several threads about adminpak I have read suggest that I can not yet install
the adminpak from Win2k3 server R2 on a vista 64 box. However, this KB
article suggests that I can
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/930056). I tried the resolution
in the KB article but I still can not run the adminpak tools, I still get the
'MMC could not create the snap-in' error and I am logged in as a member of
the domain admin's group.

So which is it, can I do this or not?

Those AdminPak tools were never designed to run on Vista, frankly. I've seen
enough threads to think that some people have managed to get them installed,
but also enough evidence that they're not all that well behaved even then.
This is, I'm afraid, a place for using Remote Desktop to the server.

Thanks Charlie. That was my suspicion as well. I wonder if the analagous
Longhorn administrator tools will be compatible with Vista? hmmm... I've been
meaning to load the recent beta of Longhorn anyway, maybe I'll give it a try.

Thanks

I just loaded Longhorn Beta 3 on a test box. I could not find any files with
by the name adminpak.* or wadminpak.*. I am guessing this is an indication
that these tools will only be available via remote desktop in the future.
BUMMER!

Hello David,
The Windows 2003 SP1 Admin pack should install on Windows VIsta and are
supported.
Following all the steps in the article should work, just being logged in as
a Domain Administrator is not enough.
This is not the place for Windows Server 2008 admin tools discussion yet.
Thanks,

Thanks for the response Darrell. As you can see from my previous post in this
thread I believe I followed the directions in the KB article but was still
unable to use the tools. You suggest that being logged on as a Domain Admin
is not enough. Could you be a little more specific as to what else do I need
to do.
Thanks again,
David

Re: adminpak 2003 on Vista 64 by DavidH

DavidH

that worked!

Another related question: I want to add AD computer and users to a custom
mmc along with DFS Namespace and several other tools I use. But when I choose
add/remove snap in's from the file pull down menu I do not see any of these
as a choice. How do add these to a custom .mmc?

Thanks,
David

Hello David,
Which platform of MMC.exe are you using?
There should be a 32-bit and 64-bit MMC.exe and depending on whether the
snap-in is 32-bit or 64-bit, will limit what is displayed
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

Hello Darrell,
First of all thanks so much for all your help with this.
hmm... well I guess I don't really know. I just punch in mmc from the start
box in Vista Ultimate 64. Which would that be? and how can I start one or the
other?
Thanks again,
David

Hello David,
It will default to 64-bit.
To run the 32-bit mmc, use %windir%\syswow64\mmc.exe to start it.
Thanks,

Hello Darrell,
I learn something everytime I work with you guys the community forums.
Thanks for the directions on how to start the 32bit MMC. I found it and ran
it but I am still not seeing AD users and computers and the other Adminpak
tools as available snap-ins. Do you know what I need to do make these
available?
Thanks again for all your help,
David H
