Blue screen's on start up
Hi, I have just got my pc back from the shop after a week and I am still
having the same problem I sent it in with.
About every second or so start up I recive a blue screen, windows then
reboots, I select start windows normally and it normally continues to load
properly (sometimes I have to select start from last knowen good config).
The blue screen message I am getting is \systemroot\system32\config\security
or its log or atternate is corrupt, absent or not writable.
I have been having this problem since day one when I brought the computer
but I have been busy with assesments and have a lot coming up soon so I can't
afford to send it back to the shop for them to look at it again and not have
the problem appear for them again.
My system details are
Windows Vista 64 ultimate SP1
2x2GB ram
Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3
2x500GB segate HDD in raid 1
Intel 8400 duel core cpu
MSI 8800GT GFX card
Please can someone help me, if I can't get this problem fixed I am going to
have to return vista and get XP as one of the guys at the computer shop said
to just blame vista for this problem. Tag: Windows Installer 4.5 released Tag: 59710
Using printmig.exe to migrate printers from 32bit to 64bit W2K3
Hello,
I'm trying to migrate 500 printers from a W2K 32bit standalone server to a
W2K3 64bit cluster and have a few questions left unanswered...I have a
standalone 64bit test server and till now I didn't get the printers to work
nor to be displayed in the printers & faxes window. Though I can see the
printer entries under HKLM/system/currentcontrolset/print/printers !? The
printmig tool doesn't give any error during backup/restore. No errors in
pm.log either... Restoring to a 32bit W2k3 system worked like a charm.
All of the printers are HP and are covered by the 64bit Universal Print
Driver. and the printmig that was created on the 32bit W2K server contains
all 32bit drivers for the printers.
So,
1. Do I have to install the 64bit UPD prior to the printmig restore?
2. Can I use printmig for 32bit to 64bit printer migration?
3. Scripted migration?
4. Anything else i forgot...?
Any help is welcome.

Random reboots while trying to install xp64
I'm wondering if anyone can help me figure out why my newly built computer
randomly reboots during the Windows XP 64bit installation. The furthest I've
ever gotten was to select my time-zone. Some times it even reboots during the
initial loading of system files (right after loading F6 SATARAID drivers).
I've pulled out all RAM except one stick in DIMM 1. I've disconnected my
other 3 SATA HDD's including the 2 in RAID 0. All that's currently left on
the mobo is my SATA Raptor, SATA burner, and my 8800GT video card. Even when
I pulled out all of my SATA devices and used an IDE burner and an IDE HDD,
the system would still randomly reboot. I've flashed the BIOS to Rev 1.1
which is the only option MSI offers for the mobo after Rev1.0. My BIOS
recognizes all of my drives, and all 8GB of my RAM (although not running at
the 1066 speed). The drive boot order is set up for Floppy, Burner, and then
formatted HDD. I've reseated every single connection in my system except for
the CPU, and unfortunately I don't have another PSU to try out.
Also, which F6 drivers am I supposed to use? nVidia has SATARAID drivers for
WinXP64 for both my 780I-SLI Northbridge, and for my 570I-SLI Southbridge
(and I know what my SB is used for). I've even tried using all 4 drivers for
F6.
So to sum it up... no matter if I'm using SATA drives or IDE drives, my
system randomly reboots during Win XP64 installation. Any thoughts?

Screen resolution for Win64
Hi group,
As Win64 has a better memory management, I suppose that
windows screen options are enhanced also, isnt it?
For example, normally in Win32 u have
Colors 256 colors, 16bits, 32 bits
1024x768 pixels or 1280 x 800 pixels
so, the next for Win64 would be
Colors 64 bits and something like to say,
2000x1000 pixels

