XP Pro X64 & Shuttle PN18G Wireless LAN Kit
Installed the PN18, and have been unable to get it to work on a
Shuttle ST20G5 XPC running XP x64sp2. I had pulled down 64 bit
drivers for this a few months back from the shuttle site, and
they installed without any problems. My router sees the PN18
MAC Addee, but the PN18 doesn't see the router. Router is less
than 4 feet away, so signal isn't an issue. Anyone else had
experience(s) with the PN18, would like to hear what you did to get it
to work.
Thanks,

Caution - Update drivers
Windows update offered new nVidia SATA controller drivers, which I

Moving from XP64 Pro Evaluation version to OEM version
All
I downloaded the 120 day evaluation version of XP-64 Professional onto my
workstation and have started using it for a while. In the mean time, after
evaluation, I ordered an OEM version of XP-64 SP2 and now have the CD with me.
What is the best way of moving from the evaluation version to the OEM
version that I have bought?
At the end of 120 day evaluation period, will the OS ask me to enter a new
product-key and validate the XP-64 OEM version?
Or do I have to do a new, clean install with the OEM version that I have
bought?
Thanks in advance. Tag: FS: Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Tag: 50143
Display problem
I'm running Vista Ultimate 64bit and my video card is a nVidia GeForce
6200 LE.
I installed Vista using the built in drivers but had continual problems
with the monitor going black and then coming back on with a message
that the display had stopped but recovered. It would do this, for
example if I changed volume during a playback on WMP. The playback
stopped, the screen went black and then came back on with the message,
a few seconds later playback resumed.
It got pretty annoying so I went to EVGA's site and downloaded the
latest and greatest, now the display flickers badly or goes black as
before but I don't get the message so the updated drivers helped but
didn't fix it.
Anyone have an idea? Any settings that might help?

oh.exe on 64bit
Hi -
First, if there is a better newsgroup for this question, please advise.
When I run oh.exe on our IA64 system I get the following:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Resource Kits\Tools>oh
//
// TIME: 2007-08-09 16:09
// MACHINE: P540
// BUILD: 3790
// OH version: built by: dnsrv_dev(v-smgum)
//
//
OH2: Unable to query system object information.
I have a feeling this is because the Windows Resource kit is not supported
on 64 bit platforms.
Are there any command line tools out there that can display handle
information similar to oh.exe, that will run on 64 bit systems (IA64 in
particular)?
I have already tried MS/SysInternals handle.exe, and that, while being
supported for x64 is not able to run on IA64.
Thanks!

