    - Dual boot blues Hi all, After all the dual boot instructions you guys have posted, I managed to mess up my computer anyway. Maybe one of you will help me if I promise to follow directions. I started with XP64. Then I brought an old drive that had XP32 on it, reinstalled the system to try to get a dual boot (I know I shouldn't have done that but I was in a hurry and needed to get XP32 working) and it seemed to have worked...but not really. I got a dual boot alright but now the XP32 works and the XP64 doesn't. When I select XP64 I get the following message: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe please reinstall a copy of the above file I'm not even sure where I would find this file to copy. Yeah, I know that I should know but I just don't. When I try to start from the XP64 CD, I end up on a C:\WINDOWS> prompt with little indication as to what to do.     - 32 bit Windows 2003 Server on x64 processor I probably have to return my new machine tomorrow, but I'm trying to figure this out. We got a new machine, and because of miscommunications, it came with a 64 bit version of the Intel DUAL Core P4. I didn't want that. In any case, the vendor install installed Windows 2003 Standard Server R1 and on the two CDs it says X64 Edition. Well, I can't use to because I must install a PCI Card that only supports 32 bit drivers. The OS did not recognize them. So my question is, does this Windows 2003 Standard Server R1 with 2 CD's allow me to install the regular 32 bit version of Windows 2003 standard server? Will CD installer ask me if I want 32 bit or 64 bit version of Windows? The info at Microsoft, the readme and help isn't very clear with this complex version of Windows 2003 edition. I probably won't have a choice if tomorrow I find out the PCI card will not work with the 64 bit CPU or bus hardware, regardless of the OS, but if I all need to do is reinstall with the 32 bit version of Window 2003, then I will that route rather then return the machine tomorrow to replace it with a 32 bit CPU instead.     - Diskeeper 2007. Diskeeper 2007 was released today. Vista isn't supported yet but x64 is. I tested the beta with good results. I prefer the Professional-Premier version but my budget went with the Professional version. New features include an automatic defragmentation of all partitions during idle time which has no effect on system efficiency. The boot-time defragmentation doesn't corrupt Vista partitions.     - 4 GB Memory not Recognised On Windows Server 2003 x64bit OS with 3GB memory - 2x 1GB and 2 x 512MB. I replaced the 2 x 512MB with 2 x 1GB, therefore the system now has 4 x 1GB = total 4GB. The bios see it as 4GB but Windows x64bit see it as 3.5 GB. When I put them in pairs, both pairs in Windows report 2GB but when I place all 4 it reports 3.5. Hope that explanation makes sense. Do I need to place the /3GB /PAE switch in the boot.ini? I thought the x64bit sorted out the memory allocation issue? Have you seen this before?     - Devmgr.dll Having problems with this guy. I am running GDB of MingW on x64. It runs until it tries to debug an executable. Then I get "Error: dll starting at 0x78d41000 not found." Dependency Walker states that everything is ok, but devmgr.dll. It states that it is an AMD64 build (I am on Opteron). All others are x86. I think what happened is that the 64-bit version of devmgr got stuck in the System32 folder instead of the SysWOW64.     - XP for IA64 ... where to get it? My TAM tells me that I need to get it from the OEM of the machine I am going to run it on. I think thats crap. We have such an obsene select agreement with MS, that if the bits can be had, we should be able to get them. So I won this crazy auction for a dual itanium workstation, and I really dont think that IBM is going to send me media. Unless I can use a key from Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition for IA64, I gotta come up with something. Hell, I might just install Enterprise on this thing and call it a day.     - OT: New laptop! And Dynamic stiping question Many of you know I've been considering a laptop for quite some time. Finally bought an HP Pavilion dv9000, Core2 Duo T5500, 2gb DDR2 RAM, 2 x 100gb SATA drives, GeForce Go 7600 256mb dedicated vid card, 17" wide screen and TV tuner card, 1000mbps network card, wireles NIC as well. Costco, $1,500! Yay! I'll think I'll leave XP Media Edition on until Vista x64 is released. Now that I'm done bragging, I do have a question. I already asked this in microsoft.public.storage, but got no response, you you are the lucky guys and gals today. I have two Fujitsu 100gb HDDs. Has anyone converted their disks to Dynamic and striped their drives, basically running software RAID0? Any feedback for me? I've moved much of my data to the laptop and