O.T. - troubleshooting the 64bit machine. . .(update)
Hello,
this certainly is taking time but it keeps being interesting. The machine
came back with a new motherboard and CPU cooler and fans - and it still
powered down just as before. I phoned back and managed to catch them with
their pants down (so to speak), and made them borrow me a graphics card
instead of shipping the thing back and forth indefinitely. A 7650 GT X2
(dual GPU!) was delivered and the machine ran for more than two hours, which
is twice the time it managed earlier, so I really thought I'd found the
culprit.
But then it shut down again, of course. So, this leaves the Seasonic PSU or
the CPU itself (Athlon FX62)?
So, far it has cost me nothing, except the trouble and the troubleshooting
and the transport. The Seasonic has extended warranty but I am not sure
about the CPU, it is 18 months old and I may have some 'Good-Will' to draw
on yet but that was an expensive SOB.
Allright - I've gotten my 30" display, which is wonderful, of course,
thankfully, it runs fine on my Win2K reserve, and I've made a few
observations that I wonder if anyone else can verify. I wouldn't wonder if
the 'Thin-Film-Transistor' was a lot faster than the 'Phosphors', but I had
not expected the effect to be visible to the naked eye, in terms of 'fluent
motion'. The Colin Mc Rae simulator is almost completely transformed, and
displays a video quality that is totally amazing, I just can't seem to be
able to pick up my jaw. If this is 'standard' behavior, then I will beg you
all to get one for yourself. And right now - don't mess about with any of
those 24 inch's!!!

server generates Delayed Write errors copying Very large Files
Apologies as this turned out to be rather lengthy....
I run a development engineering lab for a financial services company and we
are running into a rather peculiar but very troubling problem on some of our
performance servers when copying, moving or backing up very large files,
i.e. files greater than about 52 Gigabytes in size (yes GB not MB).
Primarily these are SQL Server database files but we also see the same
problems copying or relocating large Virtual Server Hard Drive files of that
size or larger.
The problem is actually an old one that I think has not been dealt with, the
end result for us on Windows Server 2000 and Windows Server 2003 R2 is that
after copying about 52 Gbytes of the file, Windows starts reporting "Windows
delayed write" errors and at that point the file copy collapses and stops.
Although the system reports the copy is still running, no further data is
being successfully copied. All the file IO and other windows processes
slowdown considerably (more on this in a little bit). In each case where a
delayed write error is generated, Event Viewer shows the first error as
being event ID 50 and or Event 26. The problem is seen when using Drive
letters and UNC paths and we asked about hotfixes for Server 2003 SP2 but
were told by support there were none as the fix described in KB Article
890352 [ http://support.microsoft.com/kb/890352/ ] was rolled into SP2 and
did not apply to our issue.
We have only recently begun to see these problems because until recently
most of our performance testing model used fairly small working sets for
data (typically under 100GB total) and thus each file-group in our databases
was less than 40GB so we never really saw a problem. I've seen this problem
on ALL versions of Windows including Server 2008. In the server 2008 case,
the O/S collapses completely and cannot be shutdown. In most cases we have to
power-off the server to get the problem system to recover, no delayed write
error is reported on server 2008.
I've tested this on a variety of servers (listed next) and in as many cases
as possible I tested on multiple servers with the same config and with
different O/S editions. I also tested one of the servers that was
experiencing the problems first, using small files (files from 1byte up to
40 GigaBytes in size). The test set I use is approx 870GB in total size and
has been continuously copying for about 40 days now continuously on this
server, I think at last check it had copied around 2,973 Terabytes of data
on this server, all without error.

