Admittedly an off-the-wall question:

When Vista comes out, what do you think the chances are that people with
retail versions of XP x64 will get a price break?

1) We are, in a sense, beta testers of the 64-bit world.

2) I assume it would be an easier transition from x64 to Vista than from any
32-bit version of windows. Seems like it would be an easier upgrade.

Windows XP Professional x64 Edition is not in beta, it came out of beta
April 25th 2005. So saying you are beta tester is just your opinion. No, you
will not get a price break unless you are buying an upgrade edition of
Windows Vista that is in line with the upgrade path of Windows XP
Professional x64, which Microsoft has not specified.

I suspect the following upgrade paths will be Vista Business, Enterprise and
Ultimate Edition since XP Professional x64 share the same common core
architecture with Microsofts previous generation Business operating systems.

I won't even attempt to guess at the probability, but I will gladly vote
for for the motion!

All in favor, say "Aye!"

Right. I was speaking figuratively. I did say we are beta testers "in a
sense." What I meant by that is that any difficulties we are coming across
and reporting should only help Vista become a more stable system, even
though we are not using Vista.

Well, Windows is in on-going development generally, so when stumble across
something we think could be easier, in a sense, its really beta testing.

Given past experience with new Microsoft operating systems, I would strongly
suspect that users of current Windows XP x64 Edition would be eligible for
an Upgrade version of 64-bit Windows Vista. And that should be a significant
price advantage over buying a new retail copy.

I rather doubt is especially since XP x64 is not retail.

Prior Retail versions have allowed upgrade from OEM. Charlie is right on
this one.

Does that mean you don't consider OEM versions as retail?

Re: Any chance of a Vista price break by Charlie

MS has, so far as I'm aware, always considered OEM versions as suitable for
an upgrade path. That being said, even if they were to not consider OEM
acceptable for 32-bit Windows, I'd be very surprised if they didn't for x64,
simply because there have not been any non-OEM versions available.

And yes, MS does NOT consider OEMs as retail. They're not.

Well, then I correct my original post. When I referred to "people with
retail versions of XP x64," I meant non-beta versions that the computer user
had paid for. I had assumed X64 was available off the shelf as well as via
OEM. Mine was OEM with a new computer I bought.

There is NO retail version of x64, period. The OEM version is the only one
Microsoft has offered.

Understand this, all versions of Windows XP except Starter Edition will have
a suitable upgrade path to Windows Vista. OEM, Volume License and Retail.

OEM - You will be able to upgrade using Vista OEM media, although that would
not under your License agreement, Vista Volume License media which is
recommended since Volume License is an upgrade and Retail Full or Upgrade
license, the upgrade Vista License will be determined if owned a previous
full version of Windows for the computer you plan on upgrading to Windows
Vista, that computer must have a full OEM or Retail license to be eligible.