access that from my other two workstations, so increased throughput would be nice. Going from U320 SCSI RAID0 to this was definitely a hit in performance, so I would consider it if it does really improve throughput. The HDDs are Fujitsu MHV2100BH, and are SATA not IDE. I back up daily on DAT from my main workstation. I will opt for performance over redundancy in my case. The temporary cure is to disconnect D.C. to the other three drives, check all connects, reboot at which time the C:\ is found and Windows XP Pro. 64 bit OS loads without any errors like nothing was ever wrong. What am I doing wrong here? I have never knowingly loaded any SATA drivers, are these required without RAID configuration? I donâ??t have any errors showing in Device Manager.     - x64 Won't load sigmatel drivers Ever since beta two my sigmatel high definition x64 drivers won't load. In fact, when I check Control Panel, Add Hardware, no sigmatel is even listed. I am running RC2 on a Gateway GM5048 with 2gb memory.     - Drive lettering Vista rc1 stole my "C:" drive letter, moving all my partitions one letter up. I had left "I:" partition for it (the last one), but it took hold of "C:". I installed now rc2 from within rc1, chose a fresh install and it did install on the last partition. But it still shows Vista rc1 as "C:".     - VPC 2007 beta is out VPC 2007 beta is now available for download on Microsoft Connect. Look for it under Available Connections. I am running it on XP Pro x64 (and Vista 5744 x64) now and installing Vista RC2. Installation is now very straightforward. The default vhd size is now 64GB for Vista. The default memory for Vista is 512MB so change that to 1024MB if you have the ram. The VPC 2007 emulated cd/dvd drive now supports a full 4.2GB dvd image file so just drop the .iso on the drive icon and go.     - Dare I triple boot? Okay, I've installed RC2 on a machine at home and one at work. Old P4s with half a gig of memory. Just playing around. Now I'd like to dual boot with XP at home on my new X2 machine, but lingering fears of angry phone calls from the missus ("Hey, this stupid machine you built isn't working right...") makes me wary. I just got another 15K SCSI drive and thought it might be a chance to add it to my work rig, which is XP / XP 64 bit. Then I could put RC2 on that and triple boot and really test it out. Charlie posted a link to his dual boot guide, but I can't find it. How well does 5744 play in a triple boot situation?     - Dual boot rc1 & rc2 After unsuccessfully tried to upgrade Vista x64 5600 to 5728 and/or 5744 I wonder if I can leave rc1 as it is and install rc2 on a separate partition. Problem is that upgrade fails in the last part of the last stage, either installing from a DVD or HD (both 5728 and 5744).     - Install question Ok, I've downloaded the 64bit version twice now. The file name is vista_5600.16384.060829-2230_x64fre_client-lr1cxfre_en_dvd.iso, that is opened using WINRAR. When I open the file there is nothing in it. Just an empty folder and a read me note. What am I doing wrong? If I click on the properties for the winrar file it shows the correct file size of 3.59 Gig yet there is nothing in it when I extract it; just an empty folder. HELP! I have an nVidia Quadro FX3400 we\256mb Beta 2, RC 1, RC 1+, and now RC 2 x64 versions have all had some degree of video corruption. If I install the 32 bit version no corruption. Mostly the corruption takes places within IE, but I have experienced it also in WMP, Windows Mail, Explorer, and the desktop on rare occasions, but not to the extent of IE.     - DFS Replication I have two servers that i would like to replicate between one is a 32 bit 03 server the other is a 64 bit 03 server the 64 bis seems to be missing the dfs replication service. How do i configure the replication with this service missing, or install it Tag: i cant view any help content Tag: 39463

hi!
i dont know what went wrong. whenever i want to view the help file i get
this message:
" Internet explorer cannot download from site / ". try connecting to the web
etc...
This happens even if i press the help button from any window, including
start menu.

After pressing ok button, the help pane is blank with the cursor showing a
working in background icon.

i cannot connect to the net since i dont have a vista capable modem.

Are you referring to 'Help and Support' from the Start Menu or hhelp elsewhere?

Referring to help from any window / or ? icon - including help and support link
it only works with management console specific help right now- i dont know why

i could view help for 1st few days though without any hitch. problem started
after i installed an antivirus and it crashed my os. then i had to use
restore to get back to previous state. after that no help option comes.