storage (SATA) 3.4 TB SAN Storage on a Nexsan Sataboy Box via iSCSI WinSvr
2003R2 SP2 x64
With the exception of the ML570 I've tested on multiple servers of the same
type. All servers have succeeded in copying large volumes of files 40Gb and
smaller.
On our HPs all drives are SCSI hot swappable. Either 10 or 15K. We don't mix
spindle speeds in raid groups. On our Dells, all local drives are SAS, on
the EMC AX150 all drives are are SATA and on the SATABoy all drives are
SATA. On all systems file copies using small files up to 0 - 40GB are all
successful.
All systems are running the latest BIOS and we have seen the same behavior
on prior BIOS versions. All disk controller firware is updated to the latest
version and like the BIOSes the same behavior existed on earlier versions.
We have checked and updated hard disk firmware, where new versions are
available. Same issues as for controller firmware. On local Hard drives we
run Raid 1 or Raid 5 to get best performance or max capacity. Both Raid
modes exhibit the same behavior. I have tested on the HP's with no Raid at
all and the same results occurred.
I try not to do specialty O/S builds for our lab environment. I build a
straight default Windows O/S configurations, fully patch it with microsoft
Patches and burn in test the system, then go test for this problem. I do not
tweak system settings or apply registry hacks until I get baseline test
data. In all cases here for the file copy tests I have not tweaked the
system settings or registry at all. Our servers are set for background
performance for the system cache, although we tested with 'foreground' set
without success too. We've tried large and small pagefiles and have moved
pagefiles to seperate disk spindles to see if it made a difference.
I've tried all manner of file copy and file sync tools, but what it comes
down to that if the file being copied is written on the systems' storage
system (local or SAN), the system will collapse and file copying will fail
somewhere around 52 - 58GB being copied. Windows Server 2008 has given me my
best look into the problem and what appears to be happening is that the
system cache keeps expanding until all physical memory is used and the paged
pool keeps growing until it hits around 380MB and non paged hits about 82MB
(I think the latter is right). What I then see is the CPU goes flat line as
does the Total Disk byes written in Perfmon but the Physical memory usage
history in task manager suddenly starts ramping until it gets out around
70GB and then everything is done and either the system hangs (server2008) or
delayed write errors occur.
One place where I do not seem to see the problem is SAN Drive to SAN Drive
Copies on the EMC SAN. I always see this problem on the SATABOY SAN with
large files when copying large files to the SAN volumes regardless of Cache
Settings. I can backup the files to tape but due to their size its an
expensive option both in media cost and time to backup and restore the data,
my preferred option is to backup to removeable Hard Disk (External USB -
SATA), sure its slower but it offers operating efficiencies right now I
cannot get with Tape (if it worked). Some testing has centered on using
external drives, but most of the testing on my systems has been to copy or
move the files from one volume to another on the server. It doesn't matter
whether I turn caching off or on for external USB drives or local drives. I
have had very occasional success on the EMC SAN ensuring that windows O/S
disk caching is off. Success using this method has been spotty and limited
to servers with 32GB or more of RAM. One very telling test setup was to
populate the Server with 128GB RAM and run windows Server 2008 x64. In that
case almost all file copies were successful, although they became painfully
slow after about 60GB was copied and it took over 5 hours to copy the last
~35GB of a 95.8 GB file.
I tried using Backup Exec and MsBackup to backup the files to a hard disk
but it failed everytime, when I run the same backup to tape it is
successful.
This is leading me to think the problem is generated in the lower level file
system filter drivers. I've tested with and without AntiVirus software in
the mix and have likewise tested systems that are built raw with no patches
at all and see the same problems. I also tried splitting the file into
chunks and copying the pieces and while I can split the file, I cannot join
it again as the processes all seem to rely on creating a temp file and the
process of copying the large temp file always results in the delayed write
errors being generated. I've also tried zipping up the file to reduce its
size (database files compress really well) but that process likewise
requires a file copy of a large file, and at some point that fails. It
should go without saying I've tried using SQL Db Backup writing to disk
storage and it fails everytime, tape is successful. In fact it was this very
act that caused me to begin investigating the problem in the first place.
In days gone by there were loads of users seeing this problem on Win XP
copying much smaller files and there are some other people seeing this
problem today on Windows Server, Microsoft are very quiet on the subject for
windows server, I think in no small part because very few people are seeing
the problem and there is no demand to identify the problem or to fix it. I
cannot believe though I'm one of the first people to see the problem.
I'll quite happily accept its a configuration issue if someone can tell me
how to fix the problem! All attempt to tweak a system has not yielded any
success. What also sucks is that you typically have to wait ~30 mins to find
out that the problem will manifest.
I'm about ready to escalate this issue to Microsoft, I think I now have
enough test data to do so, but thought I would bounce this off others to see
if anyone else has a solution or guidance first.