"Windows Vista Capable"
PC buyers: 'Vista Capable' machines weren't Vista capable
Judge calls for trial - By Cade Metz in San Francisco
How misleading was Microsoft's "Windows Vista Capable" campaign?
Misleading enough for a judge to approve a federal trial.
On Tuesday, a federal judge ruled that two PC buyers, Dianne Kelley and
Kenneth Hansen, can proceed with a lawsuit that accuses Microsoft of
deliberately deceiving the public with the "Window Vista Capable"
stickers it slapped on Windows XP machines in the run-up to Vista's
January debut, InformationWeek reports. Microsoft had asked for a
dismissal, but US District Judge Marsha Pechman of Seattle is happy to
oversee an October trial.
With their class action suit, filed in March, Kelley and Hansen claim
that Microsoft used "bait and switch" tactics to move XP systems as the
world waited for the long-delayed Windows Vista. They argue that
Microsoft's stickers reassured buyers "that they were purchasing
Vista-capable machines when, in fact, they could obtain only a stripped
down operating system." Some "Vista Capable" machines, they say, were
only capable of running versions of the OS that lack things like
Microsoft's new Aero interface and a spruced-up Windows Media Center.
Indeed, Microsoft offers a neutered version of Vista, known as Home
Basic, that requires nothing more than an 800-MHz processor, 512MB of
memory, a 20GB hard drive, and support for Super VGA graphics. And
though the company recommends a 1GHz processor, 1GB of memory, a 40GB
hard drive, and DirectX 9 support for "premium" versions of the
operating system, these editions will still run on less powerful
machines - with certain OS features disabled.
Microsoft has argued that its "Vista Capable" marketing campaign also
included a "Vista Premium Ready" component that explained the
differences between various versions of the OS, but Judge Pechman
believes there's reason enough to let the suit go ahead.
Ray Persons, a partner with the international law firm King & Spalding
who specializes in class actions, is amazed that Pechman approved a
trial - let alone that she approved it so quickly. "It's awfully unusual
for a court to certify a class action where the allegation is a bait and
switch," he told The Reg. "In order to prove fraud, you've got to look
at whether the individual reasonably relied on the defendant's alleged
misrepresentations, and that kind of individual-by-individual
determination really defeats the efficiencies of a class action."
Of course, it isn't likely that the trial will actually happen. "In most
instances, civil cases - including class actions - get settled," Persons
said. "Seldom, if ever, is a class action tried."
PC buyers who believe they've been duped by Microsoft can expect
low-value coupons towards the purchase of machines that run premium
versions of Windows Vista. These might fetch a few dollars on eBay. ® Tag: FS: Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Tag: 50122
7E bluescreen when booting Vista x64 (with 4GB only)
Hi.
I have a Dell XPS 710 that ran WinXP (32bit) so far with 4GB installed with
no problems four 5 months. Have GForce 8, XFi SB, one SATA and one PATA
drive.
Got myself a second SATA hard disk drive to install Vista x64 that I want to
use via dual boot. When booting from DVD I immediately got a "STOP:
0x0000007E" (plus four parameters, no additional lines below) blue screen.
I removed 2GB and the install worked fine. Installed all Windows Updates
and latest 64bit drivers that I could find for my configuration. Rebooted
several times without any problems during that process. Then I placed the
other 2GB memory back into my machine and the same blue screen came back
when now booting my Vista 64 drive. The XP drive still works fine. Got
myself a whole new set of 4 1GB dimms: same blue screen; each and every time
I try to boot. When I remove 2GB it works fine. I also tested two 2GB in
the different dimm slots (i.e. 1 and 3 populated and 2 and 4 populated):
worked great. Just not with 4GB. Dell said they do not support Vista 64
(after being 3 x 90 min with them on the phone about this already :-).
Any help or hints on how to get Vista 64 to work with 4GB in my system would
be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Best regards,
Peter Haumer.

program files directories
I have Vista Business 64 bit.
I noticed that there's a program files and a program files x86 directories
on the hard disk. I have read that 64 bit software will be installed on the
program files and 32 bit software will be installed on program files x86.
My question is there really any difference except to group the 32 and 64 bit
software together? Can I install a 32 bit software on the program files
directory and vice versa? Will there be any probelms.

Program Update Problems
Hi. I've been successfully updating my x64 installation for over a year, but
now I have a problem. I'm pretty sure it started when I was running Visual
C# Express and clicked the Help|Updates menu. I got the "install activeX
question that pops up from time-to-time so I didn't think much about it and
proceeded.
Anyway, after I did the scan I got an error that the scan couldn't be
completed. That's when I noticed the 2004 copyright on the update program.
So, my question is how do I get the latest "updater"? I've been hesitating
doing a system restore since I've made some installs since (I didn't realize
the main windows update wasn't going to work -- I thought this only effected
the C# Express update.) Tag: FS: Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Tag: 50095

I Have Vista Home Premium 64bit
I Have Vista Home Premium 64bit installed with sky wireless broadband working
perfectly, if you have a 32 bit os system, and you have the maximum amount of
ram used up, youv'e effectively used up the full capacity that the operating
system can handle, if you want to put more than 4 MB of memory onto your
motherboard, on a 32 bit system, the operating system will NOT read >4MB ram.
You will have to (youv'e then got NO ALTERNATIVE) but to upgrade your
motherboard and oerating system to 64Bit compatability.
The Gigabyte M55plus-sg3 (rev: 2.1) motherboard will read up to 16MB DDR2
Ram Max, so this motherboard can support any operating system on the market.

