Dear All

Problem:-
New Acer Ferrari 4000 laptop hangs (stops responding altogether -
CTRL-ALT-DEL does nothing).

The O/S is Windows XP 64-bit. Processor AMD Turion 64-bit.

Crash normally happens when using Internet Explorer. Normally after using
for 15+ minutes. Rarely soon after booting.

There are no clues. Nothing logged in event logs. No blue screen.

Disabling startup programs through msconfig and disabling antivirus has no
effect. Practically no other software installed - the laptop is only a few
days old.

Drivers are all up-to-date:-

802.11b+g (Broadcom) 3.100.64.0

Realtek Audio Driver 5.10.0.5850

TI 4 in 1 Card Reader 1.0.3.6

Agere Modem Driver 2.1.53

Broadcom LAN Driver 8.27.1.0

Launch Manager v1.0.6.6a0e

Ambit Modem Driver 2.1.53.0

TouchPad Driver 8.0.10.0

ATI VGA Driver 6.14.10.6542

Please help. I am not really sure how to begin to diagnose the problem.

Thanks in advance.

Well, there are several of us here running on Ferrari's without problems, so
my suspicion is hardware. I would suggest using one of the third party
memory testing utilities as a good starting point. In an earlier thread
here, http://www.memtest86.com/ was suggested as a useful tool.

Does it crash on any particular websites? Are you using the 32 bit
version of IE? Did you add or change installed memory?

I've had my 4000 since the end of June and have had XP x64 on it since
the first week in July and have yet to crash anywhere. Any clues in
the Event Logs?

Thank you for your quick response.

I will try this utility soon.

Hi Barb

The 4000 is unmodified. It is the 64 bit version of IE.

There is nothing in the event logs. It is difficult that there are no error
messages anywhere.

I will try to work out which web sites the computer crashes on to rule that
out. And maybe monitor memory usage by applications.

Thank you for your input. It is valuable knowledge that your 4000 is so
reliable. there must be something to correct on mine.

Regards!

I would agree with Charlie on the possible Memory Problem.
Compaq/HP had a major recall on memory sticks..mostly with 256mb PC266 from
a year or so back.
It caused the exact problem after about 15-20 minutes it would just freeze
and the only way out was to reboot.
The unit I had the problem with was a Compaq EVO N100V and I tried several
brands of 256mb sticks with no improvement.
I then installed two 128's and the problem went away.
I got the laptop shortly after the recall ended and HP wouldn't even discuss
the matter.
There was a page on their site that mentions the problem but when you got to
the page for ordering the replacement memory, it just said that the program
had ended.
Because of this, I really didn't find out what the cause/repair was.

If this is a new machine, I would contact the Mfgr. and/or web sites for any
reported issues such as you are seeing and make them research the problem.

Good Luck,
Gary

try using the 32 bit version of IE for a day or so and see if you get
the same crashes.

On the Compaq that I had the problem with, it happened NO Matter what you
were doing.
Even with the machine idled it would just freeze up after 15-20 minutes...
If yours is doing it ONLY when using IE, the problem may lie elsewhere.

Let it sit idling for the same length of time and see if it happens..
