win xp / professional / dell latitude d610

I use a pen and tablet and set the touch pad and pointing stick are both to
enabled. This set up has worked fine for about 2 years.
Just a few days ago, i noticed the cursor oscillating up and down with a
range of around 25mm. I then disconnected the pen and tablet , but the touch
pad and stick control failed to work. I shut down and re-booted with pen and
tablet disconnected, the cursor traveled under its own energy to the top of
the screen and stayed there. The only method that works to move it is the
pointer stick, enormous effort is required to move the cursor using the
pointer stick. I have now disabled the touch pad and pointer stick when a USB
device is plugged in that is used to move cursor. The cursor now behaves
correctly, what do I need to look at in order to return the cursor behavior
to its correct status -i.e touch pad and pointer stick always enabled when a
USB device is installed.

Thanks for taking a look at my question

This really has nothing whatsoever to do with 64-bit Windows, the purpose of
this particular newsgroup. You might have better luck over on one of the XP
newsgroups.

All that being said, there's really only two likely causes - a driver
problem or a hardware problem. From your description, I'm guessing it's
actually a hardware problem, probably with the touch pad. It sounds very
much like the touch pad is defective.

This forum is for 64-bit problems, but it would appear you have either a
hardware problem or you have a driver problem. You might try reinstalling
the drivers first.

I had the same problem as you on a laptop of mine twice now. in one case the
touchpad was defective and in the other the little blue mouse thing imbeded
in the keyboard (Finger mouse they call it I think) was defective.

Like Charlie said it would probably be the hardware, but it never hurts to
try the driver first just in case you are lucky.
