I'd like to purchase a new server OS today. We have the serve and it is
brand new - supports x64 or 32. It is going to be just file sharing and
AD - no print, no exchange, no sql. Any performance improvement by going
x64?

yes. AD and File are both definitely better under x64.

Check the MS site for several of the whitepapers I did around x64 Server.
The deployment one has some good general overall discussion around this...

And there's the Benefits one...
