x64 Edition Not Booting
I have downloaded the x64 trial edition of Windows XP Pro. When loading from
boot to install it, it does to the installation screen and loads everything.
Then when it says that it's starting Windows, it stops working and hangs-up.
The HDD LED stops flashing and it just completely freezes. I have an Abit

understand why this isn't working. Tag: OT: Got computer rage? LOL Tag: 4046

Java Runtime Installation Error on XP 64 bit
Hi, I am attempting to install the Java Runtime file on my Windows XP 64
system. I've attempted both the JRE 32 bit - jre-1_5_0_02-windows-i586-p, and
the 64 bit - jre-1_5_0-rc-windows-amd64, by the manual downloads, either file
i get an error after i choose either Custom or Express install. (one of those
with the "send error report" options)
DPE is not active, when it is, it pauses the installation on the Custom or
Express choice.
Any ideas on how i could get Java Runtime installed on this system?
Thanks ahead of time,

An on-the-ball software developer...
I posted below that Paragon Drive Backup does not work on x64, but it's a
great product on 32 bit XP. Joseph Conway recommended that I email Paragon
and ask them their plans. I did, and below is what I got back in short
order. I'm impressed!
Dear Martin!
Yes, there are such plans. At present our software is being tested for
compatibility with 64-bit platforms. In the nearest future we are
going to realize 64-bit both Windows and Linux versions of our
products.
Would you please provide us with some technical information about
configuration of the workstation which you are going to install our
software to? Describe briefly the hardware: CPU, RAM, computer model,
SCSI controllers, hard disks, CD/DVD drive etc. This information will
be very useful for us.
If you have any questions, please, do not hesitate to contact us.

dvd/cd combo drive...
i'm having trouble getting xp64 to "see" burned dvds. my system is a
presario r3240us with amd athlon64 and xp64 os, with a combo cd-r/rw
dvd+r/rw drive (model hl-dt-st gca-4040n, apparently made by lg). i've used
several software apps to burn the data, with the latest run on vso's
copytodvd. each app shows progress and a completed task, but nothing shows
in win explorer at the end except a "blank cd". checking on another machine
running 32-bit xp pro, the data have been successfully burned to the dvd and
show up appropriately.the same pattern occurs despite using different discs
(all rated for the appropriate burn speed) made by different companies.
finally, movie-encoded dvds do play properly, whether triggered by autoplay
or manually started. and burned cds show up just fine.
any thoughts on why the machine isn't reading the dvd appropriately?
thanks,

2 copies of internet explorer???!!!
when i upgraded to XP x64 edition i noticed to my disgust that there are 2
versions of ie. a 32 bit and a 64 bit one.
If i'd wanted a 32 bit copy i'd have stuck with XP x86!
So what i'd like to know is...
1. is there any reason why internet explorer had to have 2 copies, x64 and
x86? whereas outlook express, notepad, and nearly every other application
bundled managed to get by with just the one (x64) copy?
2. is there any way i can get rid of the x86 version as windows keeps using
it as my default web browser and i hate having 2 programs for the same jjob
on my computer... to me its just messy

x64 Drivers for Promise RAID PDC20319
Have just installed the trial version of XP x64. All went pretty well. Only
have problems with my RAID controller for my Promise RAID PDC20319 and the

I know 64bit is targeted as a serious workstation OS but I thought I would

I've been wondering (Re: Orders)
I've just been thinking... If the orders opened up on the 25th of april...
wouldn't you think that at least *some* copies had been produced for this
25th date? Did *anyone* receive their Trade-In copies? If so, then that
clears everything up, they made a few, and ran out in the first day, right?
But I've not heard of anyone receiving their Trade-In copies... Just gift
copies and OEM purchases...
Isn't it strange that they didn't have *any* ready to ship?
FYI, I only recently ordered (my OEM COA wasn't being accepted until last
week), so I know I'm not gonna see it for weeks... I just found it strange
that the trade-in program would have been activated without any supply
(aparently). Anyone want to add some insight into this?

Reverting to windows 32 bit xp
Just though I would drop by one last time and say thank you for the help and
goodbye :) I am going back for two reasons. one, I don't think there will be
64bit drivers available for things like printers, scanners, webcams, ipods
for a good long time if ever, companys put there development money where the
market is and x64 will be a hobby os for sometime to come and. I am not going
to run a system that has problems installing games :) and I know there are
ways to trick the games into installing. Two, it appears that MS and Intell
and the recording industry are going to force some fool copyright software
down our throats in the dual core pentiums and if thou I do not beleive it is
right to steal software I do not think this is the way to go, besides I am
real tired of calling india everytime I want to reinstall windows xp home.
MS has to understand that that people in poor countrys will continue to steal
the os no matter what they do, I am amazed when I travel to the carribean how
many people do this. So, thanks again and good luck with x64.

I'm a newbie to IIS, but I'm pretty sure I have permissions correct.
Thinking it's a driver issue I've downloaded the latest jet, but on instal

Thinking it may be MDAC I downloaded MDAC_TYP.EXE, but this errors "This

user account recovery...

trial version of xp pro 64-bit and office xp pro package. in loading the
customer preview version of xp64 (before the trial set which is now
running), i did a full install rather than a partitioned run. the result, i
overwrote the existing user accounts and computer name from the previous xp
pro 32-bit os. no problem, except i had a suite of files encrypted. and, no,
i had neither designated a recovery agent nor copied the certificate to a
floppy/other computer (yes, i know, STUPID!).
i've gone back and found the user name (e.g., steve(steve@STEVESLAPTOP)) and
certificate generated during the encryption process by digging through the
recycler folders. but, since i switched user account names and renamed the
computer (no longer, e.g., STEVESLAPTOP) during the xp64 load, i still can't
access the suite of encrypted files no matter what i've tried.
my question, then: is there a way to restore/recreate that user account so
that xp sees the certificate that remains on the machine? i haven't tried
it -- because it seems too stunningly simple, occam's razor not
withstanding -- but i doubt that simply renaming the computer and creating
an account with the same name as before would work. it's incredibly
frustrating to be this close to recovering data and not knowing how to do so
(if it's even possible).