I had before. (I'd like to use all of the 4 GB I have installed now). So I
suppose my question is three part. Is my Processor capable of running a 64

hello everyone
i am one of the stupid people that has windows xp x64 pro
there is this one online flash game i play
age of war by maxgames.com
its really a stupid game whatever this isn't about that
when i get into the game my system speaker starts going off
one time i tried to just ignore it and well after like 20 minutes of
beeping it had a thermals shutdown.
now i will i could say this is just for from this game but it isn't.
when i watch certain youtube videos the beeping starts again.
apparently the videos aren't long enough to cause a thermal shutdown
now i have a
500w power supply
intell E6600 processor on a ECS P4M900T-M motherboard
2gb ram ddr2 (2x1gb)
no cd-rom drives
4 hard drives
everything else in integrated onto the motherboard
6 system fans
120mm cpu fan with 3 speed and heat sensor
120mm power supply fan with 3 speed and heat sensor
2 80mm rear case fans for air intake
1 80mm side fan for air exoust
1 80mm front fan for exoust removes heat from 4 hard drives.
i have never had a system over heat before this
i have checked all the fans for performance and wires are not in the
way
my theory is my processor is trying to split the flash game into 2
processors and its failing
the lag causes the system to be redundant and heat up for no reason
thus the system beep at every processor failure
misc.
i have adobe master collection installed CS3 it came with a unique
flash player for testing .swf files.
but i use the flash player to play other games i have and i have no
problem.
what can i do to prevent another thermal shutdown?
no, not playing the game and not going to youtube in not an option.
last note
i have virtual pc 2007 i have windows installed on that as well
mainly to test web pages with different resolutions and different

Upgrading from home basic 64 bit
I ordered the home premium upgrade, however I was sent the 32 bit and I
currently have the 64 bit home basic. I was told I would have to order the
64 bit from Microsoft. I received that disk today. How do I go about
installing them? which one do I install first? My Pc has been restored to
factory settings. Tag: Windows Installer 4.5 released Tag: 59478

Userenv Error
I have a Windows 2003 server Single domain network. All computers are Windows
XP Pro 32 bit. We just purchase a computer DELL T3400 with 64 bit and XP x64
bit.
I Joined the cmputer with Domain and rebboted.
I have several errors in my Event Log.
Application Error: Userenv EventID:1053
Windows cannot determine the user or computer name. (The specified domain
either does not exist or could not be contacted. ). Group Policy processing
aborted.
Soultion 1:
-------------
In Event Viewer, click System, and check for any networking-related
messages, such as Netlogon messages, that indicate a network connectivity
issue
I found a Netlogn Error in System Events:
-----------------------------------------------
This computer was not able to set up a secure session with a domain
controller in domain "COMPANYNAME" due to the following:
There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request.
This may lead to authentication problems. Make sure that this computer is
connected to the network. If the problem persists, please contact your domain
administrator.
ADDITIONAL INFO
If this computer is a domain controller for the specified domain, it sets up
the secure session to the primary domain controller emulator in the specified
domain. Otherwise, this computer sets up the secure session to any domain
controller in the specified domain.
This solution wasn't very helpful because I did have logon server available
and working fine and processing all the log-on requests.
Solution 2:
------------
At the command prompt, type netdiag, and note any errors. Those errors
usually have to be resolved before Group Policy processing can continue
Not Applicable because this command is not available on Windows XP x64.
Soultion 3:
-------------
At the command prompt, type gpupdate, and then check Event Viewer to see if
the Userenv 1053 event is logged again.
It didn't created/write 1053 event (Refereshing Policy didn't generate any
errors)
Solution 4:
-----------
To verify that the domain controller can be contacted through Domain Name
System (DNS), try to access \\mydomain.com\sysvol\mydomain.com, where
mydomain.com is the fully qualified DNS name of your domain
I was able to access the share \\mydomain.com\sysvol\mydomain.com and found
2 folders "Policies" and "scripts"
Solution 5:
------------
Verify that you can access the domain controller by using tools such as the
Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in
Solution 5 is not possible with Windows XP PRO 64 bit but I was able to
access Active Dir Users and Computers from Windows XP Pro 32.
Windows XP Professional build 2600 with QFE Q329357
Solution 6:
------------
Check to see whether other computers on your network are having the same
problem.
No computer have problem on the network
Solution 7:
-----------
If this computer is a part of a cross-forest domain, verify that the forest
for the user account is currently available and can be contacted by the
computer on which the Group Policy processing failed
Doesn't apply

