.5, After Effects 6.5, Audition 1.5, Acrobat 7. Microsoft Office 2000 Pro (although I don't mind upgrading to Office 2007 if I have to) IIS 5.1, Nero 6 Ultra, Trend PC-illiin 2007, and over 100 lesser know programs, like WinFax, Quicken, Tax software, FlipAlbum, Panorama Factory, GPS and mapping software and much, much more. Hardware peripherals: Epson scanner V750 Pro (x64 drivers available), Nikon CoolScan IV, Canopus ADVC-300, Wacom graphics tablet model ET, a Palm OS PDA (Sony Clie), 7 external HDs (some Firewire and some USB), a USB connected MP3 player, a Bluetooth USB adapter for my cell phone, 2 DVD HP burners (know to have x64 Vista drivers), an external USB phone modem for faxing, 2 USB connected digital cameras, one Firewire connected video camera, a Garmin Vista GPS (ironic eh?) that connects via the workstation's serial port.     - OT Request for Comments Sorry to post this in this group as it is way off topic, but, there are a lot of switched on people in here I've just got in from seeing a client I built a machine for him close on 12 months ago Some of the USB ports have failed so I have had to install another main board I explained to the client that because of the way oem Windows works I would have to install a fresh copy of Windows This I bought and have not charged for I also explained that this would mean a complete reformat of his hard drive with total loss of data and he should back up everything he see's fit He said that he backs everything up but would I do the same I agreed and asked him if he keeps everything in his Document and Settings folder or does he keep any data in any other locations He said that everything was in his Documents and Settings folder When I picked up his machine he added the fact that there were some emails that were very important and he must have them restored He asked if I could back them up and I said yes and backed up his Outlook Express folder The upshot is that when I have returned his machine and set up a firewall, antivirus software, anti malware/spyware software And configured his email client and restored all of his email And, then installed his Office suite And then installed his printer He then says where is all the stuff on my desktop To cut a long story short I had to say is that it did not exist any more It appears that there were some [very] important documents on there His argument is that I should have told him he should have backed up his desktop My argument is that if any data is important then it should be backed up on at least a daily basis I couldn't explain this as he was in a state of total loss of control and I really thought he was going to physically atack me He also said that he will be sueing me Can anyone suggest my best course of action here My initial feelings are to email him and explain that all I had to do was to replace his main board and install the Windows operating system Any data and programs should have been his responsibility The additional work was PR Given that a lot of people here work in the IT industry do you think this is a good idea or should I let him talk to his legal people who may tell him that he should have backed up his system first, before allowing the format of a hard drive, and then let him get back to me This is the first time I've been in this position and hope that if someone has been in this situation themselves they could let me know how they handled it Again, sorry this is so off topic but the only people that may have experienced this are here Mike Tag: downgrading Tag: 44936

    - Vista 64 and Kodak Easyshare problem I have downloaded and installed the latest version of Kodak Easyshare software. After rebooting, the software loads, and then I get an error that states "Thunking spooler APIS from 32 to 64 process has stopped working" and it goes through checking for solutions from Microsoft, and ends the process. Easy share works to the extent that it opens and runs, but you cannot print from within the program. Anybody else experienced this? Any ideas? I've searched Kodak's website, and find no mention of this problem, and very sketchy information about it period. Also searched Microsoft's Knowledge Base to no avail.     - Vista 64 Lockups Just got win vista 64 bit home premium. did not install any drivers 1st off, tried some games, movie files, etc and the computer freezes forcing a hard reset. tried installing nvidias chipset and video drivers with the same thing. tried my sound blaster audigy 2 zs gamer-same, removed it then tried the onboard sound and it still locks soon as i start something that utilizes demanding video. everything else seems fine, web browsing, email, usenet etc. It tells me that every nvidia driver was not digitally signed and a couple of times i had a 'windows failed to start because one or more files could not be authentically verified' or some similar message. is there a way to disable the driver verification in this ver of windows? or anyone else experience similar behavior and how to fix? much thanks for any info provided.     - Media Player11 not playing WMV files I just installed XP 64 and ran all the updates (61) but when trying to play any WMV files my computer completely slows down to almost a non-working state. I am able to play MP3's with no issue. Here are my specs: Pentium D 3.4Ghz 2Gig OCZ Ram 160 Gig SATA HD GEForce 7800 GS 256 Ram AGP Video Card (BFG) This is using the media player 11 which says it is for XP64 but I noticed in task manager it is running in 32bit mode.     - How do I upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit? I just recently got a gateway PC with 32-bit vista installed on it. I'm trying to get my hands on a 64-bit copy of vista. I know u can order the CD for a "minimal fee" but everytime I enter my serial it says "there are no available upgrades for your package." I have Vista home Premium and I know the 64-bi version excists so whats the deal? Is there anyway I can download the ISO of the 64-bit from microsoft or somethin? Yes, you can use an upgrade version if you have a qualifying product CD
such as Windows 98 (x64 isn't a qualifying product) but you won't be
able to do an upgrade install, you'll have to do format the
drive/partition and do a full install.