Driver mismanaging system pte
Hello Everyone
Last night I installed X64 XP PRO service pack 2 after I rebooted
the machine I got the BSOD with the above warning and happened
again when it rebooted. The only thing I have changed is my video
card it was a ATI powercolor X1600Pro but now is a Gigabyte 8600GT
silent pipe (no fan) with the latest drivers from nvidia
I went into safe mode and deleted the drivers etc for the video card at
least it
did not crash I then installed a previous version of the drivers which is ok
but
what does the above error mean?
I searched microsofts knowledge base and got zip, did service pack 2 mess up
my video drivers? any ideas folks?????
BTW anyone know the normal operating temperatures of this card?
Under XP Pro 32bit it runs very hot when playing a game, you can hardly
touch it.

Cookies and IE Privacy Keeper?
I dual booted between XP and Vista Ultimate 64 for a very long time,
now moving hard drives around has caused me to do a fresh install of
Vista 64 on the new hard drive and I've got a weird problem....
My only version of Vista ran IE Privacy Keeper and it worked with no
problems, the new install of Vista does not.
I'm unable to use the "Keep Selected Cookies" feature because my old
Vista install kept Cookies in:
Users\(user name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Cookies
and the new install keeps Cookies in:
Users\(user name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Cookies\Low
Naturally, IE Privacy Keeper won't show cookies and changing the
Locations section in IE Privacy Keeper doesn't fix the problem, when I
click on the "View" link after the "Keep Selected Cookies" link (on the
IE tab) I still see the \Cookies folder rather than the \Cookies\Low
folder. Modifying the settings.iepk file doesn't seem to help either.
Anyone know what's going on? Why does one install of Vista keep
cookies in a different folder than a later install does? Tag: FS: Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Tag: 50031

Cost for WinXP 64 Pro
I D/L'd the evaluation version, burnt the CD, installed XP Pro 64 on a new
SATA HDD - found all the 64-bit drivers, did the SP2 and other updates from
Windows Update. Very few problems. (I can even see ALL 4 GB of my RAM
now!!!!) It's a pretty tight instalation at this point (no performance
issues; no yellow exclamation points in Device Manager, etc.).
I am not a business, corporate, education or government user - I am one of
those "enthusiasts" who likes to futz with software and hardware.
My question is: what happens after the 120-day evaluation period? The
Microsoft web site doesn't make that clear. If I'll be offered the
opportunity to buy a license at that time, then a) how much will it be; and
b) how will this opportunity manifest itself? Will my computer just begin to
smoke on the 121st day? Will I be given a message upon boot-up on day 121 to
buy or delete?
The real question is: how much does a single license cost for the
non-institutional, "enthusiast" user? I can't find this info anywhere on the
MS web site, and I'd like to know in advance of the 120-dat witching hour.

Conexant Audio and Modem driver(Vista x64) for Gateway Laptop 7510gx is finally found!

found it on HP website for one of their laptop and it works with this
gateway laptop, but need manual installation and here's how:
1. Download and unzip this file

drivers folders
2. In the Device manager, right click the device to install and choose
pick device driver from the list, scroll through the lists and choose
Multimedia audio device and click on "have disk", then direct it to the
extract folder. It will give you the warning about compatible issue but just
click OK and will install fine, then reboot the system. Do the same thing
for Modem.

and then causes pages to hang and the browser will not close - until I kill
the process....which is always a child of I.E.7.

