I'm trying to do my research before jumping into x64 and I'm a little
confused? Will a generic DVD/CD burner work in x64? I understand that x64
does not come with a burning utility like xp, but if I use Nero or something
like that, will I need a 64 bit driver from the manufacturer of the burner?

XP Professional x64 does include the CD-Burning Wizard, some DVD/CD-Writers
don't utilize it though. NERO works with Windows XP Professional x64, except
for the packet writing feature.

Yes, a generic DVD/CD works just fine. You can burn CDs with the included
software in the OS, but for DVDs you'll need Nero or Roxio. Nero 6 and later
works(but no packet writing), and Roxio 8 works.

Some DVD writers don't work with some mobo's. Specifically, Plextor has a
page on their site listing incompatibilities with certain drives, especially
SATA drives. I suggest you read the user reviews on vendor sites,
especially neweggs to get an idea if there are mobo problems. There are
links to the Plextor problem page from that site for the Plextor SATA drive.
