Anyone had first hand experience with and can recommend a manufacturer who's
producing 64 bit software for anti virus please?

Thank you in advance.

eTrust AV 7.1 is a 64-bit app (appears in the Programs Files folder rather
than the Program Files (x86) folder) and works without problems. Several of
the free AV programs work, but are 32-bit apps.

Try searching the group with the keyword "antivirus". It will give you a
lot of posts with comments from other users.

Just a note. Many users have reported that their system hangs at shutdown
with this installed. Some have changed to another anti-virus and at least 1
just lives with a manual shutdown. If you have this problem after
installing Avast be aware that it is the cause. Many users, including
myself, have NO problems with it and it is free and seems to work fine.

I am among the users who *do* have a shutdown problem with Avast. I prefer
NOD32 2.5, even if it's no longer free, because it went final.

There are alot of freds that were posted on this topic.

But to be clear there are some antivirus products out there that work on
Windows XP X64.
These antiviruses though are 32bit only but with a 64bit driver.

The only 64bit antivirus so far is eTrust AV 7.1 as Colin Barnhorst said in
an earlier post.

You triggered something - I have never been able to search in this group. I
tried again with "antivirus" and no hits. I think that others have this
problem to as the are repeated posts on e.g. DirectX for 64, antivirus,
printer drivers, etc...

Besides I am using Avast with no problem. Had a shutdown problem but that
went away after BIOS update.

Jason, this one is easy :)

Or (if string is concatenated), go to google.com, and click on Groups, and
enter:

anti virus group:microsoft.public.windows.64bit.general

in the search field.

There are several, I belive ClamWin, Avast, Symantec and McAfee have all
released 64 bit versions along with some others. Computer Associates also
has a native x64 version of eTrust. There will be more along soon from
Company's such as Trend Micro and PC Cillin.

Here are some recommendations:
Symantec
http://enterprisesecurity.symantec.com/products/products.cfm?ProductID=155

Note: The x64 client that ships with AV Corp10 and it will not update it's
signatures from the parent server, it has to use Live Update which I won't
work through proxyservers.
Avast
http://www.avast.com/

The free one from Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Update: ESET the company made famous for it's multi-award winning Anti-Virus
software NOD32 has advised WinBeta.Org that the beta of it's 64Bit
Anti-Virus product is now available for download.

NOD32 has risen to prominence over the last 7 years given that according to
Virus Bulletin it has not missed a single in-the-wild virus since its
release.

Sorry to disagree with you but that's NOT what their website says, even if
it does install into the Program Files folder rather than the Program File
(x86) folder....
(not sure whether this will come out or not...)
Please see the chart below for which versions of EZ Antivirus, EZ Firewall

r6.1 r6.2 r6.3 r6.4 r7

Support for: 32 bit OS on AMD 64 CPU No No Yes Yes Yes
Support for: 64 bit OS on AMD 64 CPU No No No No No

i.e. it is STILL a 32bit program just like all the others...

But I am not talking about EZ Trust. I am talking about eTrust AV 7.1. EZ

You are referring to the wrong program. EZ eTrust is the Home program.
You want just eTrust version 7.1 which is listed under the business
solutions. The CD for eTrust version 7.1 has AMD64 and IA64 versions in
addition to the 32 bit versions.

I just wanted to add that Panda home versions DO NOT support x64, their tech
support indicates that the Corporate version does. I am getting the feeling
that I should toss the x64 bit disk and go back to 32bit XP Pro. My home
built PC has already gathered 10 months of dust waiting for software
developers to catch up! I would welcome any suggestions as to which way to
flop from a former MCP - NT4

I don't know why you have to use Panda. If you are waiting for specialized
apps to be x64 native or compatible, then I understand your plight. My
question is why you decided to use x64 in the first place? x64 is only an
alternative version of XP Pro for those using apps that need and can take
advantage of greater resources than x86 provides. Featurewise, it is
certainly not an upgrade to x86.

In response - I have used Panda for the last 5 years or so after having done
an un-official analysis of the CPU and Memory requirements of the then
current AV products. Panda at the time was about 1/3 in terms of resources
required, plus daily updates and free support if you have more than one
license.

Why 64bit - past experience has shown me to believe that when MS rolls out a
new OS (Vista) that the old ones start getting less support fairly quickly -
2 years. I received Tech News indicating that just this week. I enjoy
building my own PC's from components and getting it all to work. This is my
choice and $$ - my experience dates back to the TRS-80 days â?? I consider
myself a little better than a novice.

My comment and question was to ask would it be more prudent to backtrack and
use the x32 version of XP Pro vice the x64. I welcome any and all comments
and thank you for yours.

If Panda is not available for x64 then use Avast! or one of the other 64bit
compatible AV programs. I use CA's eTrust AV 7.x on x64. I suggest you go
back to x86 unless you have compelling reasons for using x64. It is not a
mainstream OS.

My experience goes back to teaching BASIC on mainframes in the 60's.