32-bit version of IE 6.0
Does anyone know how I can get the 32-bit version of IE to run with the 64
bit. I have a huge problem with Adobe Acrobat running a 32-bit activeX on

-- Cannot open PDF within Internet Explorer 64-bit version
Internet Explorer 64-bit and 32-bit versions are both bundled with Windows
XP 64-bit and Windows Server 2003 x64 systems. Adobe Acrobat 7.0 and Acrobat
3D can open PDF files inside the browser window only if you use the 32-bit
version of Internet Explorer. Acrobat installs a 32-bit ActiveX control
(pdf.ocx) that enables Acrobat to open PDF files within Internet Explorer;
the 64-bit version of Internet Explorer 6 does not support 32-bit ActiveX
controls.
If the browser is Internet Explorer 64-bit, then PDF files open in the
stand-alone Acrobat application, not inside the browser window.

Slow copying of files
We have a problem copying files from Windows Server 2003 64-bit to our local
desktops running Windows XP. For a large number of the desktops, a file copy
of 60 Mb from the server to the local drive can take about 30 minutes to
complete. For other desktops of the same OS, the same file can be copied in
about 5 seconds. For the ones the copy slowly, they can copy that same file
from a Windows 2003 32-bit server or another desktop in 5 seconds. We have
even moved PCs around to swap the network ports used and the problem follows
the PC. We have standardized our desktop and server hardware so the problem
should point to something in the software. There is something fouling up the
communications between some of our Windows XPs and Windows 2003 64-bit and we
are running out of ideas as to what to check. Any tips on what to look at? Tag: FS: Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Tag: 49962

IE 32 bit error running vista ultimate 64
Running 64 bit version of Vista Ultimate. The 64 bit browser works fine,
but whenever I use the 32 bit browser (necessary to view some sites) all of
a sudden I started getting the following message:
ieuser.exe - bad image
c:\\windows\syswow64\msfeeds.dll is either not designed to run on windows or
it contains an error
If I say ok to the error message the page continues to load and then the
message reappears, etc. etc.
Has anyone encountered and fixed this error. Tag: FS: Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Tag: 49950
Vista Drivers for Logitec QuickCam Ultra Vision SE fail
Vista Drivers for Logitec QuickCam Ultra Vision SE fail from Logitec website
or from Microsoft Windows Update.
Same with Plantronics DSP 500, same with a few other things...
The machine is a ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe, AMD FX-60, 4GB dual channel memory,
1TB of disk.
I went to the Logitec WebCam as it is supposed to be Vista Cerified...

problems with 'manage your server'
Hi everyone,
I have a windows 2003 server sp2, everything was working fine, and then,
right on the middle of opening my regedit32, we had a power failure. the
server was shuttingdown and restarting continuously, finally i could get to
the last good known configuration and could access my server.
I've been checking settings and testing it and found out these issues
1.- when i open the 'manage your server' screen, and i select 'add/remove a
role' i got this mesage:
"Windows cannot find the file or page you requested
(%WinDir%\system32\cys.exe /skipwelcome) Press F5 to refresh the manage your
server page and then lick the link again"
I can manually go to \windows\system32\ and run cys.exe and i get to the
server wizard without any problem.
2.- If i select the 'manager your file server"' i got the same error just
with different filename, " FS.msc"
in this case, if i go to \windows\system32 and run FS.msc, first i got a
screen saying 'cannot find resource file', I click on the OK button and then
another screen shows up saying 'MMC has detected an error in a snap-in and
will unload it' and gives me 2 options, report this error to microsoft and
thenn shut down MMC and the second one, unload the snap-in and continue
running. I click the second option and get another screen 'unhandled
exception in managed code snap-in', FX:{f7da6f14-f244-401a-9259-f015a82057d3}

4GB in WOW
Dear All,
My question is, can I allocate 4GB of physical memory when I run my
32bit application in Windows 64bit edition in a machine that has 16GB
memory. I already tried allocating of 3GB by configuring 32bit windows
but I need more. I think it may be possible because in 64bit I don't
have 1GB OS preallocated and WIN64 is running from somewhere else.
My program is a in memory database and need not to use virtual memory
and all its data should be in physical RAM.
Thanks for any reply,
John Tag: FS: Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Tag: 49935