Blank screen half the time after windows vista x64 loading bars
Half of the times I boot vista 64 bit up it is absolutley fine. The other
half is something which has very much plagued me for the last week and
beginning to stress me out a bit.
When it goes wrong:
All goes well and the vista login bars go by and then suddenly I get a black
screen then my monitor tells me it isn't connected to the PC. I'm running a
Palit 8800GT. I updated the drivers to old and new and still had this issue.
After about 10 seconds of this no connection the PC reboots and normally
this time it will load into vista just fine and tell me that it has had a
'bluescreen' problem with the following information:
BCCode: d1
BCP1: FFFFF9804C21C00C
BCP2: 0000000000000002
BCP3: 0000000000000000
BCP4: FFFFF98003D4B43E
I have tried reformating and reinstalling everything and still have the
issue. Does anyone know what it could be?

Vista 64-bit Compatibility
I'm in the market for a new computer and was wondering about Vista 64-bit's
compatibility with programs, hardware, etc.
I'm an architecture student running AutoCAD, Rhino, Maya, Adobe CS3. Are
these compatible with Vista 64-bit?
I've heard that Vista 64-bit is a faster, more powerful OS than what I've
been using (XP Pro) but I don't want to switch if 64-bit compatibility is
still in its infancy (at least for the applications I'm using).
I've read many threads on this subject, but am apologetically still unsure
(it's a lot of money for a grad student to invest in, and many discussions on
this subject are relatively old).
Thank you for any answers/suggestions/advice. I appreciate everyone's help. Tag: Windows Installer 4.5 released Tag: 59448

Upgrade from 64bit Vista Home Premium to Ultimate
Is the upgrade to Ultimate from Home Premium specific to 64 bit or 32 bit? I
have 64 bit Home Premium and I need to go to ultimate. Do I need to be
careful which upgrade I pick, or is there just one upgrade on the market that
includes both versions? Does anybody know? I'd appreciate any advice...thanks! Tag: Windows Installer 4.5 released Tag: 59444

And technically on topic, since it's only available on x64 systems, of
course. ;)
Seriously, I've been running Hyper-V for a while now, and with this RC1
release, I've moved all my production virtualization to Hyper-V.

Is Vista x64 supported as a hyper-v guest yet?
Thought I saw some new software drops the past week; perhaps it was only for
allowing Vista X64 to manage Hyper-V.
Anyone?

Installing IDE Hard Drives Using XP PRO x64
This is my first install with a few problems to iron out. All of my SATA
drives installed just fine, no matter what I do with the IDE drives the
hardware profile will show the Seagate and of course it comes up
installing new hardware, but here's the kicker? My Computer icon only
shows the SATA hard drive & SATA DVD's? What happened to my Seagate?
I have 2 of them and tried them both, they are small drives one
is 10.2 and the other one is 12.6? I forgot my motherboard
when I filled out my profile it's an ASUS M3A32-MVP Deluxe.
I have all the updates installed including service pack 2, any ideas here?
Thanks!

Run Adobe Premiere Elements on Vista 64 bit system
I'm trying to run Adobe Premiere Elements on my new 64 bit laptop but am
having nothing but problems. Adobe can't seem to help me, I talk to one
person and get told that it will run in 32 bit compatibility mode and I talk
to another guy and he tells me that it won't run at all. When the program
runs it keeps freezing, sometimes it trys to load but then stops. Any ideas
out there? Anybody else using this program successfully? Tag: Windows Installer 4.5 released Tag: 59417
Vista 64 bit
I am currently running Win XP Pro (32 bit). I am intending to upgrade to Win
Vista Home Premium and purchased the upgrade in 32 bit but have ordered the
64 bit DVD from MS. Here's the question: Can I go ahead and upgrade using
the 32 bit version I have and then upgrade that to the 64 bit version when it
arrives?
My system is a new build; Core 2 Duo E8400, Asus P5K Deluxe MB, 8 Gb OCZ
Platinum, nVidia 9600 GT (512) Direct X 10 and 2 x 320Gb Seagate SATA drives.
All of my equipment supports 64 bit.
